Chapter 239 The Cult ( 9 )
It was about five hours past midnight, the darkness of the night already being defeated by the dim early morning glow as a bright morning drew closer.
Thanks to the availability of light, Winterseed soldiers could now see clearly and fight better against the endless hordes charging out of the woods.
Not so far away from the chaotic battlefield, a group of more than fifty soldiers could be seen on the ground, winching in pain as they went through the process of evolution for the first time.
A dozen evolved Winterseed soldiers stood guard over them, they fought constantly against the monsters trying to devour the defenseless, evolving soldiers.
"Why are theirs taking longer than hours? Some of them have been here for over two hours and they are still not done," one of the soldiers on guard shared his thoughts with his colleagues.
"I thought I was the only one worried about this," another soldier commented.
"I do not understand either, mine lasted for only about thirty minutes, yet most of them have been here for hours with still no response," a third soldier said.
"This is strange," another remarked.
"My cousin is amongst them—I hope nothing bad happens to him, for he is the only son of his parents," one soldier lamented.
They chatted amongst themselves while battling the few monsters that filtered through the intense battlefield and charged in their direction. Continue your saga on My Virtual Library Empire
"Only Lord Rowan could explain what is going on right now, but this stupid battle is taking way too long," one of them said, worry dripping from his voice.
"There are a lot of things that need explaining, including the hordes and the strange high-pitched noise we heard earlier," another responded.
"For real, everything happening today has been nothing but a nightmare. Something is very wrong somewhere, and I'm certain Lord Rowan is aware," yet another said.
"Yes, the captains might be aware as well, we should ask them when all this is over," another remarked.
"Are you sure this will end? More than four hours have passed, and more monsters are still pouring out. If we hadn't evolved, we would have died due to exhaustion before the monsters even killed us," someone exclaimed.
"I agree with you, the monsters we've faced in the past four hours outnumber those we encountered in five raids combined, and yet more continue to pour out. At this point, there seems to be no end!" a soldier asserted.
"I pray we survive, I'm still a virgin, and I just bagged myself a beautiful girlfriend—we still haven't done it yet," another soldier remarked.
The soldiers discussed amongst themselves.
Their concerns were shared by everyone participating in this battle at the moment, including Rowan.
Yet they continued fighting—if they gave up, they would be consumed by these hungry, rageful monsters.
Unlike the soldiers who had grown exhausted from the never-ending hordes of monsters, Blaze was different.
On the far left flank of the battlefield, Blaze could be seen engaged in intense combat against a group of E-rank high-level demonic wolves. The wolves seemed to be targeting Blaze in particular, they formed a large circle around him and attacked without mercy.
HOWL!
Blaze let out a furious cry as he stabbed the eyes of the nearest demonic wolf with his razor-sharp claws. The demonic wolf emitted a sharp cry of pain.
HOWL! HOWL!
The other wolves attacked Blaze to rescue their colleague.
FLAME SYNCHRONISATION
Blaze activated his skill, he created a wall of flame around him, preventing the wolves from closing in while he continued plunging his claws into the wolf in his grasp.
The howls of the other wolves grew more furious and vengeful, sadly, they were helpless.
After Blaze's last breakthrough, his flame synchronisation skill had grown stronger. The heat alone was a major threat to the wolves, who feared their fur might catch on fire.
Using this advantage, Blaze shielded himself with the wall of flame.
After a few more stabs, the demonic wolf within the wall of flame with him succumbed.
Blaze, not wasting a second, plunged his hand into the skull of the demonic beast and extracted its monster core.
Blaze stared at the monster core for a few seconds before consuming it.
His sleek grey fur glowed for a brief second as he absorbed the mana stored within the monster cores, rejuvenating his mana reserves.
The flame wall around him burned brighter and stronger following this.
Blaze grinned coldly and dismissed the flame walls right away.
HOWL!
The demonic wolves charged furiously at him instantly.
But Blaze was ready this time.
FIRE DISK!
FIREBALL!
With his mana recovered, he unleashed his attacks on the wolves without stopping, taking down a large number of them in seconds.
[ Number of currently evolving soldiers - 59 ] [ Successfully evolved - 0 ]
Rowan stared at the panel that had been up for a few hours now.
The panel first appeared when the first soldier started evolving, and then it began increasing as other soldiers joined.
The panel appeared among many other notification windows, and thus Rowan hadn't noticed them on time.
He only noticed it about two hours ago, as the rate of notifications popping up had decreased while the soldiers grew tired and weaker.
Nevertheless, Rowan was pretty confused.
The number of evolving soldiers kept increasing, yet none of them were able to actually evolve, which became a matter of concern.
Unfortunately, Rowan had his hands full at the moment and couldn't leave the battlefield to check on his soldiers. He could only pray in his mind that they would survive and evolve.
[ Your pet BLACK DRIFTER, slayed X1 INFERNO EAGLE ]
[ Your pet BLACK DRIFTER, slayed X1 Low-level DARK PHEONIX ]
Two notifications popped up right before him.
"Hmm, Black Drifter, how is your fight going over there?" he communicated telepathically with his pet.
Since he couldn't fly or observe the fight, he could only ask for reports from Black Drifter.
[ Only one inferno eagle and one two-headed Ice-fire eagle remaining amongst the flying ones. The others are still in the thousands. ]
Black Drifter gave a clear report.
Rowan responded, instructing it to keep fighting.
However, he was very worried after hearing the report.
"Lord Rowan, I can't move my hands anymore!"
"I am tired!"
"I am going to die!"
"When is this going to stop!"
"I haven't eaten, my chest feels like it's going to explode soon!"
The complaints of the soldiers alerted Rowan every time, he could tell just how exhausted they were from the way they fought.
Even the evolved soldiers like Winston and the others, including the captains, had grown tired and weak as well.
At this rate, they wouldn't be able to survive the next ten minutes without collapsing!
What do you think?
