Chapter 524 The Creepy Cries
```
At around six in the morning, the villagers of Linhu Village gradually awoke from their slumbers, beginning a new day’s activities.
Old Liu had already been up for a while!
In his own yard, he chopped some firewood, added it to the stove, and hummed along to the classic old songs on the radio.
Planning to eat something soon, he intended to head out to work in the fields.
Suddenly, through the glass window, he caught a glimpse of the cows in the backyard running off into the distance.
He immediately became alert, "What’s going on? Why are the cows running? Could someone be stealing them?"
He stopped what he was doing and thought for a moment, opting not to go outside directly but to first head to the nearby utility room to check out the backyard through the window.
Cautiously peering out for a few seconds, he saw no sign of thieves or anyone lurking suspiciously.
Relief washed over him, and he leaned on the table to catch his breath.
If there really were a thief, his old bones surely wouldn’t be able to fight back!
And really, it made sense — who would bother coming to such a remote place as Linhu Village, much less to steal a cow?
Just then, suddenly, a large face appeared at the window!
Upon the yellow fur, black stripes ran, and a pair of bright eyes stared back.
Old Liu’s mind went blank!
He rubbed his eyes and opened his mouth wide, his expression one of disbelief.
"What on earth is that, a cat? Why is its face so big?"
A notion whispered weakly in his subconscious: Could it be a tiger?
No, no, no, how could a tiger possibly make its way into his yard? That was just preposterous!
The tiger’s copper eyes fixed on Old Liu, its maw opened wide to reveal white vapors and sharp canines that seemed to bode ill.
Raising a paw, it "smack" shattered the glass window with a swipe.
Grrrr~~~
A deep growl emanated!
The sound, akin to an engine, came wave after wave, inspiring an unending sense of dread within.
This was no cat; it was unmistakably an Amur tiger!
Old Liu watched as the tiger clawed at the shards of glass on the window, seemingly intent on breaking in; his already muddled brain went completely blank, his body rigid, not daring to move an inch, even his breathing slowed considerably.
Time seemed to crawl in this instant, each second stretching on interminably! Experience more content on NovelBin.Côm
It felt as though centuries had passed before the tiger’s great face disappeared from the window, and it ran off into the distance.
Gradually, Old Liu came back to his senses, his back drenched in cold sweat, and when he tried to walk, he found himself completely immobile!
Though he hadn’t done much, all his strength was sapped away, his legs as limp as noodles; he gradually collapsed to the floor.
"Huff...huff..."
Gasping like a fish out of water, he felt an oppressive tightness in his chest, his eyes wide open as he tried to breathe deeply.
The echo of the tiger striking the window continued to haunt him, a harrowing experience!
He nearly thought he would end up in the tiger’s jaws.
At that thought, a fuzzy idea formed: with an Amur tiger in the village, he had to warn the villagers, or what if someone else got bitten to death!
Having narrowly escaped disaster, his mind was now a blurry mess, dizzy and functioning on mere instinct.
Old Liu, his hands supporting him against the floor, shook as he struggled to rise.
He managed to steady himself on the table and slowly stood up!
Leaning against the wall, he barely dragged himself to the door.
Clinging tightly to the door, he cracked it open just a bit, whispering, "There’s a tiger, there’s a tiger!"
The voice that emerged was faint, like the buzzing of a mosquito.
"Huff...huff..." Taking two deep breaths, Old Liu mustered the last ounce of strength in his body and shouted, "There’s a tiger!"
The world before him spun wildly as he collapsed to the ground, oblivious to everything else.
As consciousness faded, he wondered, Could the villagers hear his warning?
...
As Old Liu encountered the Amur tiger, Zhang Shouxin was also busy in his own garden, loosening the soil around the vegetables.
```
Grrr~~~ Grrr~~~
"Hmm?"
Zhang Shouxin lifted his head, his gaze filled with confusion. What on Earth was that? Why did it sound so spine-chilling?
In all his years, he had never heard such a strange noise.
He put down what he was working on and ran out from the back of the courtyard, determined to check out the direction from which the sound came.
He wasn’t the only one; the other villagers nearby were also curious about the noise.
Some came out and greeted their fellow villagers, asking, "Did you hear that noise?"
"I’m baffled too, what could it be?"
"No idea."
The vicinity gradually became lively!
The Amur tiger emerged from Old Liu’s courtyard, looking around and sniffing the air.
With its ears pricked up, it looked around warily and glanced over its shoulder before running forward.
It wound its way through the paths between the brick houses, struggling to find an exit and confronted by a wire mesh fence ahead.
The tiger tried to cross it, but after a brief attempt, it realized the wire mesh wasn’t easy to get past!
As the noise from behind grew louder, the tiger surveyed its surroundings and ran into the bushes between the brick houses to crouch down and hide quietly.
Zhang Shouxin spotted a yellow figure dart past!
He followed, peering in that direction, and then his eyes widened in shock.
Oh my, isn’t that a tiger!
He realized immediately, and his heart began to pound with nervousness as he turned and ran back.
Back at home, he breathed a sigh of relief and excitedly told his family, "Oh my god, do you know what I just saw? A live tiger, bigger than a calf!"
He spread his arms wide to gesture the size of the tiger.
His family members all burst into laughter, clearly disbelieving.
His wife said, "Stop spewing nonsense."
His father added, "Tigers, what tigers? There are no tigers here."
Zhang Shouxin insisted, "There really is a tiger, right outside!"
Seeing Zhang Shouxin describe it so earnestly and persistently, the family started to half-believe him!
It was key that Zhang Shouxin wouldn’t joke with them about such a far-fetched idea. Could there really be a tiger?
With a slap on his thigh, his father said eagerly, "Let’s go check it out!"
His wife commented, "If there’s really a tiger, shouldn’t we call the police?"
Zhang Shouxin was just about to take them to see when he heard this and thought it made sense.
So he said, "It’s just behind Old Liu’s house! You guys go check out the tiger first, I’ll call the police."
His father fired up the tractor, with his mother and his wife on board, and headed towards that direction with a "keng keng keng" noise.
Meanwhile, Zhang Shouxin made the call: "Hello?"
"May I ask..."
"Ah, I just saw a tiger here!"
"A tiger?" The voice on the other end sounded confused. "Where are you exactly?"
"I’m at Linhu Village, Group 10! I just spotted a tiger, it was lying next to a house, making the most eerie sounds."
After reporting the sighting, Zhang Shouxin described the situation!
Without much delay, he then went to find his family.
His father was peeking out from inside the tractor, scanning around: "Don’t see it, do you?"
Zhang Shouxin also hopped onto the vehicle: "It should be right here!"
The tractor rumbled loudly as they began searching the vicinity.
Suddenly, they spotted a tiger lying under a transformer, its head facing them.
He exclaimed excitedly, "There, there, do you see it, do you see it!"
The tiger suddenly sprang out and ran forward!
What do you think?
