Chapter 18: Such a Lovely Girl, Yet She’s a…
Hearing the voice, Lu Yu turned and saw a striking figure.
Clad in a white tracksuit, her sleek black hair fell gracefully onto her shoulders, complementing her delicate features perfectly.
A few tiny beads of sweat glistened on her forehead, but instead of marring her appearance, they accentuated her youthful energy, drawing the attention of onlookers.
As she entered the breakfast shop, several men stole furtive glances at her, and one unfortunate soul with a girlfriend earned himself a swift two-finger jab as punishment.
Lu Yu recognised the girl immediately. She was Tang Wan, his high school classmate.
They had spent three years in the same school, though their relationship never went beyond the occasional nod of acknowledgement.
Lu Yu had always preferred solitude, spending his time reading rather than mingling in cliques like other boys. This meant he had few friends during school and even fewer after graduation.
Tang Wan, on the other hand, was different. Despite her aloof demeanour, her striking looks and athletic prowess made her a prominent figure, the centre of attention at school.
Lu Yu had borrowed a pen from her a few times, but he was self-aware enough to know not to pursue someone like her. He had no interest in chasing after campus celebrities, so their relationship remained that of ordinary classmates.
In this world, school wasn’t just about preparing for desk jobs; it was a means of learning human history, culture, and the ongoing process of passing civilisation to the next generation.
Education here wasn’t merely about knowledge—it was about preserving the essence of humanity.
After all, it was civilisation and language that defined humanity as a species.
History had been Lu Yu’s favourite subject, though he often lamented that the content was heavily redacted, with much omitted for fear of controversy.
Since Tang Wan had greeted him, it would have been rude to ignore her. Smiling, Lu Yu said, “Tang Wan, you’re here for breakfast too?”
“Mm, just finished exercising,” she replied succinctly, walking directly to the counter to place her order.
Lu Yu didn’t press for further conversation. They were merely classmates, after all.
Besides, while she was undoubtedly beautiful, Lu Yu’s exposure to the extraordinary world had shifted his aspirations toward mastering ultimate power.
Women?
How could they compare to the joy of editing monsters?
If beauty was the goal, he could extract materials from mermaids or snakes and create a Medusa in no time.
Before long, Tang Wan returned with a tray of soup dumplings and soy milk. She approached his table and asked softly, “May I sit here?”
Noticing the crowded shop, Lu Yu figured she couldn’t find another seat and nodded his agreement.
Tang Wan placed her tray down and began eating gracefully, as if the simple soup dumplings were a gourmet meal. Her elegance was captivating.
Lu Yu couldn’t help but think that attractive people even made eating look pleasing. No wonder people in his previous life always emphasised dating someone good-looking—arguing would likely feel less frustrating.
Perhaps he should try eating in front of a mirror next time. Being this handsome, why not use it to his advantage?
As he indulged in this narcissistic thought, Tang Wan suddenly asked, “The northern district was attacked by spider monsters last night. Were you affected?”
“If I were, would I be sitting here eating?”
Lu Yu rolled his eyes, unable to resist a sarcastic retort.
Tang Wan nodded, apparently satisfied with his response, and returned to her meal without another word.
Lu Yu appreciated the silence; he wasn’t one for conversation during meals.
After finishing, he left a ten-yuan bill on the table, nodded to the shop owner, and walked out.
Behind him, Tang Wan looked up at his retreating figure, her blue eyes tinged with a hint of disappointment. She murmured to herself, “I really don’t know how to start a conversation…”
Her gaze fell on the disposable chopsticks Lu Yu had used, resting on the edge of the steamer. Fixating on them, she swallowed nervously, visibly conflicted.@@novelbin@@
Glancing around to ensure no one was watching, she steeled herself, grabbed the chopsticks, and slipped them into her pocket.
Her usually cold face flushed with a faint blush as she hurriedly placed ten yuan on the table and left the shop.
Unbeknownst to her, the shop owner, emerging from the kitchen, had witnessed the entire scene. The bald, middle-aged man sighed and muttered, “Such a lovely girl, but what a weirdo…”
Elsewhere, on a bustling street, Lu Yu was oblivious to Tang Wan’s peculiar actions. With his head down, he navigated through the crowd.
Although the northern district had suffered from the monster attack, the rest of the city remained unaffected. Work continued as usual, keeping the metropolis running smoothly.
Lu Yu wasn’t wandering aimlessly; he was on his way to test one of his skills. Following the map on his phone, he crossed several streets before arriving at his destination.
Hang City’s Eastern District Flower and Bird Market!
What do you think?
