Chapter 994 994: And why is that? [1/2]
'Liv, my love, are you alright?' I worried.
My Northerner bit her lip and looked down. As Zanele and her people were not aware of our conversation, I didn't turn to face my Valkyrie. As she didn't reply, she must have been composing her thoughts. Willing to give her a few moments, I didn't press her.
"To put it bluntly, Lady Bella, we do not know. As you have a Northerner among your ranks, you should be aware of the situation. Unknown to the world, Antarctica is covered with Reborn. Every day, they try to venture out.
"The isolated nature of Antarctica protects the world from their invasions. The Reborn do not have fliers strong enough to venture to the other continents. Thus, they simply murder one another in a land of violence and destruction. Sadly, this also stops us from entering."
At Zanele's reply, I nodded my head. Exa has been updating me on the investigations and recon Hellsend has done in Antarctica. It really is a mess.
"I find it hard to believe that with the satellites available to humans, you couldn't follow them. Aren't you all just lazy?" Jo retorted.
"I have no excuses. The Satellites were created to monitor Antarctica. But due to the nature of the Successors, we couldn't find them. It is like trying to use a GoPro to find a single ant in an ant colony without crouching down. The technology we have still isn't good enough.
"While there are signs of conflict, they move too fast and too erratically to follow. This is not even counting the chaos that the Reborn themselves make. They provide the perfect camouflage to lose the Successors in. Even when we sent teams, they never returned."
The explanations drove home how different the worlds of humans and Reapers were. It was believed that Antarctica had nothing. Until now, the vast majority had believed this lie. But conspiracy theorists have long disagreed.
'If only they knew. The ones that might end the Earth hide in the uninhabited continent, not in outer space.'
I looked at the recon video that Hellsend has been taking of Antarctica. They were using various civilian and military satellites to check the situation. This was why I believed Zanele's words. Quite frankly, the situation looked like hell.
The polar icecaps were not breaking because of global warming. They were shattering because of the battles occurring there. Global warming as a whole was also a ruse. The carbon emissions were not actually due to the cars and planes as most believe.
It was due to the stuff that pumps out of Antarctica on a daily basis. The mere presence of the reborn there raises the sea level and heats up the world. Put simply, the end is coming.
Yet as the humans couldn't do anything about the Reaper problem, they just tried to control the humans. But it had its limits. Even with all the push to go green, Antarctica just makes the situation worse and worse. In fact, the effects have already become too hard to hide.
'Sigh. If humans learned of what we know now, they would probably go insane,' I complained.
'Who wouldn't? If they knew that what they believe to be natural disasters were all caused by the Reborn and Reapers fighting, no one would feel safe,' Lilly commented.
Earthquakes that came from Reborn trying to invade using the seafloor. Tsunamis from monsters that tried to ride the waves. Fires from the aftermath of battles above the stratosphere.
The governments blamed every disaster on the fury of Mother Nature. It was, in fact, Reapers in combat.
Zanele then gazed at Liv as she paused, "It was truly unexpected. For a Northerner to become a Sin. It was almost impossible for them to appear on the other battlefronts. Leaving the continent was just too difficult. They used Hellsgate as the bridge to do so. Often as Rogues."
I see. As the land above was too chaotic, they used the single-digit floors of Hellsgate. Even Krishna did the same tactic to migrate a large number of his people. The Northerners would then become Rogues or beg for amnesty to join another battlefront.
"There was only one way to leave the North without being a Rogue. To join an enlistment of another battlefront. It really is amazing. That Lady Liv, a potential Sin of Pride, met the Successor on his first night. It's like the stars lined up to forge a path for you two."
Zanele's praise caused the rest of the Sirens to agree. It was truly a miracle. But while that explained how Liv got to the enlistment, how did she get with the Sirens? As I was thinking about it, my Japanese lover began supplying the details I did not know.
'Anata, the Northern Kingdom considers leaving the battlefront desertion. The ones who manage to live outside the North are criminals who got lucky. The vast majority die along the way. Even if they survive, they are under Soul Oaths to never speak of the fate of their land.'
'Hmm. And as they are Keepers, they will get weaker the moment they break this vow. So none of them do, even in death. Is that correct, Kamisan?'
'Yes, Anata. It is also why few know of the real situation. It's something you have to see with your own eyes to believe. I wasn't present when they picked up Liv, so I will leave that to the others.'
'Oh! Oh! I know, Darling! Lilly told me! She flew to Australia to pick up Robyn and then entered the Australian battlefront as a guest. Robyn and Lilly then camped outside the single-digit floors, waiting for her.'
'Liv took ages; I honestly thought she wasn't gonna rock up. I practically scoffed a whole bag of lollies outta boredom.' Robyn added.
'Thank you, everyone. I am honestly surprised that you managed to find her. Lilly, how did you even know which floor she would be using?'
'It was quite easy. I just based it on the personalities of the Chasers guarding the floors. Australia only has 22 active floors. The most aggressive of them butchered any Rogue who tried to enter from the North or Asia. Liv was weak, so she had very few options.'
'But hearing the tales of the Sins and the Successor only reinforces my belief that we are all fated. Husband, each of us here came forward to deliver our legacies to you. Yet somehow, we all defied the destiny of dying. It can only mean one thing.'
Just then, I heard the noble and affectionate voice of my Northerner.
'The Sirens are different. We are not Sins. Our purpose is not just to deliver these legacies and die. We exist to help you win the bouts, Beloved. Jas is right. I see that now. It seems even the {Heart of the North} plays a role in all this.'
'Liv, are you okay now?'
'I am. I also see the threads of fate come together. My purpose is to fall in love and find you, Beloved. And together with the Sirens, we will bring salvation to my homeland. Destiny truly works in mysterious ways. There is nothing to be scared of; it was all fated.'
All of a sudden, a fierce flame began to burn from Liv's link. It was hot, passionate, and overbearing. I could only describe it as conviction or resolve.
'Beloved, my precious sisters. Even as I was banished, my Father didn't require me to remain silent about the state of the North. Our greatest secret and lifeline, I am willing to share it with all of you. Should I do so with Zanele present or not?'
What do you think?
