Chapter 156: Second Layer of the Forest of Disruption? [17]
As Lillian made her way back, Marionette was setting up camp. However, as she was doing this, she couldn't help but wonder why Lillian was taking so long. She was just checking out the Spider, right?
After pulling up the tent, she opened its curtains and took a curious look inside.
Once doing so, she found a strange, small object inside it. She pinched and held it up to her eyes.
It was a small, crumpled piece of paper. And there seemed to be writing on the inside. Was this... Lillian's Saving Talisman?
"..."
She thought back to Lillian's injuries.
She was without a doubt at death's door, especially with how much blood she lost. And if she hadn't arrived on time, Lillian would've almost lost her...
Just as she could finish the dreadful thought, Lillian's voice appeared behind her.
"Yo!"
Lillian appeared without her cloak, crawling into the tent, and finding Marionette...
"Uhh... what are you doing?"
Huddled in a corner, with her knees to her chest, and tightly clutching the crumbled talisman in her hand. It seemed the Assassin hadn't realised what she was doing until Lillian arrived.
"..." She stared silently at Lillian before holding up the crumpled talisman before their eyes. With the ball, pinched in between her index and thumb, she asked:
"... Why was this in the tent?"
"Hm? What is it?" Lillian squinted her eyes at the object. She soon widened them in realisation. "Oh! So that's where my talisman went!"
"You knew it was missing?" Marionette narrowed her eyes.
"Well uh..." Lillian rubbed the back of her head, "I kinda realised when I was just bleeding out. Hehe..." She giggled nervously at the end.
She then reached towards the crumpled talisman. "But anyway! Now that you found I should probably—" But just as she was about to take it off Marionette's hand, she watched as she pulled her hand back.
"Huh? What are you—" She was then suddenly brought over and flipped onto her back.
She stared up in confusion. Staring as Marionette pinned her down with a... complex expression?
Marionette held her down. She tightly wrapped her fingers around her wrist, pushing her strongly against the ground. She then said in a cold tone:
"You could've died due to your carelessness..."
"Well, I, uhh..." Lillian stared at her. Her heart was beating more rapidly than usual. Although Marionette was scolding her, she couldn't help but get lost in how attractive she was up close.
She pouted a bit and responded with:
"You make it sound like you don't normally do this. Losing an arm and all that."
"That's because I don't. You know those aren't my fault."
Lillian rolled her eyes, "Yeah, but you didn't bother regrowing your arms back in the Trial. You could've died there from blood loss, you know..."
Marionette narrowed her eyes, slightly annoyed, "I'm aware. But I knew I would be fine if I crossed the portal. That's why I didn't waste one of my potions."
Lillian sighed before shrugging, "That may be so but... ugh, whatever. Doesn't really matter, right? I'm still alive and all—"
"That isn't the point, Lillian!"
Lillian stared up at Marionette, wide-eyed. This was the first time she raised her voice at her.
The Assassin's eyes, hidden under her bangs, shook a bit. Truly out of character for her.
She then lowered herself, sitting on Lillian's hip and staring down at her scoldingly. She then said:
"I am different from you Lillian. My body is much stronger and durable than yours. I can risk receiving such serious injuries. Because I know I would survive..."
She then went silent.
She leaned down, inches away from the white-haired girl's face. She then continued in a strained voice.
"But you... Lillian... don't have any of the enhancements I have—especially ones that would let you have a better chance at surviving severe blood loss. You're more fragile than me. Weaker than me."
She then moved her right hand away from her wrist, gliding it across her arm. She then placed it on Lillian's cheek, strongly clutching it.
"Unless you get something that would ensure your survivability, please don't compare yourself to me. I'm in a much different situation compared to you, Lillia—"
Chu~...
... Marionette's eyes widened.
She watched in shock as Lillian's lips left her cheek. She then made eye contact with the girl, who stared back, unbothered.
Lillian smiled both softly and playfully.
"Don't worry, beautiful. I won't die yet." She then moved her right hand towards Marionette's right cheek.
"Definitely not until I 'bagged' you, at least."
Marionette's eyes fixed themselves on the hand placed on her cheek, frozen in place.
She was still processing the stimulation she received, which... Had left her heart beating extremely fast...
In an attempt to hide her blush, she dropped onto Lillian, pressing their chests together and burying her face in the crook of her neck.
Lillian smiled wryly at this.
'Back to this again, huh?' She chuckled, stroking the back of the woman's head.
Her ears then twitched at Marionette's muffled voice.
"Did you even hear what I said...?"
Lillian chuckled and moved her lips to her ear. She blew hot air into it, causing Marionette to surprisingly shiver a bit before whispering softly:
"I did. Don't worry. Like any other person, I know I'm more fragile and weaker than you. That's definitely a fact." Her fingers ran through Marionette's silky black hair.
"That's why you should take care of me, Marionette. Who knows when I might suddenly "break" one day..."
She then went quiet.
Her eyes glanced up at the roof of the tent. She thought about what to say next. And finally, she did after a few moments.
"We're friends, right? Friends take care of each other."
Lillian noticed that Marionette seemed to shiver and jolt a bit at her words.
"Friends... take care of each other," Marionette repeated quietly, moving her face deeper into Lillian's neck.
She then wrapped her arms around her waist, "You're... my friend. You know that, right? Mine?"
"Eh?"
What do you think?
