Infinite Evolution: My Idle Evolution System

Chapter 231 Memphis's Purpose in the Plan

"So everything you said…"

"A lot of it was partially true," Barla said, stopping her approach a few meters away. "The original owners of these bodies really did coincidentally locate and capture one of our own. But by then, the higher-ups sent out the Vanguard—us—to deal with the World-class Hunters who dared interrogate and torture one of our own.

The story about Victor and Dante was also true; they did indeed come by to report their findings. But considering they were the only ones who knew about this phenomenon, we quickly disposed of them while they weren't looking. That Victor—he was a fast worm, even faster than any on our side who wasn't an Elder. Stabbing him in the back—where his speed made no difference—did the trick though."

Memphis's mind swirled with many things; everything was so overwhelming. She should've known this was a trap, but how could she?? They were supposed to be her Guildmates! Why would they all of a sudden turn on her!?

"That's right…" Memphis mumbled. "Why target me? I knew nothing about any of you before you told me… Why do all this?? And why do you want my body??"

The Battlemonger cackled. "We targeted you for the same reason we want your body and also for the same reason that we're taking the conquering of your World at a snail's pace," he said. "Your hometown—the young man who saved you from inside a Gate and took you home. He cared for you, he gave you a place to call your own after you lost the only family you had. But one day—when you figured out you had power—you left him. Does this ring any bells for you?"

"!!!" 'Cassius!'

"Bingo!" the Bladedevil said as if reading her mind. "We have eyes and ears everywhere. And you may have underestimated him—which also may have been why you left—but deep down… deep down, you knew he was special. Far more special than you could ever hope to compare with. That was why you truly left, wasn't it?"

Memphis felt something sting her heart, causing her emotions to vortex. She knew he was right. Why else would whenever she saw someone strong, she immediately stacked them up against Cassius and felt that they were somehow lacking in comparison?@@novelbin@@

But what did that have to do with these imposters' interest in Cassius? Their reason for invading was him?? Why???

"The only thing you failed to realize," said the Battlemonger, "was precisely how special Cassius actually is. The reason we're doing everything as we're doing now is because of him. The reason why we were instantly there to scout you at your lowest with an offer you couldn't refuse was also because of him.

In fact, the only reason we're acting now on you instead of ten days later—when the World's End Gate's Final Raid happens—is because of your abrupt awakening to your latest Angel Bloodline. Angels are troublesome no matter the world, and we can't have you somehow reporting back to them."

Memphis pondered their words, then paused. "My body," she said. "Why do you need it…? Wait…"

The edges of Barla's lips curved upward. "Yes, Sweetie. We plan to use you to lure Cassius into a trap, which will also serve as a trap for our true target. This is what we have been setting up since we first faced that Anomaly, and now—even if that Freak does interfere—there will be nothing he can do. A day—ten days from now—when the World experiences its END—that day will mark the day we're finally able to ascend this accursed Tower and send down the true powerhouses of our mighty race—the Dissonants!!"

An evil laughter contagiously spread among the five Dissonants, leaving Memphis to experience wave after wave of emotions. So much was being dumped on her at once, and she barely understood a fourth of what they were talking about.

But what she needed no context to figure out was that… Cassius was being viciously hunted down…

She knew not the reasons for this, but if it was to happen—

OOOM!

—Then she had to take out a few of them before they could get anywhere close to harming her Cassius!!

With the full power of a World-class Hunter, she burst forward—her first target being Barla.

"Did you really think we didn't see this coming beforehand?" said the Battlemonger. "We mentioned it previously, did we not? Why we had you focus on Barla over me, the Gentlemanly Saint, or the Bladedevil? You used that pesky Angelic Ability on Barla, did you not? Well, guess who's stronger than her?"

"!!!"

Before Memphis had the time to react, a powerful blow sent her cannonballing into the side of the barrier, the impact knocking the wind out of her. Blood spewed out of her mouth as soon as ripples spread from where she impacted.

As she slid down the barrier, her vision began to blur, with her golden crossed eyes struggling to stay open.

Once collision with the floor occurred, she nearly lost consciousness but managed to hear a few last words before that happened:

"I guess we did go a bit overboard in this plan," said the Battlemonger. "After all—even right now—the human worm is barely able to replicate the power of Barla. It would've been impossible for her to replicate my power. But it matters not in the end."

"Indeed," the Bladedevil said. "As long as the mission gets completed, nothing matters."

The Battlemonger eerily nodded, then motioned for Barla. "Go and take her body and memories. Remember to send her husk to the Mothership, same as all the others."

"This isn't my first rodeo," Barla said as she approached the already knocked-out-cold girl. "I'll teleport her husk to where we keep all the other high-profile husks. They will make good food for the Voidworms when the Voidworm Feeding Season arrives."

Without further ado, Barla placed her hand against the unconscious Memphis. Then she made use of a technology infused into the blood of all active Dissonants called 'Nanomorph.'
