Limitless The Strongest Revenant

Chapter 985: The only thing [2/2]

We then heard the splash of a body falling to the wet ground with a loud thud. Hiro swung his blade and walked away in silence. Only the echoes of falling rain and the clack of Hiro's boots remained as the recording ended.

___

The recording was barely over ten minutes long. But it gave us an immense glimpse into the struggles of Abel and Hiro. Two former Successors who fought for what they believe in. They gave plenty of clues, but at the same time raised many questions.

Although the meeting ended with one of them dead, it was clear how much they respected each other. I couldn't imagine how hard it was for them to come after each other's lives. But I grew curious about their words as Hiro made a decision while Abel could not.

"As you have heard, the clip is a gold mine of information. In case you are wondering. We cannot find any records of the Successors Abel or Hiro. We have made guesses from their accents and names, but this recording preceded even my birth. Their story has been lost.

"Now, I will begin with what IRIS already knew before I came into the picture. First, IRIS learned of the term Successor from this clip. We have found nothing else about what or who they are succeeding. Only that they have a burden and must make a choice."

Indeed, anyone who listened in would find context from the words used. But even those had their limitations. Like how Hiro chose the first option. Unfortunately, we could not determine how many options were available. So, that hardly helped.

"We know only a few things, but they are quite important. Among them is the choice between the world and something. Only that it seems to be a choice borne of sacrifice. As shown by Hiro's explanations of why he didn't join the Sins Lust and Gluttony.

"Next, only the last Successor can do the task. We do not know why that is or why the Successors cannot work together. As shown by this clip, despite Abel and Hiro sharing a fondness for each other. Neither choose compromise nor showed mercy, only death."

No one raised any objections. Zanele's words matched what everyone would have understood from the recording. What came next was the important part.

"Now we tie everything together. The Sins deliver legacies to the Successors and the last two, Lust and Gluttony, are special. From Abel's words, he would have followed them if he were a little more selfish. Are we all still on the same page at this point?"

I looked around, and the girls were all nodding.

"Okay, now I will give a brief summary of our findings, and you may ask Nandi and Zinhle for any specifics. No Successor has ever shared their mission. So, we must guess it based on those who interacted with them. It is in this manner that we learned what we know.

"Nandi and Zinhle were watching their Successors before they met their first Sins. They did not get intimate with either and only served as friends and advisers. Using their familiarity, I had them gauge each Successor's change after each legacy."

When I heard Zanele's manner of investigation, I grew impressed. It was thorough and well thought out. Knowing the Successors beforehand let them record and use the changes as a reference for future successors.

Zanele took a sip of water before she continued.

"The Successors are chosen to complete a series of tasks. However, the tasks they know of differ by legacy. We learned that legacies were a lesson plan. It taught the Successor what he needed to know before making the 'Choice.'"

{Things have finally begun to move. And now you are at the same starting point, John Smith. Everything you seek is through those doors. I await for your answer the next time we meet. Farewell. Buddy.}

Again, Zanele hit the nail on the head. Despite only telling her about the doors, she had almost everything else figured out. I am certain that what she spoke of next would be the critical pieces of this puzzle.

Actually, Zanele's earlier mention of me as a fake Successor made {Rewind}'s words clearer.

'Now you are at the same starting point. The fucking bastard knew I was a fake.'

From that one line, I then thought of a theory. {Rewind} was part of all this. He was linked to the other lives I had seen in some way. I originally thought they were my lives because of {Rewind Ultimatum: Relive}, but now I am no longer so sure.

If I weren't the only one to see them, then it means they are not my memories but rather someone else's. Of course, I could be just as wrong, and it turns out these memories are mine. I don't actually know what they mean yet.

Exa said that none of the Successors had memories of the same mythologies. So the things they saw might be different. But if that was the case, why was the outcome always the same? Could it be that the multiple mythologies ended up having the same life?

"Now, the important part."

The melodious voice of the Soldat matriarch woke me from my musings. I listened eagerly for her next words. These would be something that might aid me as I claimed my legacy.

"The Successors had different instructions for their men per the legacy they claimed. After the legacy of Pride, they all were confused. There was no instruction, only that the Successors were all lost deep in thought. They all eventually bounced back at this point.

"However, there was a noticeable difference. Before meeting the Sin of Pride, every Successor was like Limitless. They wished to dive to the deepest Hellsgate to close it. Yet, once they do meet the Sin of Pride, they suddenly changed objectives."

"They suddenly stopped? Whatever for?" Liv questioned.

"We do not know, no one knew why. There have been many theories, but ultimately no one knows. But it seemed curious that all the Successors reacted in the same manner. Thus we guess the legacy of Pride was about that. Of course, none of the Sins also said anything before they died."

I see. They knew the Successor and what he was. So, they knew what changed in his outlook and behavior. This made it easier to narrow down the focus of the legacy. Smart.

"The next ones are a bit trickier. After meeting the Sin of Greed, they would suddenly frantically search for 'keys'. Be it anything related to mythology or legends. They would ask for anything related to keys."

"Did any of them say what the 'key' was for? Maybe what it looked like?" Lilly asked.

"No, they did not. That's why it gets confusing. After meeting the Sin of Greed, the Successors would devote all resources to search for the 'Keys.' But this does not last. Afterward, they met the Sins of Wrath and received the 3rd legacy. Then, they changed directions to hunt 'Apostates' instead," Zanele explained.

"Strewth! What the fuck are Apostates? Do the fucking keys no longer matter?" my kitten yelled in anger.

"I do not know Lady Rhiannon. Taken literally, Apostates are those who renounce their faith. But as we have no context, or rather, the Successors refuse to say anything other than the term, there is not much to go on."

"How fucking convenient! Useless fucksticks!"

As almost everyone felt the same way, no one berated Robyn. But Zanele didn't stop there. She continued to share the actions of the previous Successors. I could only hope that I got something useful from listening to all this.
