Chapter 87: Chapter 87 Black Snake Witch High Priest
Upon hearing a particular crucial keyword, Tang Qi didn’t interrupt McGraw but suppressed his excitement and maintained a calm demeanor as McGraw finished relaying all the information he had heard.
After that keyword, many pieces of information were equally useful. They fell into Tang Qi’s ears like pearls bouncing endlessly in the void, eventually being strung together by an invisible thread. Some past uncertainties that he couldn’t find answers to, gradually became clearer.
In his eyes, there was also a faint appearance of shock, like never before.
It seemed that he had inadvertently glimpsed a great secret.
A dozen minutes later, McGraw stopped, then looked at Tang Qi somewhat nervously, unsure if he had relayed the information and conversation thoroughly.
But soon, he got his answer.
“Excellent memory, the task was performed very well.”
Tang Qi slightly raised his head and praised McGraw, then pulled out a pouch from his robe, slightly shook it, and immediately, an immensely enticing sound emerged. If one were a cunning, outstanding merchant, they would be able to tell that it contained gold coins.
Only Divine Grace could produce such a pleasant sound.
Wei Lei and Nar, on the other hand, sounded rather irritating.
That’s Messer merchants’ evaluation of the three types of coins: gold, silver, and copper.
McGraw was just a young beggar; of course, he didn’t have such rich experience.
However, no matter the type, money was the highest gospel to him.
Though he very much wanted to take the pouch, take out the money to buy the best tasting hot dogs, buy a new outfit, or perhaps even venture to Red Bird Street and completely end his virginity…many thoughts flashed through McGraw’s mind.
Despite this, he restrained himself, trying hard to appear calmer.
Just like during the day, he was actually quite smart and knew he should demonstrate his value in front of a “big shot.”
And at this moment, he had indeed done so.
Tang Qi gave a faint smile, handed the money pouch to him, and uttered a phrase that almost made McGraw ecstatic to the point of fainting.
“This Divine Grace is your reward.”
Watching McGraw seemingly using all his strength to hold the pouch, Tang Qi revealed no hint of mockery but simply nodded slightly and then turned to walk towards the other end of the alley. Just before his figure was about to disappear into the darkness…
A sentence gently floated into McGraw’s ears.
“You can use this Divine Grace to live a normal life, at least you won’t starve anymore, you can afford bread, and meat, and even rent a small room, run a small business to sustain yourself…”
“Or, use it to hire a few beggars who share your aspirations; at the proper time, you might find more valuable work with me.”
As the voice faded, Tang Qi’s figure slowly dissolved into the darkness and disappeared.
Back where he was, McGraw stood dumbfounded, still tightly clutching the money pouch, but his clever eyes twinkled uncertainly, as if countless thoughts surfaced.
Though an uneducated little beggar, his ability to survive on the streets to such an extent with a disabled body, clearly indicated he too had something extraordinary about him.
Such as decisiveness.
After a few seconds, or perhaps longer, his body suddenly relaxed, and he let out a long, murky breath. There was no longer any trace of confusion in his eyes; it seemed he had made some sort of decision.
However, he quickly remembered the greater area he was in, and with a shiver, instead of putting his coin purse into his pocket as he initially intended, he quickly changed his mind and stuffed it into an “indescribable” area, then limped back towards the street where the police station was located.
As he approached the street near Thorns Campus, under the dim streetlights, Tang Qi walked unhurriedly towards his home.
Various thoughts surfaced in his mind.
Most of them were of the shocking kind.
The conversation of the Harria Sisters recounted by McGraw, most of which was nonsense, but parts of it were crucial for Tang Qi.
The temporary leadership of Abu, in the absence of Samra’s family along with Old Morgan’s disappearance, seemed to have dissatisfied them, or rather, they were discontent with Abu for not actively searching for Old Morgan but instead gathering information about “treasure maps” and “all the battles of the Lord Confessor.”
They also didn’t believe the information about “Thorny High School specifically suppressing the Black Snake Witch Cult,” “the High Priest of the Black Snake Witch Cult who left the Saha Continent not being dead but suppressed by the Lord Confessor,” “along with other strong members of the Southern Alliance Army being suppressed”… To the Harria Sisters, who lack witchcraft talent, these were just excuses.
They believed Abu was afraid of the noble high school’s influence, not daring to go there and extract the high school student, who was previously Old Morgan’s young master, to clarify things.
Every piece of information, as it reached Tang Qi’s ears, was like thunder.
Tang Qi himself did not expect that a casual act, a small side job, could unearth such great secrets.
From Old Morgan’s diary, Tang Qi knew that Abu, the only son of the Puppet Fosca, a talented and ambitious Black Snake wizard, seemed frail and ugly. Still, Tang Qi didn’t expect this wizard to discover a truth buried in history independently without the constraints of Samra and Old Morgan.
Following those leads, various speculations surged in Tang Qi’s mind.
“Lord Confessor Martin Sims, in his old age, met the North-South Federal War and joined the Northern Alliance Army due to a friend’s invitation to battle against armies led by estate owners from the south; both sides wielded strong Extraordinary Power.”
“However, the Northern forces leaned towards the Justice Camp while the Southern Alliance was a mixture where anyone with Extraordinary Power could join, earning substantial rewards from wealthy estate owners, among them was a black man from the Saha Continent, who was actually the Black Snake Witch Cult’s High Priest.”
“Perhaps, the High Priest was a slave from the start, in the dark ages, always many unexplainable things happened.”
“The war ultimately resulted in the Northern Alliance Army’s victory, and some mad, evil, and unkillably strong members from the Southern Alliance Army were then suppressed by Lord Confessor in a certain location, now the site of the Thorns Campus.”
“Abu collecting treasure maps may be aiming to rescue the High Priest to gain even greater heritage?”
These thoughts were guesses about Abu’s actions, reasonably explaining why Abu hadn’t brought his family to confront them directly, possibly sensing Old Morgan’s soul still existed, thus not rushing but rather planning not to “startle the snake,” aiming for more gains.
It also explained some minor puzzles; Black Witches like Samra and Old Morgan, and evil creatures like the Dog-faced Man, were suppressed in the Thorns Campus, and other Abnormalities didn’t even dare approach the Campus.
But why could the Manatee Sea Demon skin and kill people within the Campus?
This clearly related to some Secret of the Camps; Lord Confessor long dead, with only his power lingering in the campus, incapable of any autonomous consciousness, thus only instinctively detecting and judging evil.
Manatee Sea Demon, or perhaps the entire Sea Demon clan, not seen as part of the Evil Camp in the eyes of Lord Confessor?
It seems the rumors that some Extraordinary creatures among Lord Confessor’s partners were real, perhaps also a reason why he wasn’t respected by the Bright Church.
…
In Tang Qi’s mind, more thoughts continued to emerge; the information he grasped might not be more extensive than Abu’s, but some were definitely more crucial and more Secret.
For instance, each treasure map had a… number.
What do you think?
