Chapter 503: 278 My Regiment Leader, My Regiment
Chapter 503: Chapter 278 My Regiment Leader, My Regiment
“In the cold north wind and night, I live in perpetual spring.”
With the first line of the song, an immediate silence fell over the crowd. Most of the people present seldom encountered folk songs, which seemed like an aloof, small circle within the music scene.
When people thought of folk songs, what usually came to mind were ancient, obscure tunes. They were about events of the past, lamenting the spring and grieving for the autumn, often unintelligible.
The first line of this song also emerged mysterious and profound. It was hard to define any inherent meaning, literature, or emotion, but no matter how it was sung, it was brimming with sentiment.
Whether the audience first heard of the southern sunshine or the swirling snowflakes, or even the cold northern night and seasons like spring, a scene almost inevitably appeared before their eyes.
South and north divided, one side bathing in brilliant sunlight, the other covered in a flurry of snow. Without considering the logic, the imagery it painted was striking.
In other words, it captured them.
Just like the first time you heard rock music that suited your taste or the first time you listened to a sad love song. Or when an anime’s opening theme really resonated with you, that feeling of initial amazement.
The first slice of watermelon you taste in summer may not be the sweetest, but it’s certainly the most memorable.
That’s exactly how the several hundred listeners felt right now. They had only come to see Lin Wanzhou’s album launch. They joined in the ruckus just casually.
They hadn’t expected Xu Qingyan to deliver anything exceptional, considering it wasn’t a formal occasion. They thought he might perform “Qing Tian” or maybe “Blue and White Porcelain.”
Aficionados for dodging commitments, it wouldn’t have been surprising if he sang a few songs just to skate by. But to everyone’s surprise, Xu Qingyan casually pulled off a masterstroke.
“He says, no commendation of beauty you receive can compare to the first time…” Xu Qingyan sang casually, because this song didn’t hold much commercial value.
It was the type you’d deeply connect with when you were younger, imagining a sad story along with it.
Once you reach adulthood and encounter all aspects of society, the appeal of tragic romantic literature starts to wane, and you begin to chase after animes and manga instead.@@novelbin@@
Or perhaps idols, virtual celebrities, such fictional characters.
Because most adults understand that the ends of the earth do exist. Long-distance relationships aren’t that hard; as long as you have money, distance isn’t an issue.
Heartbreak isn’t that awful either. The one who loves you won’t care what color your Porsche Cayenne is. They won’t ask why your Parmigiani watch isn’t obsidian black.
Once you understand these things, naturally, you won’t be too moved by love anymore. It’s the same as with the two-dimensional world: you might envy others’ relationships, but you don’t believe such things will happen to you.
But regardless, Xu Qingyan’s song was more than enough to satisfy those present. Accustomed to a diet of heavy, quick meals and instant noodles, the audience was quite pleased with this taste of fresh hillside fare.
The song ended, and Xu Qingyan’s save was complete.
Lin Wanzhou stood to one side with a faint smile on her face. To laymen, the scene was entertaining, but connoisseurs looked at the technique. She could tell that Xu Qingyan had just winged it.
She found it amusing that he was consistently casual in his approach, yet was amazed at how Xu Qingyan could still be so flashy.
As for what Xu Qingyan sang, Lin Wanzhou didn’t actually pay much attention. She believed Xu Qingyan hadn’t either; he was always good at brushing things off.
“Encore! Encore!”
The crowd started clamoring again, some cheering, some being rigidly pinned in place. Those two schoolgirls were almost stupefied, experiencing for the first time that folk songs could be sung this way.
“It’s so beautiful… I don’t know how else to describe it, like watching a movie.”
“Yeah, yeah! So gentle!”
The female college students were evidently much more enamored with “Nan Shan Nan,” which was related to their comparatively uncomplicated life experiences. Even if they verbally expressed disbelief in love, deep down, they still harbored a sliver of yearning.
On the stage, Xu Qingyan coughed and then said,
“Thank you, everyone. It’s just that we’re a bit pressed for time… I’m currently shooting a comedy film. I’ll be meeting you all after a while, so you can look forward to it.”
After a brief speech, Xu Qingyan handed the stage back to Lin Wanzhou. In the brief moment they crossed paths on stage, their eyes met fleetingly.
Xu Qingyan gave her a helpless look, while Lin Wanzhou offered a playful thank-you with a twinkle in her eye.
After stepping down,
Qi Ting clapped her hands together sharply in a clap backstage, gratefully exclaiming.
“Thank you so much, Teacher Xu, for saving the show!”
“No need, this matter was also related to me.” He felt a bit awkward, “As long as the launch went smoothly, that’s all that matters. Don’t worry about the rest.”
Back in the empty dressing room, Xu Qingyan exhaled deeply the moment the door closed behind him. He checked the time; it was about time to leave.
He had an evening flight to Capital City.
About twenty minutes later, Lin Wanzhou finished her part and left the stage to the staff. She hurried to the dressing room and pushed open the door to find Xu Qingyan.
After a two-second pause to confirm she wasn’t seeing things, she finally relaxed and placed a hand over her heart.
“You’re leaving?” She latched the door shut.
“Ah, yes.” When Xu Qingyan saw her close the door, his eyelid twitched.
“Why the rush?” Lin Wanzhou asked, somewhat displeased, still wearing that ugly silver bracelet on her wrist, “Can’t you leave tomorrow?”
“It might not work; I’ve got a lot to do tomorrow.” Xu Qingyan sighed.
Ten minutes later,
Xu Qingyan stepped out and wiped away the lipstick mark by his mouth with his cell phone camera. He thought to himself what a mess this was, as if the world had turned on its head. Next time they met, it would probably be awkward.
By midnight, he had arrived in Capital City.
As it turned out, Lin Wanzhou’s album sales were quite decent. According to Lin Wanzhou’s own account, the album sold over two thousand copies within just ten minutes of going online.
