Chapter 544 - 541 What a Joke?

Underwater, bubbles continuously rose to the surface.

The seafloor was pitch black; the light from the flashlight could penetrate less than 6 meters in the water, and it was terrifyingly silent, without any sound.

No wind, no water sounds, nothing existed except the sound of one’s own heartbeat.

Bi Fang clenched his teeth on the breathing valve, elevating his perception to the highest level, extending it to fifteen meters. The Niu Gangjue loomed within the circular domain, their presence occasionally flashing within ten meters, causing Bi Fang to break into a cold sweat each time.

Every time Bi Fang tried to pull Mandy to the surface, the Niu Gangjue would attack, slamming Bi Fang and Mandy back toward the seabed.

It was an extremely fierce but cunning hunter.

Bi Fang slowly exhaled and leaned back against the rock wall, silently undoing the flashlights above his and Mandy’s heads.

He cut open the fishing net used for the camera equipment and tied it to himself and Mandy to secure their position. Then he dismantled the oxygen tanks on their backs, took a deep breath of oxygen, tightened the tanks’ valves, and wound the two flashlights together, tying them onto the oxygen tank with the breathing tube.

His heart thumped wildly.

Bi Fang’s body temperature rose quickly; he no longer felt the chill of the seawater.

Holding his breath, he made sure the flashlights were securely fixed before slowly turning the valve open.

Slowly stepping on the rock wall, Bi Fang used the leverage to climb up bit by bit. Seeing him attempting to escape, the Niu Gangjue predictably launched another charge.

Bi Fang, who had been waiting for just this moment, suddenly yanked the valve open and kicked off the wall, ascending with Mandy!

Stones were dislodged from the wall, and the fragile sandstone was shattered into pieces by the impact of the Niu Gangjue, stirring up clouds of sand in the water.

In the midst of the turbidity, the oxygen tank with its open valve rapidly expelled a stream of air, carrying the glowing flashlights, creating a white trail deep in the ocean that rapidly shot away into the distance.

Even more incredibly, the moment the flashlights flew out, the Niu Gangjue also turned and charged toward the direction of the flashlights!

Without a doubt, this was the perfect opportunity to escape!

Bi Fang, holding onto Mandy, took full advantage of the Niu Gangjue’s pursuit of the flashlights to ascend with all his might.

A minute later, when the lighthouse beam swept over Dolphin Bay again, Bi Fang burst out of the water, his powerful arms splitting the waves as he swam toward the shore.

Keke on the shore noticed the commotion and quickly swam towards Bi Fang. The two met in the water.

Keke was shocked at Mandy’s unconsciousness, "What happened?"

Bi Fang spat out a mouthful of seawater, breathing heavily, his voice hoarse, "Get to shore first."

With one more person helping, Bi Fang felt much lighter as they both dragged Mandy towards the shore.

Only when he could feel the sand and rocks under his feet did Bi Fang truly breathe a sigh of relief and collapsed face up on the sandy ground, coughing violently.

He had gulped down quite a bit of water when he was hit by the Niu Gangjue underwater.

Mandy, dragged by Keke, left a long trail in the sand.

Keke opened Mandy’s wetsuit and began performing CPR.

Being skilled divers, Keke knew all too well how to deal with drowning. With Bi Fang’s help, it took less than half a minute for Mandy to expel a large amount of seawater from his mouth and nose and finally regain consciousness with a jolt.

Mandy sat up suddenly, spat out a mouthful of seawater, and began coughing frantically.

Keke slumped down on the beach and looked towards Bi Fang, asking with difficulty, "What the hell happened?"

Mandy, after coughing for a long time, finally regained his senses. He looked around in confusion, feeling a sharp pain in his forehead, and suddenly remembered the last thing before he lost consciousness. A ghastly face rushed out of the darkness towards him, and the next moment, Mandy could no longer remember anything.

Bi Fang sat up from the ground, took a long breath, and said, "A Niu Gangjue."

"A Niu Gangjue?"

Mandy and Keke both startled momentarily.

The former matched the image of the Niu Gangjue to the ghostly face in his memory and suddenly realized, reaching out to touch his forehead. Pain made him quickly retract his fingers.

"Damn, it was a Niu Gangjue! No wonder my head hurts so much!"

If Mandy knew what an Antarctic Immortal was, he would have found a striking resemblance between himself and the creature at that moment.

The Niu Gangjue was not a rare fish. On the contrary, those familiar with diving and sea fishing knew it very well.

It is too powerful, immensely strong and ferociously aggressive, often attacking fish that were nearly reeled in.

Keke himself had once experienced this; he was about to land a Snapper when suddenly a huge Niu Gangjue rushed out, swallowed the Snapper whole, giving him a fright and nearly falling into the sea.

Daring to snatch the prey of humans showed the viciousness of the Niu Gangjue.

Because of its immense power, flexibility, and very fast swimming speed, along with formidable fighting capability, the Niu Gangjue was known as the bull of the seas.

Catching a Niu Gangjue was a huge honor and gave a sense of great achievement.

Thus, within the Sea Fishing Realm, the Niu Gangjue’s reputation soared, becoming the ultimate target for sea fishermen, fueling an inner desire of fishermen to conquer that massive, powerful beast.

