Chapter 524 524: Ant King
As Caleb and the ant continued their journey across the desert, they witnessed several more encounters where the dark swarm of crows attacked various creatures of the sand. Each scene was a brutal display of nature's harsh realities, as the soul-sucking crows descended upon their prey with a terrifying efficiency.
In one instance, a large scorpion with armor thick as stone tried to burrow into the safety of the sand, its claws snapping in futile defense. The crows, undeterred, swirled above it, waiting for the moment its defenses weakened. When the scorpion's energy waned, the crows struck, their dark forms diving into the scorpion's body, bypassing its physical armor to feast on its soul. The violence of their attack left the scorpion motionless, its body a mere shell in the sand.
Caleb watched, his expression a mix of fascination and revulsion. The ant, using its antenna, scribbled in the sand beside him, "Nature's cleaners, yet they grow too fast, too furious."
Another scene involved a pair of dueling snakes, their bodies intertwined as they fought over territory. The crows waited until the snakes were exhausted from their battle before moving in. In moments, the life force of both snakes was consumed, their bodies left as twisted husks on the desert floor.
With each successful kill, Caleb noticed an alarming trend. The number of crows seemed to multiply rapidly, their numbers growing larger with every soul they consumed. This unnatural increase made him uneasy, and he shared his observation with the ant.
The ant paused in its writing, then etched more vigorously into the sand, "Unnatural… even by wilderness standards. Balance upset?"@@novelbin@@
Caleb nodded in agreement, his gaze following the now massive swarm as it moved to its next target. The sheer size of the swarm was becoming a spectacle of horror in itself, a black cloud of death that seemed unstoppable.
"Every life they take seems to fuel their numbers," Caleb muttered, his voice low. "If this continues, they could overwhelm the desert's ecosystem. It seems they are the real overlord of this desert." Continue your journey on My Virtual Library Empire
The ant looked up at him, its small eyes reflecting a mix of worry and resignation. It wrote, "Dangerous if left unchecked. Predator needs predator." "What makes them terrifying is they can bypass defense of their target and phase through them."
...
Two days passed. Caleb and the ant stood under the scorching sun, their shadows merging on the hot sand. The desert around them buzzed with the eerie silence following the departure of the crows, and the air still carried the faint echoes of chaos.
The ant, etching lines in the sand with its antenna, voiced its concerns earnestly. "We should leave, head towards the greener outskirts. Those crows... they aren't natural. They're a plague here, and if they notice us, it could be disastrous."
Caleb, however, leaned against a weathered rock, a smirk playing on his lips. He seemed intrigued rather than frightened by the prospect of facing the crows again. "But think about it," he argued with a gleam in his eye. "It's not every day you get to witness such a spectacle. Plus, I promised you a gift, didn't I? Something that could change your view on all of this."
The ant paused, its antenna lifting from the sand. "And what does your gift have to do with those soul-suckers? How can a gift help if we're swarmed by that darkness?"
Caleb chuckled, his gaze drifting to the horizon where the dark cloud had vanished. "Just trust me on this. The gift I have for you... it's more than just an item or a simple favor. It's something that might just give you a fighting chance against those level 3, monsters..."
The ant looked skeptical but intrigued. "You speak of fighting chances and gifts as if you hold some secret power capable of swaying the balance here. Human, what are you planning?"
Caleb straightened up, his expression turning serious. "Let's just say I've been holding back a little. I haven't shown you the full extent of what I can do. Those crows, as deadly as they are, could actually help us demonstrate a few things. Plus, it'll be a good test—to see how well my powers work.on large scale..."
The ant seemed to consider this, its body language showing a mix of resignation and curiosity. "Very well, human. I'll trust your judgment for now. But remember, this isn't just about fun and games. There's much at stake here, especially for someone like me."
Caleb nodded, understanding the weight of the situation. "Don't worry, I know. And when the time comes, you'll see just how beneficial my gift can be."
...
Caleb and the ant were lounging under the intense heat of the desert sun, their bodies sprawled comfortably on the warm sand. Just as they were beginning to relax, the distant, ominous buzz of the crows filled the air again. Standing up to peer into the distance, Caleb's eyes narrowed slightly as he spotted the dark cloud approaching.
The ant, sensing the imminent danger, began to tremble. "They've found us!" it scribbled frantically in the sand with its antenna. But Caleb remained unusually calm, watching the darkening sky as the swarm neared, their cawing growing louder.
As the sky turned from blue to black, overwhelmed by the sheer number of crows, Caleb quipped, "If anyone with a phobia saw this, they'd probably have a heart attack right now." He watched amusedly as the crows zeroed in on their location.
The ant was visibly scared, its body tensed for flight, but Caleb placed a reassuring hand on its shoulder. "Time for your gift, buddy," he said with a grin that held a mysterious twinkle.
Before the ant could react, Caleb clapped his hands together. In an instant, the entire swarm of crows began to transform, their bodies shimmering as they turned into streams of golden light. The light swirled around the ant, enveloping it in a radiant glow. The ant, overwhelmed by the sudden change, panicked, its movements becoming erratic.
"Calm down, buddy. This is my power of fusion. You're about to evolve," Caleb explained, his voice steady and calming. Despite his words, the ant continued to panic, not fully comprehending what was happening.
As the golden light intensified, the ant's form began to change. It grew larger, its body reshaping and gaining new features that were both awe-inspiring and terrifying. Caleb watched with satisfaction.
The buzzing of the swarm faded, replaced by the sound of transformation. The desert around them grew silent, the moment filled with the magic of evolution. Caleb stood back, a proud smile on his face as he witnessed the birth of something new and powerful, all thanks to the fusion of his unique abilities.
Caleb smiled, "Welcome to the birth of ant king!"
