Chapter 122: 123: Building the House
Chapter 122: Chapter 123: Building the House
“Huo Chen, you’ve started building your house so quickly, your hunting must be very profitable,” some people began to say enviously.
“I think, why don’t we all just quit our jobs and start hunting? There’s so much wildlife on the mountain, I refuse to believe we can’t catch anything.”
“That’s right, the mountain resources are meant to be for everyone. Why should Huo Chen get to hunt everything?” everyone was visibly jealous.
Huo Chen still maintained a cold expression, “Indeed, there is plenty of wildlife on the mountain. Besides, there’s not much to do in the fields now. If everyone wants to go, they can.”
Upon hearing this, the people were instantly motivated. Hunting in the mountains could earn them more than ten yuan a day, whereas building his house only paid one yuan a day.
Many people who knew how to make a profit were no longer interested in building the house.
Of the more than twenty people Mr. Xu had gathered, only ten remained.
Huo Chen didn’t care at all, asking Mr. Xu for help was just a formality, and those who left didn’t stay long.
Soon Wu Qingsong brought along many strong, capable-looking men.
Knowing Xu Ying preferred cleanliness, Huo Chen used floor tiles for the toilet and the rest of the house as well.
Mr. Xu had never seen such a thing before, and after asking about it, he learned they were to be laid on the floor.
He even tapped on them, finding them to be solid wooden boards with patterns on them, and couldn’t help but admire how beautiful they were.
With the addition of Wu Qingsong and others, the progress was quick. A job that was supposed to take ten days was finished in five.
The first two-story small house in Xujia Village was completed, and many villagers looked on with envy.
And those who went hunting returned disheveled after just two days.
They didn’t know how to set traps at all. Even when they managed to set them, and were quite satisfied with their work, the prey would escape from the traps quickly.
Not to mention archery, they had never learned it; their arrows always misfired, they didn’t even catch a feather of a wild chicken or rabbit.
There were some lucky ones who caught a wild chicken, but it took a tremendous effort and nearly made them tumble down the mountain.
Suddenly, everyone became much more humble.
Seeing the large house Huo Chen had built, people started having other ideas.
Now that Huo Chen’s house was built, it seemed he must have earned a lot previously. They had always thought Huo Chen was the poorest in the village, and they all felt as if they had been slapped in the face.
Now with the house, earning a few hundred yuan a month would make him even richer than the team leader’s family.
Huo Chen was by himself at his house, how could he spend all that?
Thinking of Huo Chen’s age, many people started to consider his marital prospects.
Ever since Granny Huo moved into the new house, people frequented her doorstep.
“Old sister, look at my granddaughter. She’s eighteen this year. Don’t mind her youth; she knows how to take care of a man. Just let my granddaughter marry in, and she’ll definitely take good care of Huo Chen.”
“Old sister, take a look at my daughter. Although she’s a bit older, she’s more nurturing. Plus, my daughter is efficient at work. Once she marries in, she’ll respect you and take good care of Huo Chen too.”
A bunch of women gossiped endlessly at Huo Chen’s house.
Even Mrs. Xu became anxious, “Do you think Huo Chen might actually marry someone else?”
Mr. Xu was not worried at all; the way the young man looked at his daughter was the same way he had looked at his wife, surely he wasn’t wrong.
Days went by, Mr. Xu was constantly anxious, afraid that the leadership coming to inspect the village wouldn’t be satisfied.
Gu Fuying had been incredibly bothered lately; that man somehow learned she worked at the supply and marketing cooperative, and would wait for her every day after work.
He asked her to give him a chance to pursue her.
He was so ugly that she couldn’t bear the thought. Just imagining kissing such an ugly man made Gu Fuying want to vomit.
“What should we do? It’s not right for her to keep pestering you like this,” Xu Qiuye felt sympathy for her.
Gu Fuying was worried to death.
“Yingying, what do you think I should do?”
Xu Ying came up with an idea for her, “Go and find out this guy’s weak points. The neighbors who have lived with him for a long time must be very observant. Just ask about him, and you’ll know what kind of person he is.
By leveraging his weaknesses or things he detests, you can annoy him. Even if he’s persistent, he’ll definitely start to resent you, and then he’ll stop pestering you.”
Upon hearing this, Gu Fuying’s eyes lit up, “Okay, I’ll go inquire after work.”
For her safety, Xu Ying suggested she either bring someone along or have someone help her with the inquiring.
Given that the man kept bothering her despite her rejections, his character was evidently problematic.
He was too stubborn, which was concerning. What if he resorted to desperate measures to achieve some end?
Gu Fuying became even more frightened after hearing Xu Ying’s words, and she looked at Xu Ying and Xu Qiuye pleadingly, “Qiuye and you are the only two friends I have, can you both accompany me?”
Xu Ying and Xu Qiuye resignedly nodded their heads.
Gu Fuying was overjoyed at this, “Thank you so much.”
“It’s no problem, you don’t need to thank us when doing something for a friend.”
Gu Fuying was touched, and just the thought of her grandaunt made her frustrated.
If it weren’t for her, she wouldn’t have gotten into this mess.
“Shall we start tonight?” asked Xu Ying.
Gu Fuying, grateful, was truly fed up with that man. He was about the same age as her father, and she didn’t like him at all.
Moreover, this guy was shameless, ignoring her rejections and always wearing an honest smile, leaving her with no place to air her grievances.
After planning their strategy, Gu Fuying and Xu Qiuye hurried off to work.
After enduring until the end of the workday, Gu Fuying, like a wild horse freed from its reins, pulled Xu Qiuye and ran quickly to a restaurant.
Xu Ying had just changed clothes, getting ready to leave work, “Let’s go.”
“Do you know where He Junqing’s house is?”
“Yes!” Gu Fuying nodded, her grandaunt had mentioned it before, and she had a good memory and had taken note of it.
That made things easier, the three of them rode their bikes and asked for directions to the vicinity of He Junqing’s village.
They didn’t dare to enter the village directly to ask around; instead, they inquired on the outskirts and found out He Junqing was quite notorious.
“You’re talking about He Junqing? Well, he’s good at working, but he’s just too stingy.
Do you know? When he went on a blind date, he took a girl out to eat.
Do you know how he asked her out?”
“How did he do it?” The three turned into keen listeners, and Xu Ying even thoughtfully handed out some sunflower seeds.
The old lady, cracking the seeds, perked up when telling the story, “He asked the girl to bring her own vegetables and meat to cook at his house, then he used his firewood and even charged her for it.
It was penny-pinching like you wouldn’t believe, who does that?”
Gu Fuying listened with a look of disgust, no wonder her grandaunt didn’t want her cousin to marry him.
“Anything else?”
“He’d give gifts when courting a girl and then ask for money back, claiming she was money-hungry!”
“Just a few days ago, he went on a blind date and took a girl out to a restaurant. They had a plate of dumplings, and he followed her all the way just to get his money back.
With him being so miserly, despite appearing wealthy, who would dare marry him!” The old lady was as animated as a storyteller, vivid in her descriptions.
What do you think?