However, few were successful, while many were dragged underwater.

It was the same in the diving community; encountering a Niu Gangjue, many divers were sometimes more scared than they would be upon seeing a shark.

Keke hurriedly asked, "So what about it now? Is it dead or what? And your oxygen tank?"

Bi Fang shook his head. Underwater, he was hindered by carrying Mandy and the fight could last an unpredictable length of time—a prolonged struggle could easily be dangerous for Mandy.

At that time, the depth had already surpassed thirty meters, and anyone who frequently dived would know that there’s a critical point for natural buoyancy in diving, which lies between thirty and forty meters underwater.

Affected by the pressure, at depths of 30-40 meters, one no longer needs to swim, as the body’s density becomes so high that it allows for natural sinking, and then one enters the "free fall stage".

This is also the most marvelous stage of diving, where you don’t have to do anything and just let yourself be pushed deeper into the ocean.

But the situation at that time was far from marvelous for Mandy; instead, it was extremely lethal.

Once Bi Fang let go, the poor guy would naturally sink to the bottom. Already drowning, no one could guarantee what would happen next. If he and Niu Gangjue were entangled for too long, the guy might not make it.

Drowning and suffocation are completely different.

The relative time to death would be very quick, usually around 2-3 minutes.

In a short time, a large amount of water would enter the lungs and stomach.

Pulmonary edema, severe dilution of blood and tissue fluid, lack of oxygen exchange in the body, and the heavy burden on the heart would all lead to various concurrent symptoms and a painful death by drowning.

This meant that Bi Fang had less than two minutes to act.

He was unable to fight, and he couldn’t afford to fight.

So, in his urgency, Bi Fang resorted to a diversion tactic. It was impossible to throw something far in the water, so he tied a flashlight to his breathing tube and then opened the air valve of the oxygen cylinder, using the air pressure to drive the flashlight and create the effect of a moving column of light on the seabed.

It wasn’t a panacea, the trick’s effectiveness depended on the fish in question.

Using it on another species might not produce the same effect, or it could be completely useless.

Mandy and Keke exchanged puzzled looks, clearly not understanding.

Bi Fang stood up and explained, "Niu Gangjue have a particular taste for fish from the Parrotfish family’s Snapper genus. As the predators one level up in the food chain, the Snapper genus fish are attracted to light and highly phototactic."

"Niu Gangjue usually hunt at night, primarily because the creatures one level below in their preferred food chain are attracted to light, so they gather under light to hunt."

"Perhaps Niu Gangjue initially attacked Mandy because it saw the column of light, mistook it for a Snapper, and only realized its mistake upon collision."

Listening, Mandy looked speechless. So, it was all just her bad luck?

The moving flashlight conveyed a certain level of misinformation to Niu Gangjue, leading them to believe that delicious Snapper genus fish might be there.

Given the prospect of tastier food, naturally, Niu Gangjue would stop attacking Bi Fang and choose the easier prey.

This was like Bi Fang hunting in the jungle, after several days without a meal, finally finding animal tracks, only to discover they belonged to a wolf.

Well, a wolf is a wolf, not inedible — though tough and gamey and quite dangerous, it’s not impossible to eat.

But if you were intent on wolf hunting and suddenly a lame pheasant happened to cross your path, even a fool driven by basic instincts would abandon wolf meat for the tastier, more easily acquired pheasant.

Mandy and Keke suddenly comprehended, their eyes filled with amazement as they looked at Bi Fang.

In less than two minutes from the incident to reaching shore, while any normal person would be terrified into idiocy, Bi Fang managed to find a solution based on the attacker’s dietary preference.

Is this even the work of a human?

Bi Fang took off the upper part of his wetsuit and noticed his right upper arm had swelled a bit and the color was darker, obviously bruised from the collision.

Mandy and Keke were silent for a moment. Although they were shocked and found it outrageous, considering it was Bi Fang, it seemed normal.

The only question was...

"So what now? What do we do? Will Niu Gangjue still be down there?"

The two asked.

It was just before eleven, and most of the mission was still incomplete. What were they to do next?

Niu Gangjue meat wasn’t tasty, being coarse and fishy, usually used for animal feed. Keke was purely after the thrill of capturing a powerful fish.

The more so it was, the more it proved the terror of Niu Gangjue.

"Simple," Bi Fang zipped up his wetsuit again, "we just butcher it."

"Butcher... butcher it?"

The expressions on their faces were quite a sight.

Bi Fang picked up a spare oxygen cylinder lying nearby, then dashed into the woods, and pulled out a wooden spear.

The harpoon, coated with an anti-corrosion metal layer, was not afraid of seawater, but Hundred-refined Steel was not, which is why Bi Fang was initially reluctant to bring it into the water.

In sea fishing, the harpoon is the real deal.

Using the same setup, Bi Fang secured the harpoon onto the wooden spear. Under Mandy and Keke’s watchful eyes, he once again jumped into the sea and headed towards the depths.

"Wait, he didn’t take a flashlight!" Keke exclaimed.

Mandy just twitched her mouth, looking up at the bright moon in the sky.

"I think, he might not need it."

"What a joke."

"Yeah, what a joke."
