Chapter 756: Crafty Monkey

Chapter 756: Crafty Monkey

Around the time Chen Wentian, Jasmine, and Sundew were attacking the Great Smoky Mountains, the southern monkey kingdom had also received messages carried by signal flies. But instead of being in a drunken stupor and ignoring the alarm like the fat toad Huo Ping had done, the monkeys chose to directly head north to check out the situation.

As such, King Wu, General Jiao, and General Kong headed north together. In a short while, they were able to reach the southern border of the Glittering Forest unopposed. Around the time King Huo Tu was finally subdued, King Wu received the information he had been waiting for from the various squads of flying cloud monkeys that served as his eyes and ears in the region.

These were considered monkeys but they were creatures born of the sky. Their bones were light and their bodies were covered with soft fur akin to clouds. Using a unique ability within their bodies, they could float freely and blend into the clouds, making them excellent observers.

King Wu finally frowned after he had listened to the report from the chief cloud monkey. “Strange. Very strange. Queen Sundew was attacked by two powerful opponents, both at the Spirit King Realm. She was eventually subdued by them, with her four mantis lords being too late to come to her aid. Right now, she and the two enemies have gone north to attack King Huo Tu.”

“Humans of Beast God Sanctum?” General Jiao asked.

“Demons from the far east?” General Kong asked.

“No,” King Wu shook his head. His eyes lit up as he realized something, “It has to be the fox. Who else would seek to subjugate the mantis instead of simply killing her? It seems that the little fox has finally grown up.”

After saying that, King Wu stared at the northern horizon, silently contemplating.

Wu was a martial monkey, a species of monkey that had a similar build and size to humans. Their natural talent was intelligence and a strong mind. What others didn’t know was that his mental prowess was especially strong, giving him the ability to do many things. He could tell lies from the truth. He could sense the emotions and intentions of others. And if someone was weakened or vulnerable, he could examine parts of their memories and rewrite them to his desire. It was a frightening ability, one that he kept close to his heart.

It was after the human attack on the fox lair that he had chosen to rebel, chosen to fight against his spiritual oaths. Sundew and Huo Tu had been seriously injured. Wu had helped them heal using some special herbs that also weakened their mental barriers. Through this, he was able to modify their memories of Madam Zhiyue and Little Miss Zhiyue.

Thinking of the fox, he felt a surge of anger. He had been minding his own business, cultivating in the forest when he had been kidnapped by Madam Zhiyue. Of course, he was interested in her blessing but he wasn’t interested in becoming a servant. However, when he refused, she simply smacked his buttocks like a child until he cried for mercy. He instinctively rubbed them as he thought of those times, still feeling the phantom pains even now.

He never wanted to be a slave. He had vowed to himself to fight back and had found the opportunity after the human attack. However, the key was still Jasmine. The blessing of the six beasts was tied to her. At any time, she could come back and enslave them once more.

If only…

If only the three beasts had tried harder to take down Beast God Sanctum, to kill Jasmine. If only the other two had been as willing to sacrifice everything to achieve that goal.

But they had wasted too much time. It had been over five hundred years since then. It was more than enough time for Little Miss Zhiyue to grow up. Since she dared to show up at this time, it meant that she had enough strength to subdue them all. But he wasn’t going to let that happen.

“Jiao, Kong, hear my orders.”

“Yes, my king!”

“Yes, my king!”

“From today, the monkey kingdom of treasure mountain is no more. We will go our separate ways. I hope that you both can continue to grow and become Spirit Kings one day. When that happens, perhaps we may meet again.”

“My king… what do you mean.? My king!” General Jiao shouted.

“We don’t have a lot of time.” King Wu said. “The fox will come back south soon, no doubt after having subdued the toad. I won’t be a match for them.”

He waved his hand, letting a wave of spiritual energy wash over the two monkey lords.

“I am releasing you both from your oaths to me. I am leaving this place, this whole subcontinent, for good. Where I am going, you two cannot follow. You must survive on your own from now on.”

“My king!” General Jiao wailed.

“My king…” General Kong muttered.

King Wu smiled, “Jiao, you can survive anywhere. If you don’t want to be found, nothing can find you. Kong, you are still a bit rough around the edges. If you head further east, you can establish another monkey kingdom for yourself and live out the rest of your days. Go now, do not follow me.”

With that, the diminutive monkey turned and sped off towards the southeast.

General Jiao and General Kong stared at the figure until it disappeared. Then, they stared at each other.

“Farewell,” Jiao said simply and headed southwest.

Kong was finally left alone.

As one of Chen Wentian’s living souls, he had wanted to follow King Wu, to stay by the crafty monkey’s side so that Jasmine could get another chance to capture it. But now that was impossible. In this endless world, it was impossible to catch a Spirit King if one wanted to run and hide.

With a long sigh, Chen Wentian, as General Kong, turned and flew towards the north.

---

“The monkey is gone.” Chen Wentian said.

“What?” Jasmine asked.

“The monkey king, King Wu, he ran.”

Sundew snorted, “I knew he would run, that sly bastard.”

“That bastard.” Huo Tu muttered, “I would have turned him into a roasted monkey. That traitor!”

“It’s fine, from what you two have described, the matter cannot be completely blamed on him.” Chen Wentian said, “If the humans never attacked your nest, this would have never happened. And the monkey only did what served its interest.”

Truthfully, Chen Wentian was impressed by the monkey. The monkey’s decision to abandon its kingdom and its subordinates completely for its own sake meant that its mind was exceptionally sharp and also exceptionally cruel. It was willing to do anything for its own sake and never for others’ sake. It had accepted divine power from Jasmine’s mother but it still held a rebellious heart.

It was a loss but not a big loss. When he had planned this mission, there was always a risk that any or all of the Spirit King beasts would be able to escape. If Sundew had been able to escape, then their mission would have been a complete failure. If Huo Tu had been able to escape, then the mission would have ended right here. However, the monkey escaping was a fatal blow. Right now, they still had four Spirit Kings in total which was enough to go against the two old farts from Beast God Sanctum.

“Next time I see that stupid monkey, I’ll slap it until it cries mommy,” Jasmine said, clenching her fist.

Chen Wentian tried not to laugh, “I think that was the problem the first time. Anyway… let’s move. We still have work to do. Without the monkey, we will move directly from the third phase of the plan to the fourth phase. We will have a difficult battle ahead.”

He flew towards the south with Jasmine and the other beasts right behind.
