Chapter 244 244: The Real Culprit and the Truth
This time, everyone entered the church in a more gentle way, without kicking in doors or using bombs; a SWAT member simply pried the door open with a crowbar swiftly.
There was no choice; the federal religious atmosphere is very strong, even though Luo An is not religious, but there are still many believers among the SWAT members.
"FBI!"
"Federal agent!"
"Cover!"
"Speed! Speed!"
After the door was pried open, the SWAT members stormed into the church rapidly. Since there were no lights, everyone used the flashlights attached to their guns to quickly check every room in the church.
"Staircase clear!"
"Foyer clear!"
Luo An and Reesi followed closely behind and soon found a room behind the church where the priest lived.
With a kick, the door was flung open. Luo An ignored the twitching of Reesi's mouth corner, charged straight into the room, and quickly surveyed the situation.
But unfortunately, the room was empty.
A SWAT member came over:
"There's nobody in the entire church."
Luo An nodded and began to closely observe the bedroom.
The bedroom's occupant was very clean, with not a speck of dust on the edges and corners of the bookshelf.
Not only that, everything in the bedroom was also arranged very neatly; the documents on the table were perfectly stacked, and the clothes and pants in the wardrobe were folded precisely without any wrinkles.
Upon opening the refrigerator, the food was neatly arranged by category, impressing Reesi:
"The owner of this bedroom's OCD, is probably more severe than average."
"That's right."
Luo An nodded, then something caught his eye behind the bedroom closet. He moved the wardrobe forcefully, revealing a locked door.
The two exchanged glances. Reesi called a SWAT member to snip off the lock with pliers, and then Luo An and Reesi pushed the door open and walked in.
This hidden room was small and its setup very simple.
A crucifix hung on the wall, a red carpet on the floor, and there was a wooden chest in the corner of the room.
Upon opening the chest, inside was a spiked whip and a glass bottle, which contained a rod-like item uniquely male, cut off cleanly at the base with a knife.
"..."
Reesi's eyelids twitched as he closed the chest and turned to say:
"That couldn't be from the priest..."
"High probability."
Luo An's expression remained unchanged, and upon leaving the room, he noticed a notebook on the desk of the outer room. Just as he was about to open it, a SWAT member came over:
"Commander, we've found something on the lawn behind the church."
"Hmm?"
Luo An and Reesi quickly exited the room and followed the SWAT member to the edge of the lawn behind the church, by a patch of greenery.
At that moment, two SWAT members were busy, and the foul stench of a corpse was emanating from there.
"Call the crime scene analysis experts."
Luo An's face was expressionless as he examined the body, then turned and said:
"The clothes on this body are similar to Richard's clothes in a photo on the fridge at Erin's house."
"OK."
Reesi grasped the meaning of Luo An's words and immediately pulled out his phone to call the crime scene analysis team.
Luo An re-entered the bedroom and had just flipped open the notebook found earlier when his cell phone in his pocket rang again.
Pressing the answer key:
"Luo An."
"Yes, it's me, Mona."
In the office area of Investigation Team Five, Mona, looking at the data she had just found on her computer, said:
"I found in the records from the church that the Baptist Priest of the church you're investigating is named Terence Rob, 40 years old. A year ago, he was transferred to your church in New York after committing some 'errors.'
His biological brother is named Holden Robb, 41 years old, the owner of a small chemical plant and previously a member of the same club as Paul Blake and others.
According to his financial status, Holden Robb has done others wrong as well, but recently, Holden's chemical plant went bankrupt, and Holden committed suicide.
And Holden's poker friends include not only the four people with Paul, but also Richard Meyer."
"Very good, Mona."
Luo An nodded while flipping through his notebook; this could explain the cause of death of Paul Blake and others, but he had another question:
"Mona, what were the 'errors' that Terence Rob committed a year ago?"
"The specific details are not accessible. You know how it is, the church's records are all paper-based."
Mona on the other end of the phone line curled her lip, then typed a few keystrokes, saying:
"But I've looked into the case records associated with that church during the time Terence Rob was transferred.
The NYPD had raided a gay bar suspected of gambling, and afterwards, they investigated that church.
Even though I couldn't find the specifics of the NYPD investigation, I found a screenshot of a video from a surveillance camera diagonally across from that bar that shows someone who looks very much like Terence Rob."
"OK."
Luo An nodded; it seemed that the so-called 'errors' of Terence Rob might be his sexual orientation, which he had been hiding – a place like the church is, after all, known to be conservative.
However, Luo An thought the church was making too big a deal of it—what's wrong with being attracted to men? Didn't some priests in Europe used to like young boys?
Is it because Terence Rob prefers someone older?
The content in the notebook wasn't complex, mainly the requests and needs of the congregants coming to this church for worship; Luo An didn't find the psychological diary of Terence Rob he had imagined.
But Luo An did discover a vacant space in the position of the wardrobe, not too big and not too small, perfectly fitting a backpack.
Considering Terence Rob has to stake out in advance and commits crimes every five days, Luo An placed his phone to his ear once more:
"Mona, can you find out where Terence Rob is right now?"
"There's a suspected location."
Mona behind the phone typed a few more times and said:
"He used to play cards with his brother and a guy named Raymond Rakov.
But I didn't find any evidence that Raymond was involved in the chemical plant business of his brother, and Raymond has been abroad before and after the plant issues."
"Terence wouldn't be carefully investigating Raymond's specific role in the matter right now; he's already killed four people, his actions and methods becoming more skilled, which shows he's starting to enjoy this sense of controlling fates."
Luo An walked quickly out of the bedroom and said:
"Reesi, pretend to be a devout follower and call Terence Rob asking for help. The information I found in the notebook indicates he doesn't discriminate against female congregants.
Mona, when Reesi makes the call, you should be able to pinpoint his exact location, right?"
Although not often demonstrated, Reesi, who came from the intelligence service, is more than adept at assuming other roles.
Her explanation for this was practice makes perfect.
And she seemed so familiar with it.
So, when Luo An suggested it, Reesi immediately agreed without a second thought, and Mona stretched her arms forward, fingers cracking:
"Trust me, as long as Terence Rob answers the phone, I can find him!"
"Good."
Luo An left the church, got into the car with Reesi and several SWAT members:
"Once you locate him, send me the location immediately."
"No problem!"
Three minutes later, everything was ready; Reesi sat next to Mona, took a deep breath, and dialed Terence Rob's mobile number.
What do you think?
