Chapter 963: Chapter 569: Something’s Not Right! (Two Chapters in One)_2

“Yes…”

Weiwei nodded shyly.

Fortunately, as they walked on, the surroundings remained silent, suggesting that it didn’t seem like anyone was standing guard below.

And as they advanced, a blurry door-like object gradually emerged ahead.

Qin Yuan and Weiwei were both startled.

“There seems to be a door ahead! We’ve reached the end!”

Weiwei said excitedly.

Qin Yuan nodded slightly, signaling her to stop talking.

He crept forward on tiptoe and illuminated the door ahead with his flashlight.

Just as they had surmised, it was an iron door, dark and heavy, with no way to see what was behind it.

Approaching, Qin Yuan closely examined the location of the door lock, which was secured with a large, sophisticated padlock—without a key, they would find it very hard to open.

“Oh no, this door is locked, and we don’t have the key!”

Weiwei said, a bit disheartened.

“Don’t worry.”

Qin Yuan replied with a relaxed expression, taking out a sharp, needle-like object from his backpack.

“What’s this?”

Weiwei asked curiously.

“The Universal Lockpick, Lin Xiaoxiao gave it to me.”

Qin Yuan said solemnly.

“I never knew you were such a miracle worker! Nothing seems to slow you down!”

Weiwei said with a laugh.

Qin Yuan smiled but did not speak, instead seriously fiddling with the gadget.

“Although Lin Xiaoxiao gave this to me, I haven’t used it before and am still not familiar with it.”

Qin Yuan said as he tinkered.

Weiwei raised an eyebrow but kept silent, intently watching Qin Yuan’s movements.

After fiddling for quite some time, Qin Yuan had made no substantial progress, his hand growing numb, and the lock’s keyhole remained unyielding.

“Let me give it a try.”

Weiwei said from the side.

“Do you know how? It may look like a pen, but this is high-end equipment.”

“There are many buttons on it, with an abundance of functions.”

Qin Yuan explained.

“Just give it to me.”

Weiwei didn’t say much more, simply taking the lockpicking pen from Qin Yuan’s hands.

She went forward and began to manipulate it earnestly.

Shortly after, there was a loud ‘clunk,’ and the lock opened.

Surprise immediately appeared on Qin Yuan’s face.

“Wow, you are really something!”

“Hmph, did you really think I’m a total novice?!”

Weiwei replied, pouting her dissatisfaction.

“Alright, alright, you’re amazing, Your Highness. Let’s hurry in and see exactly what’s going on,”

After that, Qin Yuan first pulled open the iron door with a creak and peeked inside to assess the situation.

It was still pitch-dark, utterly silent, but upon careful listening, a faint sound of wind could still be heard.

Qin Yuan frowned slightly.

Seeing his expression, Weiwei became puzzled.

“What’s it like inside?”

“It seems like there’s nothing, but I hear the sound of the wind. There must be another path leading deeper.”

“It’s really disgusting and long! These people, making such a creepy and terrifying place underground; their minds are truly dark!”

Weiwei said angrily.

Qin Yuan pursed his lips and shrugged, neither agreeing nor disagreeing.

In his mind, Dong Zhejun was exactly that kind of person.

Evil and shameless, with conduct that encourages wrongdoing.

This design of the secret passageway had to be acknowledged; it very much resembled the path they had followed previously at the Daybreak Organization’s headquarters while searching for Green Snake.

Moreover, this path was even more intricate, requiring extra caution.

On this path, the odor was suffocating, and as they went further down, it became increasingly intense and the pathway narrower.

It narrowed to the point where only half a body could pass, flanked by rough and hard stone walls.

This sensation of walking through a hidden corridor was all too familiar to Qin Yuan.

But bringing Weiwei, the sheltered young lady, into such a journey could mean she would suffer quite a bit.

Indeed, the dark passage proved to be even longer than they had imagined.

And perhaps due to her foot injury from before, Weiwei was already showing signs of fatigue.

Her expression also seemed somewhat strained.

“Are you okay? Shall we take a rest?”

Qin Yuan witnessed all of this.

“I’m fine, I can keep going. If we stop here now, we will definitely encounter a lot of trouble.”

Weiwei’s expression was slightly grim, as she spoke through clenched teeth.

Seeing Weiwei in discomfort, Qin Yuan also felt uneasy, but after all, the mission was of utmost importance at the moment, and he could only think of a more secure solution.

“Come on, I’ll carry you.”

As he spoke, Qin Yuan bent down in front of Weiwei.

“Ah, is that appropriate?!”

Weiwei said with some embarrassment. Qin Yuan didn’t waste more words and directly hoisted her onto his back, continuing their journey inward.

“You wanted to come over here yourself. Now that this situation has arisen, I’m considering the bigger picture. If I leave you here, it will definitely cause problems. You think I want to conduct the operation with someone on my back?”

Qin Yuan had an irritated look about him.

After Qin Yuan said this, Weiwei was already feeling embarrassed about the sudden ailment in her body. His comment made her feel even more awkward, so she stopped responding.

Now, his pace became liberated and much quicker than before.

And so, Qin Yuan carried Weiwei for another stretch of their journey.

Finally, they emerged from the cramped passage into a comparatively spacious room, or rather, a secret chamber.

Because the air was utterly still here, the walls emitted strange streaks of light.

Qin Yuan carefully surveyed the area, which resembled a corridor-like room, with a dark tunnel facing them and four flickering candle-lamps on either side.

Besides these lamps, there was nothing else.

Doubts grew in Qin Yuan’s mind.

They had walked for about twenty minutes since entering, covering a distance of nearly one kilometer.

How could they have hidden Geng Hu so deeply? This also made it inconvenient for them to come down and check.

And the most eerie part was the complete absence of guards over such a long distance, not only increasing the prisoner’s chances of escape but also posing a significant risk for a high-value detainee.

However, the sound of wind ahead broke his train of thought.

The wind was louder than before, indicating that the exit was near.

Weiwei, too, clearly heard the sound and joy appeared on her face.

“Captain Qin! There’s wind ahead! We might be reaching the exit soon!”

Qin Yuan nodded in agreement.

“Probably, but we can’t be sure what’s waiting for us on the other side,”

Qin Yuan said.

“At least it’s an exit! We can leave this foul and filthy place!”

“We haven’t found Geng Hu yet.”

“There’s nothing in this large space, something feels off.”

Qin Yuan voiced his unease.

Hearing this, Weiwei was also somewhat confused, but her old injury and the overwhelming sense of exhaustion took over her entire body.

She no longer cared about the search mission, for her own health was the priority.

Qin Yuan led Weiwei towards the corridor ahead.

Due to the length of time they had spent there, his flashlight was now in a weak state and could barely illuminate the path ahead.

Weiwei clung tightly to Qin Yuan’s back in the dark and silent environment, not daring to make a sound.

Upon entering the slightly wider passage and walking forward more than ten meters, the wind grew stronger.

With bursts of wind, a circular exit began to emerge in front of them.

“We made it!”

Weiwei exclaimed excitedly from behind.

They could already smell the fresh air mingled with the scent of earth from outside.

As Qin Yuan saw the light ahead, he quickened his pace, taking two steps at a time, and promptly reached the outside.

He poked his head out.

They had emerged at an outlet of the sewer system.

Qin Yuan stepped outside and looked around. He didn’t see any signs of Daybreak soldiers nearby, and there was no sign of their position either.

They had found the exit, but it also meant that their search operation had ended in failure.

“We still haven’t found Geng Hu.”

Qin Yuan muttered to himself.
