Chapter 28: Nightmare
"Had fun?" A strong arm wrapped her stomach and pulled her to him. She rested her back on him as he held her arms and hands, wrapping them around her body as he did.
He had a wide smile and he leaned down to kiss her lips. "Jealous?"
She shrugged. "A little."
Cauis’ eyes brightened at this, and rewarded her good answer with a wet kiss on the cheek.
This was when Cauis noticed something unusual. Her eyes were glazed—not in lust but due to an actual daze—as if she was really thinking of something worrying.
"What’s wrong?" He asked, turning her to him. When he saw she just stared at him, he bent down to carry her to the sofa.
She naturally hugged him as she was lifted, inhaling his natural sandalwood scent. She remained sitting on his thigh as they settled down on the sofa.
He gently caressed the side of her thigh, but it wasn’t to seduce, but to comfort. "Tell me."
She hummed and rested her chin on his shoulder and wrapped her arm around his neck, embracing him. "A few days ago I had a very bad nightmare."
As she told him, there was a bit of a whimpering tone that both broke his heart and aroused his member. "It was really horrible." She said, "There were monsters, hordes of them, and they had human skins. Of course, those monsters weren’t really people, you know what I mean?"
"Seeing Laura reminded me." She told him,
Caius, as he claimed, was not ruled by his dick. He knew this was a serious matter to Khalifa, so he didn’t act on impulse. "Tell me more about it."
"I dreamed the world would end in two months." She paused and raised her head. "Before finals, almost everyone suddenly turned into monsters. Zombies. They started eating everyone, their friends, their family…"
"It felt so… real."
"Why would Laura remind you of it?"
"Because I was there… and we were running along the halls, and I was too late to get to the door and I—"
It was a nightmare, and Cauis couldn’t help but embrace her again in comfort. "Don’t worry, love, I will protect you." He said with certainty. He patted her head and kissed her cheeks.
"Is that why you suddenly wanted to quit school and… work so hard?"
She nodded. "Do you think I’m stupid?" She mumbled, large eyes looking at him guardedly.
He chuckled, tapping her cute nose. "Of course not."
"The point is. I want you to prepare as well, okay?"
Cauis paused, but he nodded in the end. "Have you started preparing?" He asked, when Khalifa nodded he seemed to have thought of something and suddenly stood up.
He gently placed her on the sofa and went to the room to get something.
He walked to her and handed her his card. "Here."
Khalifa flinched, a little touched. "This— I don’t need this… I—"
"I know it’s small and would do much, but—"
"That is not what I mean." She quickly corrected him, "How will you prepare?"
"Help prepare for me." Like a wife prepared luggage for her husband, he thought to himself. "We’ll buy them together."
"Fine." She sighed, but a touched smile graced her lips. She walked over to wrap her arms around his torso.
"Thank you."
Cauis’ smile widened as he embraced her tighter into his arms.
’Anything for you’

For that day, the two decided to start buying the items that didn’t have an expiration date.
For example a few pairs of winter clothing and several pairs of leather clothing (for their defense stat). They bought underwear and boots, as well as winter articles like earmuffs and gloves.
They also began ordering the portable machines, like portable solar chargers, batteries, flashlights, and others. They ordered a few sets of each, just in case, with Khalifa promising that they had a place to store them safely.
One of the more expensive things they ordered were universal phones with solar batteries, so no matter what happened they would be able to contact each other.
They ordered several for friends.
This actually carved a significant amount of their funds. But Khalifa believed in her money-making skills, and she felt it would be worth it.
Unfortunately, an hour into their shopping, Cauis received an emergency call, asking him to fill in for someone, apologizing for bothering him on his day off.
This person apparently didn’t get the memo that he was on sick leave, thinking he was simply off that day.
However, the man was his immediate supervisor and was begging so pitifully.
Apparently, one of the students was the dean’s daughter, and they could absolutely not leave the class unattended.
"After lunch?" He looked at the time. It was only 11 am. But he had to prepare for the lesson. He frowned and looked at the woman beside him, who smiled at him in return.
"Go."
"You’re not coming with me?"
Cauis looked very dissatisfied, he really didn’t want to end their date. Instead, he just pulled her to a nearby restaurant. "Let’s have an early lunch together, at least." He said, and Khalifa smiled, coming with him.
He took her to one of the more underrated spots in the vicinity, so that they wouldn’t have to line up but have a nevertheless satisfying meal.
It was a noodle restaurant and they ate quite happily, except the damned supervisor was calling for him again. He had no choice but to leave immediately after finishing up his meal.
He looked at Khalifa, who was still eating, very guilty. The latter felt his gaze and smiled at him reassuredly.
"It’s fine." She said, "I’ll stay here and walk around. As long as there’s food, I’ll be satisfied"
Cauis nodded and left with the baggage, kissing her goodbye. Fortunately, their spot was relatively hidden and their PDA did not receive too many side eyes.
"I’ll store these at the house for a while, okay?" He told her, kissing her again on the cheeks. "Be careful, and be sure to call me when you get back home, okay?"
"Yes, yes, mother." She said, sticking her tongue out like a naughty kitten. He couldn’t help but pinch her cheeks.
"I’ll see you soon."
"Hmn."
And he left, heart already missing her when she was still in the same room.
However, never would he think she’d inexplicably find another lover a few hours later.
What do you think?
