Chapter 120: 121 You Robbed a Bank
Chapter 120: Chapter 121 You Robbed a Bank
Xu Shengwu rubbed his sister’s little head and nodded, “I’ll be driving off this afternoon, take this with you.”
Xu Ying looked curious as she inspected the small cloth bundle in her hands. She opened a small gap and, upon seeing what was inside, her mouth fell open in shock, “Brother, did you rob a bank?”
Her brother only earned fifty-eight yuan per month, gave thirty-eight to their mother, and kept twenty for food and drink. Sometimes he even bought her clothes and shoes; he simply couldn’t save any money. Moreover, he had only been working for less than two years, even if he didn’t eat or drink, he couldn’t have saved up that much.
Xu Shengwu gave his sister a glare and tapped her forehead, “What are you thinking? Your brother isn’t that reckless.”
“Then how did you get the money?” Xu Ying’s face was stern, worried that her brother had done something foolish.
“I earned it myself,” Xu Shengwu said proudly.
Xu Ying’s expression turned serious when she heard this, “Did you do it by following Huo Chen?”
Xu Shengwu hadn’t expected his little sister to guess so accurately. He touched his earlobe and nodded, “There won’t be any trouble, don’t worry.”
Xu Ying glared at him, planning to find Huo Chen after work and have a word with him. Doing business was fine, and so was speculative trading, but smuggling was absolutely not allowed. She also wanted to keep him away from Zhou Kun. The thought of her brother being arrested in the past life for going to the black market pained her heart.
Seeing his sister’s eyes reddening, Xu Shengwu immediately became anxious and clumsily tried to explain, “I was only involved a few times, I definitely won’t do it again, please don’t cry.”
Xu Ying gave him a stern look, “I am not going to cry. It’s a good thing to earn money, but you have to be smart about it. It’s better to do less of such things; what would happen to mom and dad if anything went wrong?”
Xu Shengwu nodded and promised nothing would go wrong. After having another meal at the restaurant, Xu Ying prepared some dry food for him to take with him and then watched as Xu Shengwu left.
As soon as she finished work in the afternoon, Xu Ying hurriedly cycled back home.
Mrs. Xu was so excited to see her daughter return that she was close to tears, having missed her terribly for days.
“Daughter, why are you home today? Are you off tomorrow?” Mrs. Xu asked.
Xu Ying shook her head. The new arrival was still resting at home, and it was just her and Chef Ge cooking at the restaurant, so she couldn’t take time off. She had come back to find Huo Chen.
“Mom, I’ll be out for a bit and then I’ll come back,” Xu Ying said before quickly leaving.
Mrs. Xu had a lot more to say to her daughter, but watching her leave, she couldn’t help but feel a bit sad.
Xu Ying stepped out of her house, intending to go to the Huo Family, when she unexpectedly ran into an old acquaintance, “Wu Qingsong, why are you at Sister Lan Cao’s house?”
Was this a relative?
Seeing Xu Ying, Wu Qingsong said loudly and casually, “Sister Lan Cao is from my village. She has been kind to me, so I often bring her food.”
Xu Ying nodded.
Curiously, Wu Qingsong asked, “Don’t you live in the county now? Why are you coming back in the evening?”
Thinking of Huo Chen as she answered Wu Qingsong, Xu Ying thought it would be good to also remind him, “I need to talk to you about something. My brother might be clever, but sometimes he can be too single-minded and easily led astray. I know you and Huo Chen are both sharp thinkers, but I don’t want my brother to get into trouble. Please pass on a message to Huo Chen for me. Also, that Zhou Kun, I don’t think he’s a good person.”
Her words were disjointed, leaving Wu Qingsong a bit puzzled, but he obediently passed the message on to Huo Chen.
“Brother Chen, what does Xu Ying mean by this?” Wu Qingsong still didn’t understand. Did she think they would bring harm to her brother?
But Huo Chen understood Xu Ying’s warning. He had met Zhou Kun and dealt with him, finding the man to be full of petty scheming.
Indeed, we should be more cautious.
“Xu Ying’s point is that our line of work is very dangerous,” Huo Chen said, uninterested in engaging further. “We should be more wary of outsiders. Her older brother isn’t that crafty, so don’t let him get too involved.”
After sending the man away, Huo Chen went to Captain Xu’s house.
In the village, everyone who wanted to build a house went through Captain Xu. The rate was one yuan per day, including one meal at lunch.
“Why the sudden idea to build a house?” Mr. Xu was somewhat suspicious.
Huo Chen spoke honestly, “My house is too dilapidated. I’m afraid the snow this year will collapse it.
Recently, I’ve earned some money and thought I’d rebuild it.
Plus, my grandmother said I’m not getting any younger and should get married.
If I’m getting married, I definitely can’t mistreat the bride. The house has to be new, and for the wedding, I will go all out with a grand procession and give everything that ought to be given.”
Huo Chen’s words were not only meant for Captain Xu but also for Xu Ying.
Xu Ying looked at Huo Chen skeptically. This man was thinking about taking a wife! Was he expecting her to introduce him to someone?
Mr. Xu responded with a continuous smile on his face upon hearing this.
Mrs. Xu chimed in, “Huo Chen, since you’re going to build a house, you should build a decent one. Isn’t it popular to build brick houses these days?
I think those houses are nice. It would be best to have a two-story one; and remember to pay attention to the toilet. My daughter likes cleanliness, you know.”
Huo Chen looked up, slightly surprised by her words.
Before Mrs. Xu could finish, Mr. Xu coughed a few times, interrupting her, “Alright, I’ll help you find some people these next few days.”
There wasn’t much to do in the fields recently. Come winter, everyone had time on their hands, cozying up indoors.
Now that there was a chance to earn money, surely everyone would be eager to work.
Once Huo Chen left, Mrs. Xu’s face fell, “Why did you stop me? What if our daughter doesn’t like the house we build?”
Mr. Xu shot her a glare, “Why talk about things that haven’t happened? Besides, didn’t you see that our daughter seemed a bit off?”
“What? What’s wrong with her?” Mrs. Xu was immediately anxious upon hearing something might be amiss with their daughter.
Mr. Xu shook his head; he couldn’t pinpoint what was wrong but just had a feeling.
Mrs. Xu, seeing him like this, scoffed, “Can’t tell if you’re making things up or not. How boring.”
After speaking, she turned and went into the house.
Mr. Xu, feeling offended by her words, stretched his neck and let out a ‘Heh’.
Once back in the house, Mrs. Xu began to speak to her daughter with a sense of longing, “Daughter, you don’t know how much I missed you because you’ve not been home these past few days.
If I had known you’d be away working daily, I wouldn’t have let you go. We aren’t short on money. How comfortable it would be for you to stay at home.”
Xu Ying, amused by this, took out her earnings for the day and pulled out ten yuan, “Mom, here’s the gift money for you and dad. Five yuan each.”
Mrs. Xu’s eyes widened like gongs upon seeing the money, “You got paid? How much? You’re giving so much to me and your father; what will you have left to spend?
Your brother already provides for us, keep this money for your own expenses.”
Xu Ying smiled and refused, “What my brother gives is his business; this is my filial gift to you and dad, you must accept it.”
She then took out a stack of ration coupons given with her salary, which she wouldn’t need—meat, white sugar, fabric; she had them all in her space.
“Mom, take these too. Give these brown sugar coupons to my sister-in-law.”
Mrs. Xu, puzzled, “Why give them to her? She’s an adult, why does she need these?”
What do you think?
