Chapter 902: Get out [1/2]
While I felt annoyed that I couldn't do as I pleased, I relented. For one, the only reason my girls tried to stop me had little to do with trying to control me. Their actions stemmed from two things. Love and the desire to keep me safe.
How many people in the world wish to have what I have now? How many longed for someone in their lives to love and support them? Most of what we have in the entertainment industry plays on this longing. Whether it be movies, songs, or video games.
Changing my state of mind dissipated any negative emotions I had. In its place, all I had was gratitude. Both to the God who gave me the Sirens and to my harem who loved me. Without meaning to, my emotions spilled to their links.
I had not spoken. But they all expressed their happiness at my obedience, even the absent ones.
'Beloved, thank you. I know it goes against your nature, but I am grateful all the same.'
'You have my gratitude, Dearest. Inferior men would feel insulted by such a request.'
"You are the best, Possum; I mean it."
'Hehehe! Darling is number one in the whole wide world!'
'Now that's a man worth my everything! I love you, Mr. Code!'
'As expected of my Husband. Thank you.'
'Fufu, Shujin, how blessed am I to have such an understanding {Kindred}.'
In bliss, I replied in a brief manner, 'It is I who thank God every day for you all. I love you.'
"As impressive as that sounds, as that sounds. What does that mean for us, Juno?"
A commanding voice caused me to remember we were in a meeting. I rushed to identify the speaker. Zanele cut to the matter of the discussion. The Awakened could theoretically eliminate the malice from all the Reapers in Hellsgate. But it wasn't the first time.
At first, I believed it was something groundbreaking. But Zach's words convinced me otherwise.
"Look bastard. You are not the first one to find out that the Reborn in Hellsgate can absorb malice. There were people who figure that out way earlier. I didn't know the specifics, but they found a way to coexist with those monsters much like you do.
"But not everyone can do that. The first one to do so where the Asians. And for the longest time, I thought it was impossible for anyone else. And now you suddenly pull up all this out of your ass. Li Wu Di is going to blow a gasket."
Of course, the very first issue was that the Reborn and the Reapers had to speak the same language. But even then, the process was not so easy. The main problem with giving the malice to the Awakened or the Reborn in general was that it made them powerful.
Roach and Juno, before allying with me, were already dangerous. Roach almost killed the Sirens and me because of his unique ability. And he has evolved twice since then. While the way to detect Reapers and Reborn was different, the same standards applied.
If Roach's signature was like a small sailboat when we first met, now it was now an aircraft carrier. The bastard has increased in strength by a factor of a hundred, maybe even a thousand.
The only reason I never doubted his loyalty was that I had a gun to his head. Unlike normal people, the Sirens were the only ones who had my complete trust. While I gave them power, I also gave the Awakened a leash.
{Kill Switch} and {Call my Name} formed a single entity. You could not have one without the other. And while I kept that information a secret from Hellsend, I told Juno and Roach from the get-go. And both accepted.
'Exa, would there be a possibility that {Kill Switch} would not work?'
In a show I watched, a vampire hunter tried to control a vampire by planting a bomb on the back of his head. The vampire hunter's tech guy betrayed him, making the explosive useless. I didn't want such a thing to happen to me.
[No, my lord. That is not possible. The {fates} themselves said before that it would work on anything below a Revenant.]
'That is true, but can you ask them again? Back then, we never imagined I would be using it on monsters.'
[Okay, I will ask… They said that it does not matter. But they will tell you if an Awakened has reached the point that {Kill Switch} would no longer work.]
'I see, thank you, Exa, and thank the masters for me, too.'
[You are welcome, my lord. I will relay your gratitude to them as well.
I turned back to Zanele and waited for Juno's answer. Technically, the one who commands the Awakened was me. But I didn't want a subordinate who could not think for him- or herself.
Maybe it was because I was American. But I intended to adopt the US military's style in training officers. There were grunts. But, most military branches had schools for leadership. And in the organization, there were always officers in training.
From the most basic squad all the way up to the field commanders. The bigger the group, the more officers there would be. Romans operated in the same manner, which was why they had the Centurions. The alternative was horrible as it didn't scale well.
Communist armies were the best example of this. It sped up decisions by allowing one person to decide. But, if that person fell, your army would lose. In the U.S. military, trainers taught officers to think on their feet.
If someone takes out their superior, they should act on their own. The training paired this with a general goal called the commander's intent. Which was a fancy way of specifying an outcome. It was hard to understand without a clear example.
Say I owned a restaurant, for example. My officers were my servers, waiters, and cooks. They had their own roles. But we had one goal. This would be the commander's intent. For a restaurant, the commander's intent would be to serve customers good food.
If my cook suddenly died and I was not present. My team would find a way to serve food without a cook. Officers would do whatever it takes to get the desired result. They would order takeout, cook, or bring in a sub.
They should not execute actions that go against that outcome. Examples would be closing up the restaurant or hosting a wake for the cook. While both had reasons that may be justifiable. Doing either of those would cause the goal to remain unachieved.
While this flexibility introduced red tape and bureaucracy into everything. It allowed the command structure some flexibility. The Sirens in particular were religious in implementing this. They often scolded or directed the officers they chose to develop.
'Anyone would think that once they had fought together with Jas.'
Her systematic assassination of enemy commanders was her signature strategy. The results were exceptionally effective. Thus, the Sirens and I always operated so Hellsend could fight with or without us. That was our goal.
What do you think?
