Chapter 81: The Melting Corpse
“`
It’s been two days, and the police station remains a scene bustling and noisy, confined to just the first-floor lobby though.
Tang Qi arrived on the second floor to the small group office area, amidst the awe-filled glances from other police officers. Upon entering, he noticed some changes—the occupied office space had expanded, seemingly on a trend to encompass the entire second floor.
And the number of people seemed to have increased, mainly staff appearing to handle paperwork.
The most exaggerated change was with Nathan and Havier—only a few days ago they looked like normal detectives, but now they were fully armed, looking less like police officers and more like soldiers about to go into battle, specifically, those from a well-equipped special forces unit.
Compared to this, the newly added professional office equipment seemed much less conspicuous.
As Tang Qi entered, Stanna came over with a document, evidently noticing the puzzled look on Tang Qi’s face, and handed him the document while explaining.
“Due to solving the Evil Spirit and Ice Corpse Case, our group’s special privileges within the police station have once again increased. The Chief has authorized us to mobilize nearly all police station resources, and even equipped us with a special unit, outfitted to military standards, led by Nathan and Havier. Before becoming detectives, they were indeed members of the special forces. Gideon and Reine are responsible for logistics support, and a part of the team manages the case files…”
“It sounds very professional.”
While flipping through the document, Tang Qi commented.
At the same time, he silently marveled at the chief’s tactics, who had maximized benefits in such a short time. It may seem that she had suddenly granted the team many special privileges and provided a special forces team for support, the perfect superior.
But all this followed after Tang Qi and Stanna successfully handled two Transcendent cases.
That meant the group could indeed resolve incidents involving Extraordinary Powers.
Realizing this, the Chief quickly granted the maximum privileges, although internally within the police station, it was well known that the credit belonged to Tang Qi and Stanna.
But the Chief’s reports surely wouldn’t portray it that way, deliberately blurring their roles and attributing the achievements to “the group she had established.”
At the brink of the Spiritual Tide Return, Abnormalities are surfacing with an unimaginable frequency.
This frequency wouldn’t just affect Messer City.
Other cities in the Federation are experiencing the same.
Actually, not just the Divine Eagle Federation, but the entire Origin Blue Star, in other countries and alliances, will all descend into chaos in the near future. There might not be catastrophic dangers, but the official response to these Abnormalities will certainly reach a critical point.
Forces like churches and militaries, capable of countering these Abnormalities, will undoubtedly give priority to premier metropolises such as the Holy Eagle’s Nest and Jiatai City.@@novelbin@@
Other cities can only fend for themselves.
At such times, the exemplary performance of Messer City will stand out even more.
By then, it is inevitable for that female Chief to be promoted and amass wealth.
At this thought, a slight curve formed on Tang Qi’s lips. He wasn’t the only one who could benefit from this situation. Mundane power and wealth held little allure for the current Tang Qi. It was the Extraordinary Power that was the reason Tang Qi held the position of Police Station Consultant.
Because of that contract, Tang Qi could rightfuly claim benefits, and any potential “traps,” like mistaken editions of magic books, numbered treasure maps, all without exception, were dumped to the police station by Tang Qi.
In the process, Tang Qi didn’t even need to lift a finger—perfect.
With these thoughts, Tang Qi closed the file.
Despite the addition of many hands, it seemed that the group could still only handle one Abnormality case at a time. Last time, it was Tang Qi’s decision to tackle the Ice Corpse Case; this time, it was his turn to deal with the case he had previously postponed, the vampiric case in Central District.
There was no further delaying, as there had been another death.
The file in his hands was the latest information on the dead, but since the incident occurred just last night, he hadn’t yet had the chance to see the crime scene photos.
“Let’s take a look at the body first, losing all one’s blood doesn’t necessarily mean an Abnormality case, it could just as well be a particularly twisted Serial Killer.”

…
When the two saw the body in front of them in Reine’s lab, Tang Qi couldn’t help but take back his previous words.
“Surely, humans couldn’t have created this scene.”
Reine’s voice trembled slightly as she spoke.
She was a particularly brave coroner, indeed, but facing the sight before her, she couldn’t suppress the fear rising in her heart.
The already chilly lab seemed as if it was about to be frozen stiff by the atmosphere of horror.
Lying on the autopsy table was a body, an incredibly “abnormal” body.
It was… a sphere, a sphere of flesh.
His original appearance was utterly indiscernible, guess he was a middle-aged man by his face. His limbs were completely retracted together, nearly fused into his torso, his skin slack, resembling a withered ball of flesh, with many areas seeming to be stained with something, beginning to wax over.
In the center was a face, with a mouth, the two eyeballs had vanished without a trace, and the similarly waxen face had a thumb-sized hole at the top of the skull. Upon closer inspection, one could see the inner wall of the skull, which was hollow.
The brain pulp had taken flight.
The entire scene was both ludicrous and disgusting, ultimately blending together to form an unspeakable horror.
Reine had two forensic assistants, a man and a woman, both high achievers in forensic medicine, who were probably used to handling bodies with surgical knives.
But now, both were vomiting in the washroom.
Tang Qi did not ask about the previous victims’ manners of death, as he didn’t need to ask to know the answer.
If they had all started with this manner of death, especially since it all happened in Central District, this case would definitely take priority over others.
Was this a special case before his eyes?
Or was it the beginning?
Tang Qi slightly lowered his eyelids, his gaze fixed on the body before him, quietly waiting for something. A second later, a faint ghost light suddenly appeared, slowly forming a special image.
[Curios: Abnormal Corpse.]
[Information Fragment: Food leftover by a certain demon, a powerful Secret Alchemist may find some useful materials inside.]
“I am a Secret Alchemist, but I don’t plan to look for any materials in there.”
Tang Qi said silently as he watched an Information Fragment flow by.
Even he found the ball of flesh before him quite revolting, especially after a while when it started to release a sour, putrid odor, which became increasingly intense. The two assistants who had just come out of the washroom hurried back in to vomit upon smelling it.
Tang Qi looked up, together with Stanna and Reine, and they all witnessed the scene of the flesh ball slowly dissolving.
Starting from that withered face, it slowly melted piece by piece, eventually turning into an extremely nauseating, thick yellow pus.
The entire lab seemed to have suffered an attack from a biological weapon, and even Reine couldn’t hold on any longer. After getting Tang Qi’s permission, she quickly grabbed a liquid nitrogen fire extinguisher and furiously sprayed it at the puddle of pus.
“It seems we need to make a trip to the crime scene in Central Park.”
“By the way, have Nathan and Havier prepare weapons, the heavy kind.”
Tang Qi said, covering his mouth and nose, his voice somewhat grave.
