Chapter 147 147: Millard Thompson
Inside the villa.
After hearing about her husband's death from Luo An, Mary Anne, with an incredulous expression on her face, covered her mouth and sat down on the sofa with reddened eyes.
A few minutes later, Mary Anne had calmed down, choking back tears, she said:
"Brent and I have been married for 10 years, I thought we would always be together, but..."
Extending a tissue to Mary Anne, Mona, sitting on the sofa, asked in a low voice:
"What happened between you two?"
"All Brent cared about was his work."
Upon hearing Mona's question, Mary Anne seemed to switch on a floodgate, continuously saying:
"Before we got married, he was busy too, but he would still come home.
But after we got married, he was always on business trips, always busy working, even when at home, he'd just stay in his study..."
"…"
Hearing this, Mona looked up at Luo An.
Luo An blinked, not understanding what Mona meant.
"I just couldn't take it anymore,"
Meanwhile, Mary Anne continued her narrative:
"Most of the time after our marriage, I was alone, what's the point of such a marriage? I was too lonely..."
Luo An nodded, resting his chin on his hand.
Then there's a need to clear the blockage, and that's what plumbers do.
At this point, Mary Anne noticed something odd in Mona's expression, and after a pause, she quickly waved her hand and said:
"But I still love Brent, I would never do anything to hurt him."
Mona, hearing this, said emotionlessly:
"But your divorce records seem to suggest otherwise."
"It was just because of money."
Mary Anne sighed:
"As you know, once money gets involved, things always get complicated."
Just then, Luo An received a text message, sent by Lai De.
The forensic autopsy report was out. Brent Hughes died around 11:30 PM last night from a gunshot to the head; the bullet was a 9mm.
Pressing the button to reply with a received and thank you, Luo An pocketed his phone and directed his gaze towards Mary Anne, asking solemnly:
"Where were you around 11:30 PM last night?"
"What do you mean?"
Hearing Luo An's words, Mary Anne first froze, then her face flushed red and she shouted:
"I already told you! I would not hurt Brent!"
"It's just a routine inquiry."
Ignoring Mary Anne's hysterical response, Luo An continued emotionlessly:
"When one spouse dies, the other invariably becomes a prime suspect.
I am asking you now mainly to clear your suspicions, please calm down and answer my question properly."
"Hmph!"
Hearing Luo An's words, Mary Anne scoffed.
After picking up a glass of water and taking a sip, Mary Anne coldly answered:
"I was at an art exhibition in Manhattan District all last night.
There are surveillance cameras there, if you're suspicious, you can go check."
"Okay."
Methodically noting down the address of the art exhibition in his notebook, Luo An continued to ask:
"What about Millard Thompson? Was he with you there last night?"
"No."
Hearing Luo An mention Millard's name, a flicker of a glow appeared in the depths of Mary Anne's eyes, then she shook her head, indicating Millard didn't like such events.
But she then hurriedly explained:
"This couldn't have been done by Millard.
Although they didn't get along, Millard is a good person. He would never commit murder!"
Luo An, who had been watching Mary Anne's expressions closely, raised his eyebrow without showing any reaction to her words.
After scribbling something arbitrarily in his notebook, he asked again:
"Do you know where Millard was last night?"
"He was out drinking with friends."
Seeing Luo An refocusing on Millard Thompson, Mary Anne angrily pulled out her cell phone:
"I'll call Millard back right now!
You can question him yourself, he's definitely not the killer of Brent!"
"..."
Watching her actions, Mona's lips twitched slightly and Luo An's eyes flickered.
Either Mary Anne truly believed Millard wasn't the murderer, or...
Mona looked up at Luo An, who exchanged a knowing look with her.
Both of them silently prepared their pistols.
A few minutes later, a brand-new red sedan pulled up at the villa's main gate.
Smiling as she saw the sedan through the villa's window, Mary Anne announced:
"Millard is back."
"OK."
Luo An and Mona nodded, but before they could speak, the driver of the red sedan, having spotted the black SUV parked outside the villa, suddenly accelerated and sped off into the distance.
"Fu-k!"
Upon seeing this, Mona cursed loudly, about to dash from the villa towards the SUV, when Luo An suddenly grabbed her.
"?"
With a confused face, Mona listened as Luo An whispered urgently into her ear:
"Keep an eye on Mary Anne."
After saying that, Luo An dashed into the SUV and floored the accelerator to chase after them.
Watching the SUV vanish from sight in the blink of an eye, Mona's lips curled into a smile, then she turned and went back into the villa.
In the Southern New York Villa District, a red sedan raced down the highway.
Several drivers who happened to pass by, shocked and ready to curse, were startled as a black blur, even faster than the first car, zoomed past them.
The black SUV sped along the road with Luo An calmly steering, his hands on the wheel, leaving other drivers' shock and anger behind him.
He had already notified the nearby patrolling NYPD officers, who were on their way.
Being a wealthy area, any disturbance would quickly draw a large number of NYPD.
Driving the new car, Millard Thompson watched the fast-passing lights outside the window, his heart pounding uncontrollably.
It was his first time driving this fast.
Fortunately, the area wasn't busy, otherwise, he felt he might have already crashed.
Seeing the black SUV that was initially following from behind but now getting closer, Millard Thompson's throat felt parched.
Eventually, the gap between the black SUV and the red sedan leveled off.
Millard Thompson saw this, thinking the SUV had reached its limit, he sighed in relief.
But a closer inspection in the rearview mirror revealed that Luo An, driving the SUV, was not only calm but also waved and smiled at Millard upon noticing him looking.
Seeing this, Millard Thompson's pupils shrank, and his hairs stood on end.
Before he could utter a word, police cars with jarring sirens suddenly appeared in the distance.
After confirming that the target was the red sedan, two officers jumped out of the police car and quickly laid out portable tire spikes on the ground.
"Shit!"
Seeing the spikes on the ground, Millard suddenly cursed, hastily slowed down, and turned the steering wheel to switch to the opposite lane.
At that moment, Luo An, driving calmly in the SUV, pulled out a Glock 18 with his left hand, aimed at the sedan, and pulled the trigger.
Bang bang bang bang bang—
What do you think?
