Chapter 914: Chapter 550: Successful Experiment_1
Seven days later, Glen’s personal information system sent him a message.
The electronic voice delivered the news in an indifferent tone.
“Senior Mechanical Excavation Specialist Bonnie Westford has ended her own life. Considering your close relationship with her, Glen, you are being notified. Do not inform anyone else. Do you wish to attend Bonnie Westford’s farewell ceremony together with Jammie Baker Westford? Due to special circumstances, only Jammie and Bonnie’s supervisor, Leonard Lee, are currently informed and authorized to attend.”
After reading the message, a dialogue box popped up in Glen’s retinal projection.
His first instinct was to click “no.”
However, the latter part of the assistant’s message kept echoing in his heart, unable to be dismissed.
...
He clicked “yes.”
Bonnie was ambitious and eager to advance in her career while she was alive.
She would probably be heartbroken if she knew her funeral was attended by only two people.
One more person could make it a bit more lively; something was better than nothing.
At least there were three individuals in the universe who would commemorate her at her funeral.
Strangely, the news of Bonnie’s death stirred something different in Glen’s heart.
It created a small crack in his indifferent demeanor.
On the aft deck to the Heart Fire, Glen, Jammie, and Leonard Lee stood side by side under the simulated starry sky.
The stars above were bright and dazzling.
A gray isolation shield trapped the air within.
Bonnie, who had aged slightly due to the passing of time, lay quietly in a transparent coffin. Her eyes were closed, her expression peaceful, a stark contrast to her once fiery demeanor.
There was nothing particularly special about the ceremony, no prayers or reminiscing, just the simple reading of Bonnie’s personal records, stating that the information would be archived in the Historical Materials.
She would become a part of history.
The significance of the three witnesses present was that they would each examine the accuracy of these records from different angles.
When Glen saw the parts related to himself, he was at a loss for words.
Bonnie had always wanted him to be a certain kind of person.
That’s why he was convinced that she cared about the person she wanted him to become, rather than him himself.
But he didn’t know that in her personal records, Bonnie had designated their relationship as husband and wife, not the disposable mating partner he had assumed.
However, Bonnie never applied to sync their partnership, so Glen didn’t know.
Now, Glen felt bewildered.
He even began to wonder if he had misunderstood all along.
Perhaps Bonnie had accepted him not for his status as an S-class Navigator, but because she genuinely loved him.
Leonard Lee noticed the discrepancy, too, and asked Glen, “Do you want to correct your marriage entry to the accurate paired relationship?”
Glen hesitated for a long time, then shook his head. In his own record, he also changed their relationship from partners to husband and wife. “No, it’s accurate.”
Leonard Lee frowned. “But without reporting to Eridanus Civil Affairs Department, your relationship has no legal significance.”
Glen gave a wry smile. “Does it really matter? We’re 946 light-years away from Eridanus. If it matters to us, that’s enough.”
Lee: “Alright then, Jammie, do you agree? To record your father and mother’s relationship as husband and wife and file away.”
Jammie shook his head. “I disagree. My father has never fulfilled his duty as a husband for even one day.”
…
The atmosphere on the deck suddenly became tense.
After a long time, Leonard Lee said, “I am very sorry, Jammie is Bonnie’s only legal guardian, and we have to respect his opinion. As her supervisor, I must ensure the accuracy of the deceased records.”
Glen shrugged. “It doesn’t matter, none of it matters.”
He appeared calm, as if he didn’t care at all.
But no one knew that his life’s beliefs were shaking in that brief moment.
If he were still who he was before, he wouldn’t have cared about forming a genuine marital relationship.
He had barely been moved once, only to be rejected by his own son.
In that instant, Glen felt both the love that Bonnie had quietly bestowed on him and the clear hatred displayed by Jammie.
He also felt the difficulty that Leonard Lee was facing.
It had been a long time since the emotional ups and downs of others affected him so significantly.
After reviewing the records, Jammie urged, “Alright, that’s enough. It’s time to say goodbye to my mother.”
There was a blue physical button next to Leonard Lee’s hand.Once pressed, the crystal coffin will be ejected from the deck, fly out of the curvature layer of Heart Fire, and enter the original three-dimensional space.
