“Is that so? How come I didn’t know about it?” Xu Qingyan exclaimed.
“The Porcelain Town, you forgot? There must be at least some credit due to you,” Zheng Lao said after pondering for a moment, “But the cyan you mentioned that day should be the color of Ru ware.”
Xu Qingyan laughed, “Ru ware doesn’t sound good, so renaming it to Blue and White Porcelain sounds better.”
Zheng Lao was speechless, but then he thought about it and realized it made sense. Nowadays, people focus on appearances; without an eye-catching facade, nobody would take a glance.
Blue and White Porcelain compared to Ru ware, at least at first sight, creates a vivid impression in one’s mind.
“That reasoning… works too, it’s quite fresh.”
Upon hearing this, Xu Qingyan wasn’t too shaken inside. Ultimately, it wasn’t his decision to make. However, the song title “Blue and White Porcelain” was indeed ingeniously chosen.
“Your digression almost made me forget about the important matters,” Zheng Lao remarked, a talkative man himself. He slapped his head, “Where were we?”
“You mentioned a small issue and asked if I was interested,” he said.
“Oh right, truly, the older I get, the more useless I become.”
Xu Qingyan’s eyelids twitched slightly, remembering the joke he and Zhao Mingyuan had in the car earlier. He silently dismissed the thought of being “as young as a grandson” and spoke up.
“At your level, you’re still considered a young official, right?”
“You even know my rank?”
“Found it on Baidu.”
Zheng Lao almost threw his back out from Xu Qingyan’s sudden sass. The kid could be sharp or slow at times, and occasionally his piercing sincerity hit too close to home.
He coughed, bringing the runaway topic back on track.
“It’s like this: I was talking about you on the phone with an old friend the other day. I was thinking if you might write a song to promote Dian Nan?”
“Dian Nan?”
“Yeah, if you guys build a team, it has to be in Dian Nan, right?” Zheng Lao said with a chuckle, “When you go there, check it out and see if you can write a song.”
“This could be a bit difficult…” Xu Qingyan didn’t refuse but pointed out the difficulty from the start.
As for the difficulty, these unrestricted creative tasks really had none. However, rushing to deliver without any benefit wasn’t appealing either.
This wasn’t being mercenary; it was about defending one’s rightful interests. Since it was a promotional song, even if not for money, there should be some recognition.
Like writing “My Regiment Leader, My Regiment,” there must be something in it for him.
“There will certainly be difficulties; take your time to consider it,” Zheng Lao said, waving his hand, “The task hasn’t been officially handed to you yet, you can raise any concerns.”
“This was originally a contest that anyone could enter. But if you have an idea, you can contact me. If the song is good, we can make special arrangements.”
Upon hearing this, Xu Qingyan couldn’t help but let out an ‘oh’ internally. No wonder… they were waiting for him.
Xu Qingyan didn’t hesitate and took up the offer on the spot.
“If the organization helps, I believe that no matter how big the difficulty is, it can be overcome. It’s just that, I have an awkward request, and I don’t know whether I should talk about it or not.”
“Speak, speak, speak.” Zheng Lao sized up Xu Qingyan, impressed.
Like a tortoise meeting a turtle, they were kindred spirits.
This young man, so full of schemes, always spoke with reserve. He didn’t seem like an artistic worker at all; more like someone seasoned by society’s blade.
“Alright, then I’ll say it. If it works out…” Xu Qingyan chuckled, “Old man, for the promotion, could I designate someone to perform the song?”
“This is not something I can decide on my own…”
Once Xu Qingyan heard the words ‘in principle,’ he knew he was set. ‘In principle’ no means yes, ‘in principle’ yes means no.
Two days later, Xu Qingyan finally flew back to Xinghai.
Landing, airport.
No sooner had he taken out his phone than it rang; the screen showed Pei Muchan.
“Hello?”
“Just follow the exit, I’m outside,” Pei Muchan said.
Twenty minutes later, Xu Qingyan opened the driver’s door. The two switched places, and as the car started, he turned to glance at Pei Muchan.
Seeing her wearing a mask, with an indifferent expression, he couldn’t help but laugh.
“Why did you come?”
“To pick you up, why else would I ask about your flight?” Pei Muchan conveyed her frustration at his feigned ignorance, busying herself with her phone before adding, “That album sold close to four hundred thousand times, they’re getting ready to release physical copies.”
“That’s great, are you planning to shoot a music video or something?” Xu Qingyan pressed the accelerator smoothly, “I took on a gig, let’s see if you can sing?”
At those words, Pei Muchan’s finger paused on the screen.
“Aren’t you also running a production crew for filming? Two crews, can you handle… it all?”
“It’s okay, the schedules don’t overlap,” Xu Qingyan said, as if he didn’t catch the implication in Pei Muchan’s voice, “Just flying around, a bit tiring, that’s all.”
Pei Muchan: “Oh.”
Looking out the window as cars flew by in reverse, she thought about what he had just said and felt a shadow pass over her. After February comes March, she couldn’t be bothered to quarrel with him anymore.
“It’s not that busy, actually. I don’t have to go to Capital City for now,” Xu Qingyan laughed, “With Wei Wufeng at the production side, I’ll be free once I write a song.”
Pei Muchan: “Oh.”
The car parked in the underground parking lot of Xu Qingyan’s apartment complex. Today, he planned to rest. Work for the studio and the song could wait.
Xu Qingyan got out of the car, tugging his luggage, and after a couple of steps, he suddenly turned back to look at Pei Muchan.
“Want to come up for a bit?”
Pei Muchan looked at him for a moment and without turning back, walked away. The engine roared in the underground lot, and she dashed off without a trace.
Xu Qingyan stood where he was, watching the distant taillights disappear and smiled, his lips twitching involuntarily.
