Chapter 769: Chapter 769 - The Past Isn’t Over Yet
It was Laura.
Yes. Leon recognized her immediately. Even from behind, her figure, posture, and hairstyle were unmistakable. She still had the exact same look as when they had dinner together earlier that night.
Laura wasn't the type to talk much when surrounded by a crowd. But outside of those
situations-especially on campus-they often talked more. Their schedules overlapped a lot, and they had several shared classes.
But... What was she doing here?
It was almost midnight.
And why did she leave so suddenly?
Was it because she had just seen Leon and Olivia together in the elevator-looking like they were kissing?
...But why was he even thinking about this?
Why did he suddenly feel uneasy?
No-not for the reason some people might assume. Not in that way.
It was just that if it really was Laura... shouldn't he at least go after her?
At least ask something?
Like-why was she even here?
Had she been looking for him?
And if so... why?
Could it not wait until tomorrow?
Leon exhaled slowly and turned to Olivia.
She was standing there, watching him, her head slightly tilted, a peaceful smile on her lips. "Why are you spacing out like that? Something wrong?" she asked.
...Had Olivia done that on purpose?
Did she know Laura was standing there when she suddenly pulled that little stunt?
Leon hadn't noticed anyone before-his attention had been on Olivia the entire time. But when he did finally notice, Laura was already walking away... at an unusually fast pace.
Olivia and Laura.
Or rather-Marlene and Charmelyn.
They had history in Immortal Legacy.
There had been conflict between them before. It all started when Charmelyn had infiltrated an expedition led by Marlene into Hell. That single move cost Marlene a team member and led to the failure of their planned Raid Boss hunt.
And... that had technically been Leon's fault, too. Because he had accidentally killed the Raid Boss they were hunting.
Then, later during the battle against Gremory, the Named Demon-Marlene and Charmelyn had ended up arguing mid-fight. Their disagreement threw the entire team into chaos, leading to multiple defeats and several failed attempts before they could finally regroup.
It had been a long time since all of that happened.
But mistakes—no matter how old-were still mistakes.
And as long as Marlene felt that the past wasn't settled, there was always the chance that something remained unresolved between them.
...Or maybe Leon was just overthinking it.
Maybe Olivia hadn't planned anything. After all, this wasn't the first time she had kissed his cheek.
But tonight... it had felt different.
Too sudden. Too quick.
Leon sighed and shook his head.
"You look tired," Olivia commented again.
He nodded slightly. "Good night. I'll see you tomorrow morning."
"Bye," Olivia said, giving him a small wave before heading down the opposite hallway- toward her own room.
Leon turned toward his own, but his mind was still stuck on one thing.
Laura.
Leon quickened his pace, turning the corner, and there just ahead-stood a woman about to enter her room.
It was Laura.
Without thinking, he called out. "Laura!"
His voice wasn't too loud, but in the quiet hallway, it carried easily.
Laura froze mid-motion, her hand gripping the door handle. For a brief moment, she hesitated—then slowly turned around to face him.
And that was when Leon saw it.
She wasn't good at hiding her emotions.
Her expression was stiff, her usual easy going demeanor nowhere to be seen. Normally, she smiled, or at least kept a calm, composed face.
But now?
Now, her lips trembled slightly, as if she wasn't sure what to say.
Leon closed the distance between them, stepping closer until he was right in front of her.
Laura, still holding the door, shifted slightly, now standing with her back to it as she looked up at him.
Her lips parted slightly, as if trying to form words, but she hesitated again before finally speaking.
"L-Leon... hi..." she said, offering a small, awkward smile.
Leon studied her for a moment before responding. "Hi. I wasn't expecting to see you here this
late. What are you doing here?"
And somehow... It felt strange.
Normally, Laura was the one who initiated conversations between them.
Leon had always been more passive in discussions-he usually just responded rather than starting conversations unless he had something important to say.
...Was he really that passive?
"Ah... yes..." Laura answered, her awkward smile still in place. "Sorry, I forgot to mention it earlier... umh... My house is being renovated, so I decided to stay at this hotel for a while. And since it's closer to the venue for the Eternal Challenge, it just made sense."
"Oh, so that's the reason."@@novelbin@@
His response felt clumsy, even to himself.
And Leon hated that.
They both fell silent.
For a few moments, they simply stood there, occasionally exchanging glances-only to look away immediately. Neither spoke, as if neither of them knew what to say next.
And then, finally, Laura broke the silence.
"Good luck for your battle tomorrow." Her voice was soft, but this time, it carried her usual
tone-the Laura he knew.
Leon let out a small smile. "Thanks. Good night."
He turned around to leave.
But then-
A hand reached out.
No-both of her hands.
Laura.
She grabbed his left hand and held it firmly.
Leon stopped mid-step, feeling the warmth of her hands wrapped around his.
Slowly, he turned his gaze downward-seeing her small hands gripping his tightly.
He took a slow, steady breath and turned back to face her.
Laura lowered her eyes slightly, as if gathering the courage to speak.
"Laura?" he asked quietly. "Is there something you need? Do you need help with your bags or
something?"
"L-Leon..."
Her voice trembled slightly.
What was she thinking right now?
"Yes?" he responded gently.
Laura slowly lifted her gaze.
And in that moment, Leon saw her clearly-truly clearly-for the first time.
This close, he could see every delicate feature of her face, the subtle shifts in her expression.
The Laura he remembered from school was still there-but now, this Laura was different.
More mature.
More refined.
Her skin, smooth like porcelain, reflected the soft hotel lighting, and her eyes-they weren't quite the same as before.
She had changed. In such a short time? Maybe not that short. But still... Had it really been that
long?
Even now, Leon sometimes felt like the Laura he knew and the Laura standing before him were two entirely different people-sharing only the same name and past.
Laura from before was outspoken, lively, and full of laughter-real laughter, not the calm, measured smiles she carried now.
The old Laura would say exactly what was on her mind, unafraid of voicing her thoughts, even in front of a crowd. She was the kind of person who wouldn't hesitate to call out their classmates if anyone dared to say something bad about Leon.
Maybe this had something to do with Laura losing her father. Leon couldn't think of any other
reason why she had changed so much.
Maybe in some ways, her situation was similar to Leon's-he had lost his parents too. But at
least he still had Lily.
Laura had no one. And Leon had lost his parents when he was too young to remember much. The impact of that
loss was different from losing someone when you were already grown.
Laura was now completely alone.
No parents. No siblings.
Friends?
Leon wasn't sure if she had anyone she was truly close to.
At least from what he knew, Laura didn't seem to open up to anyone in the guild. She
participated in activities, but never really let anyone in.
They had been that close... once. Even to the point where their relationship had once become
something more.
But... Leon hadn't thought about that in a long time.
Ever since she had explained everything back then, he had locked those memories away-to
the point where they no longer occupied his thoughts.
The Laura standing before him now-she was just an old friend.
A classmate at university.
A guildmate in Immortal Legacy.
A companion in battle.
Nothing more.
"Leon..."
Her voice brought him back to the moment.
"Yes?" he answered.
Laura hesitated.
Then she bit her lower lip, her hands tightening ever so slightly around his.
And when she looked up again, her eyes no longer wavered.
There was conviction in them now.
"I still love you... just like before."
She said it.
Leon froze.
What do you think?