Subsequently, the quark reactor in the coffin will ignite, decomposing Bonnie’s body into basic particles.
As humans stepped out of the Earth, a strict space funeral method was already formed.
Human bodies should never be arbitrarily thrown into space, as this would expose too many secrets of humanity.
Even if accidents resulted in human bodies being lost in outer space, professional undertakers must be sent to clean up the scene.
“Wait, Bonnie left us a video. We must fulfill the deceased’s last wish.”
James said impatiently, “There’s no need. My father was a stubborn man, and this would only disappoint my mother’s soul even more. Isn’t that right? My father, you also think it’s not necessary to waste time, right?”
“No, I want to watch it.”
Glen shook his head firmly.
This time, James had no right to refuse.
Leonard Lee clicked the play button.
A halo flickered in front of the three of them, and in the blink of an eye, a holographic projection of a pale-faced Bonnie sitting in a chair appeared.
Now the scene showed a holographic Bonnie lying in the coffin and another lifelike Bonnie sitting in front of them.
If people from the early 21st century saw this scene, they would probably faint from fear.
But people nowadays have become accustomed to it.
Speaking slowly and with her breath seemingly hanging by a thread, Bonnie began.
However, she pronounced each word clearly.
She was always this serious in nature.
Even in her last words, she wouldn’t allow herself to be incoherent.
“When you see this video, my funeral should be nearing its end. I took an overdose of the wake-up drug ten hours ago. Just now, I completed the planet excavation plan for the Mechanical Clan settlement we found after our arrival. Now I only have ten minutes left to live.”
“There’s something I have to say before I die. If I don’t let it out and take it with me into the stars, I think I’ll regret it. Glen, are you there?”
The holographic Bonnie in the void stared at the person in the seat next to the bar with empty but somehow expectant eyes, as if looking at him.
Despite knowing that the real Bonnie could no longer hear his reply, Glen couldn’t help but nod, “I’m here.”
The person in the video suddenly smiled bitterly, “Actually, I don’t know if you’re there or not. But it doesn’t matter, I’ll assume you are.”
Seeing her slightly desolate smile, Glen could not help but nod again for some reason.
“Glen, I want to apologize to you. I always thought I knew you very well, but now I finally realize I was wrong. I shouldn’t have always used other people’s standards to ask you to be this or that.”
“Glen, you are you. You must be the most special person in the universe for me. Do you know? I lied to you, Glen. I love you. Yes, I love you.”
“I admit that the first time I noticed you, it was because of your talent, advancing from a nobody to an S-class navigator in just three years. You don’t believe this is love, but I think it is. Love can have reasons; I’m crazy about your talent. Your every move affects my heart.”
“But I was wrong. I was only invested in my own world. I always asked things of you and wanted to change you. I never thought that as a mediocre person with ordinary talent, I shouldn’t use my pitiful imagination to figure out the thinking of a genius.”
“Now I have to say goodbye to this universe. I’ve finally learned to face myself. Glen, will you forgive me? Will you become the kind of person you want to be? When we reach K Star, when we face difficulties, Glen, will you bravely stand up and tell everyone that Bonnie’s husband can be a great hero in dire straits?”
“Right?”
At this point, the voice suddenly stopped.
Bonnie’s image abruptly disappeared, leaving only the flickering fluorescent simulated starry sky.
Glen was dumbfounded.
Suddenly, he fell to the ground with a thud.
He held his head in his hands and began to wail in despair.
Tears flooded through, piercing his heart.
He finally realized that he had missed Bonnie in his life.
The greatest sadness in life might be spending decades together, keeping each other’s company, yet keeping a passionate heart a thousand miles away.
Glen finally relearned the meaning of pain and the feeling of mixed regret and remorse.
Unstoppable strong emotions finally broke through the shackles of mechanical thinking, devouring his reborn soul like surging waves.
Far away at Cetus UV Star,
Harrison Clark remained silent for a long time.
Glen broke the constraints of mechanical thinking and completed his metamorphosis.
The new experiment was successful.
It had taken Glen’s half-life and Bonnie’s entire life.
What do you think?
