Limitless The Strongest Revenant

Chapter 978: I am [1/2]

An unsteady atmosphere settled into the hut. The only sound being made was Aki's faint cries. The woman shivered as she curled deeper into my arms. Aki was my Japanese Onee-san. In terms of age, she was our second eldest. Yet right now she was pitiful like a child.

"Now," I reiterated.

Seeing any of my girls in emotional states felt terrible. I would much rather get shot by a .50 cal than see them cry. I was sure it was the protector in my blood; the tears of my harem simply equated themselves to my weakness. They cried because I was inadequate.

Zanele nodded and straightened up.

"As you might have already understood from the discussions, Successor. Your kind are unlike the rest of us. The Sins are your biggest indicator of this. A myriad of secrets I spent my entire life studying tells a tale of immense suffering and hardship."

"I am losing my patience, Zanele. Get to the point before I shoot you," I growled.

Despite my threat, Zanele did not back down.

"Successor, as I have seen your true nature, I implore you to listen. I cannot explain the Sin of Gluttony without telling you of her connection to the Successor."

"What the fuck are you even asking?!"

Zanele then raised her hands and used soul to create objects on them. On her left hand was a sphere that looked like the Earth. And on her right was the image of seven women all tied together on one gigantic stake.

Just seeing the images in her hands drove home the point more than a thousand words. I clenched my jaw as I forced myself to listen.

"As I said at the beginning. The Successors are heroes. They are given an immense burden no other reaper can bear. Yet despite so many of them being born. All of them died. But that is not what I want you to focus on; it is their relation to their Sins."

"…"

"Unlike the rest of the Successors I have met, only you cherish yours long after you have consummated your love. How you adore, praise, and love them is exactly the behavior I saw from all the ones who came before you. But that in itself is the problem."

"What do you mean, Zanele?"

"Successor, despite the legacy of knowledge delivered to you, you remain in the dark. This goes against and even disqualifies you from being a Successor. I will ask only once. The legacy of the Sins. You have already received it, have you not?"

I squirmed under Zanele's gaze. She was right. Like how she understood the Sins, it was impossible for this smart woman not to learn about the Successors.

"I may be ignorant in some things, but with regard to this topic, few know more than I do. And before you say that it is because of Blanche, I will tell you why she asked you to meet me. Blanche cannot see the futures of Successors."

"What? What do you mean? That can't be right; she correctly guessed my actions… she…"

"Think back to what she actually said, Successor. Blanche can see the futures of Sins and even Demons. That is how she knows. No matter how hard she tries, she will not be able to see anything you are a part of. She doesn't even know when you die, only that you do."

[But your journey here was set the moment Amari Soldat saved Envy and Lust. I couldn't change it no matter what I tried. So, all I can do is give you knowledge of the future. The futures of Successors are hard to see, so I do not know where he is. Only that he is there.]

"She does this by monitoring the people surrounding you. She learns of what happens to you via the futures of others. This is how special Successors are. They are something that not even time has dominion over," Zanele explained.

"Fine, I believe you. And yes, I have received the legacy. They appear as doors in my mind. I received them the first time I slept after I loaned the {Fates} of my girls. After we made love, the doors then manifested a picture of each Siren. It also happened after I slept."

"Why haven't you gone through them?"

"I… I thought it was too troublesome at that point. We had a lot of things going on."

Zanele nodded and then made a serious expression, "Successor. If you had to choose between your harem and everyone else, who would you pick?"

"That's easy. My harem," I said immediately.

The Soldat matriarch lowered her hands as she nodded, "That is what I expected. Then we do not have to continue." After she spoke, she tried to stand up.

"Wait! What do you mean?"

"I mean it as I have said, Successor. There is no further reason to discuss. You are not yet ready. You must go through the doors first. Only then can you have an answer."

{Things have finally begun to move. And now you are at the same starting point, John Smith. Everything you seek is through those doors. I await for your answer the next time we meet. Farewell. Buddy.}

Somehow, I heard {Rewind's} voice overlap with Zanele. I froze in place. Who wouldn't choose their family? Why did it sound like I was making a mistake?

Yet Zanele suddenly struggled to stand. A powerful pressure smashed into her back, forcing her down.

"Nelle, you don't get to talk that crap to my Possum. Spill the beans before I tear you a brand-new asshole."

"Ugk! Y-Yesh, Lady Rhiannon, please forgive me."

At her acceptance, the force that crushed Zanele to her knees disappeared. I thanked Robyn with a nod. She made a satisfied expression and smiled.

"Cough, cough. My apologies, Successor."

"I don't mind. Just explain quickly. I never said that I never intended to go through the doors. I plan to do so after Antarctica. Why are you making it seem that I have to abandon my harem in order to save the world?"

"That is because, from what I understand. You are not of sound mind," she replied.

"Huh?"

Zanele sat back upright and fixed her clothes. Olamide gave her a cup of water, which she drank. After finishing it, she continued her story.

"After Omar, I began to think about what the Successors were and what the Sins were for. I ruminated on it for a long time and was able to verify my guesses by the fourth and fifth successors that came along. I no longer met them but instead watched from the shadows."

"My guesses were quite simple. The system used by the Sins and Successors had an goal. And it is of the utmost importance. That is why, despite the many failures, it repeats. The Successors are like seeds that must fully develop before they can be used.

"Just like plants, they need air, water, and sunlight. These are the Sins, the curse of affection, and the legacy. This process aims to prepare the Successor to fulfill his destiny."

The analogy was easy to understand. So, I was some sort of plant that the world needed. The Sins and the Legacy were what made me grow. But what was the curse of affection that this woman mentioned?

"Before I continue, I would like to say that what comes next is strictly my own thoughts about the subject. Please remember that, as you might not like what you hear. But know that I did not come up with these things by chance; I did so after years of research."

"That is fine," I replied curtly.

"Okay, as you have guessed, the Successor and Sins are the big components. Whatever this entire thing is trying to do comes down to this group of eight. The Legacy is what I call the thing that the Sins deliver. I am sure everyone has wondered one question. Why?

"Why go through all this? And the only answer I could derive was that someone needed the Successors to learn something. So they used the Sins. They are kind of like a USB in the form of a person. As the legacy is too large, it must be delivered to the Successor in pieces."
