Chapter 109: Chapter 109: For Your Wife
Granny Huo looked at her grandson like this and, adding on his expression, instantly understood what was going on. She teased with a laugh, “Aiyoo, my grandson is all grown up now.
“It’s time to talk about a wife, and these days Granny will help you look around, see which family has a good girl.”
When Huo Chen heard this, Xu Ying’s smiling face couldn’t help but appear in his mind. He stood there, foolishly, in front of the washbasin, his lips curving into a smile.
Granny Huo saw her grandson looking like that and knew the lad had someone in his heart. Her thoughts inadvertently turned to the captain’s daughter.
She was a good girl, but a pity, his family’s conditions were not good enough for her.
However, matters of the heart depend on fate, and when fate arrives, no one can stop it.
Granny Huo walked back into the house with small steps, and soon came running back out with a box piled high with dust, indicating it hadn’t been opened for a long time.
As she looked at the box, her mind was filled with thoughts. She carefully opened it and took out a pair of golden bracelets inlaid with red gemstones.
“Xiao Chen, come here!” Granny Huo called out, her eyes red-rimmed.
These were her husband’s ancestral belongings, and after so many conflicts, only this box of items remained.
Fortunately, she hadn’t let those unfilial children take them.
Huo Chen looked at the large golden bracelets in her hands, a look of surprise across his face. He never expected his Granny to have such treasured items.
Although such things weren’t worth much money now, he always felt they were special, and that someday, someone would appreciate them.
“In the future, give this to your wife. Once you’ve decided on the girl and that you can’t marry anyone but her, then give this to her,” Granny Huo said as she took out the golden bracelet.
There were also several compartments underneath the box, containing bracelets too, but they were not gold, they were jade.
She would give those to him later.
Huo Chen immediately refused, “Granny, these are too valuable.”
Granny Huo replied, “I have only one grandson; should I not give them to you and instead take them with me to the grave? Take them, all that’s in here is for you.”
Huo Chen still shook his head, “Let’s wait until I find someone to give them to, you keep them for now.”
Granny Huo felt that was fine too and nodded. Just as she was about to put the box back, the front door of the house was pushed open.
Huo Hanjie swaggered into the yard. Seeing the items in Granny Huo’s hands, his eyes lit up instantly. He ran over quickly, bending his back and with a look of flattery said to Granny Huo, “Mom, you actually have golden bracelets, they must be around forty or fifty grams.
“These things can be exchanged for money now, give them to me and I will go trade them so we can buy you some roast chicken to eat.”
Granny Huo saw her eldest son, and her face instantly turned pitch black, slapping away the hand he extended towards her, “Get out of here; don’t call me mom, I don’t have such an unfilial son.”
Back when the Huo Family fell into trouble, after her husband passed away, those kids were the fastest to sever their ties with her.
In the most difficult times, it was Huo Chen, this kid, who depended on her for life. Now that their days had gotten slightly better, this shameless man dared to come knocking.
Don’t think she didn’t know; this guy was just jealous of the money Huo Chen made yesterday.
It wasn’t just him being jealous. When everyone heard yesterday that Huo Chen had made over ten yuan, they all became envious, even going as far as clamoring for a share of the game Huo Chen had hunted.
In the end, it was the captain who spoke up, saying whoever wanted to hunt game should do so with their own skills.
These people finally gave their minds a rest.
Wild animals aren’t something you can just hunt whenever you want, the mountains are extremely dangerous. There aren’t just wolves but also blind bears; this is money earned by risking one’s life.
Huo Hanjie had no shame, “Mom, what are you saying? I am your flesh and blood, the one you gave birth to and raised. If I don’t call you ‘Mom,’ who else would I call? I’ll have to take care of you in your old age. Such a large golden bracelet, are you really not going to give it to me but to this brat instead? Don’t forget, I am the real son with your blood in my veins, he’s just some wild bastard that popped up halfway along.”
Granny Huo trembled with anger upon hearing this, “Get out, get out of my sight! How could ten months of pregnancy result in such a disrespectful son? If I had known, I would have thrown you into the urine pot and drowned you back then. He is my grandson; you get out. If it weren’t for him, I don’t know if I could still be alive now. My own son isn’t as filial as the grandson I took in. Huo Hanjie, I have already severed ties with you. This golden bracelet has nothing to do with you, not even worth ten cents. I am going to give this to my grandson.”
Huo Hanjie became furious upon hearing this. His eyes darted around the courtyard, quickly spotting a broom in the corner. He grabbed it swiftly and threatened Granny Huo directly, “You’re going to give it to me or not? If you don’t, I’ll smash up the yard.”
Granny Huo gasped for air in fury, glaring at her son. How could she have given birth to such a person? “Go ahead then,” Huo Chen’s eyes were sharp as they swept over him.
Huo Hanjie felt a chill run down his spine but, looking at the large golden bracelet, he couldn’t give up. So he gathered his courage, gripping the broom and swung it down onto a bench in the yard.
Granny Huo entered the house, as if to let her grandson do whatever he deemed necessary.
Approved by Granny Huo, Huo Chen strode towards Huo Hanjie.
“You, you—you, what are you trying to do? I’m telling you, if you dare lay a finger on me, I’ll call the police,” whined Huo Hanjie, trembling like a quail.
Huo Chen didn’t say a word and punched him directly in the head, then quickly landed several kicks, sending Huo Hanjie flying.
But that wasn’t the end of it. Huo Chen grabbed Huo Hanjie by the leg, dragged him towards Huo Hanjie’s house.
At the doorstep, he threw him aside and kicked open Huo Hanjie’s front door.
The voice of Huo Hanjie’s wife rose up, shrill as a pig being slaughtered, “Who is so heartless to kick my door down…”
She wanted to keep cursing, but the moment her gaze met Huo Chen’s cold eyes, all her words got stuck in her throat.
Huo Chen entered the courtyard and kicked a water tank, creating a big hole, making water gush out.
“Ah!” Huo Hanjie’s wife screamed. The children in the house were so frightened they immediately hid inside.
“Huo Chen, what are you doing? Stop it, you can’t smash things up like this,” Huo Hanjie’s wife stood to one side, panicked, trying to intervene but was too frightened to move a step closer upon seeing Huo Chen’s brooding face.
Glancing at the man on the ground, she was filled with anger. This damned man promised to butter up Huo Chen and swindle those few yuan from him. How did things end up like this?
Huo Chen then raised his foot and kicked a table in the yard, which flew up into the air. He followed with another kick, sending the table crashing into the house with such force, a big hole was left in the door.
What do you think?
