Chapter 162: 163 Let's Give It a Try

Chapter 162: Chapter 163 Let’s Give It a Try

Gu Fuzhu wasn’t scared at all; she’d woken up feeling very safe, so now she just playfully stuck out her tongue, then looked at her mother with excitement and said, “Mom, I met a really incredible girl today.

Her name is Xu Ying. Do you know about the Wu family? They are just the worst. Not only are they corrupt, but they also bully the girls…”

Third Aunt Gu could tell her daughter was unharmed, so her worried heart instantly settled down. She’d also heard about the Wu family’s misdeeds with her husband.

They really admired that girl for her courage and wits; she truly was incredible.

“Dad, you said you were a good leader, that you serve the people, that you dedicate yourself to the girls. Now that the people are in trouble, will you help or not?” Gu Fuzhu stood there, extremely indignant.

Third Uncle Gu looked at his daughter and smiled, “What’s this about now?”

“I and Fuying were kidnapped by the people behind the Wu family. They wanted to ruin Xu Ying. Such a brave girl shouldn’t be harmed by those ruthless people,” Gu Fuzhu’s eyes were filled with hope as she stared intently at her father.

When Mr. Gu heard his daughter was harmed by the Wu family, he was trembling with rage.

Third Uncle Gu was the same, but he kept his composure well, showing no emotion.

No matter whether this involved his daughter or not, these people had simply gone too far. If he did nothing, he’d be letting down his own position.

Third Uncle Gu’s expression was serious, “Let’s go back first. I will investigate this matter thoroughly.”

With these words from Third Uncle Gu, Gu Fuzhu’s face broke into a smile immediately.

Mr. Gu also breathed a sigh of relief. If these people were not dealt with properly, they might endanger Yingying in the future. His kind-hearted daughter didn’t deserve any retaliation.

After sending Third Uncle Gu off, Mr. Gu went back inside the house. By then, Gu Fuying had already fallen asleep, and Gu’s mother came out of the daughter’s room.

“How is it? Is our daughter still feeling bad?” Mr. Gu asked.

Gu’s mother shook her head, “Fuying said that when that person wanted to take advantage of her, Wu Qingsong arrived just in time. Our daughter was spared any discomfort.

I talked with her for a bit, and it looks like she’s really okay. You still don’t understand our daughter; she’s carefree and unaffected by what happened.”

Mr. Gu nodded at this, finally able to take a deep breath of relief.

“You go to sleep first. I’ll give a call to the public security office. They’ve been a great help.”

Gu’s mother nodded and returned to her room. She didn’t have to worry about the rest; her husband would handle it, especially since her younger brother had been transferred to the county.

She guessed that the truth would soon be uncovered, and punishment meted out to the wicked.

In the pitch-black night, a few traces of dawn’s light began to fade into the sky. In the stillness, it hid the promise of life. The village slowly awoken, with smoke lazily rising from chimneys, one after another.

As soon as Xu Ying opened her eyes, she hurriedly ran out of bed.

Mrs. Xu had just gotten up and was in the yard feeding poultry. Hearing the commotion, she turned her head and saw her daughter barefoot in the yard, which immediately alarmed her.

She ran hastily toward her daughter, both heartbroken and angry, “You’re all grown up, how can you be so careless as to run outside without wearing shoes.

Go back and put your shoes on right away. What if you catch a cold? Are you trying to wrench your mother’s heart out?”

Mrs. Xu went on and on without end. When she looked up and saw her daughter’s eyes brimming with tears and a distressed expression staring at her, she felt an extreme panic, “What’s wrong, did you have a nightmare?”

“Mom!” Xu Ying called out, her body shaking visibly, her eyes full of tears, her hair drenched like rain, tears rimming her eyes, her slender shoulders trembling. She looked so sorrowfully pitiful and endearing.

“What happened?!” Mrs. Xu was dying of anxiety.

“What’s the matter?” Mr. Xu heard the noise inside the house, got dressed, and came running out, only to see his daughter’s red-rimmed eyes glistening with tears, the old father’s heart ached terribly.

“What’s wrong, did you have a nightmare?”

“Mom and Dad, it’s nothing. I was just scared yesterday,” Xu Ying wiped the tears from the corners of her eyes and suddenly laughed, relieved that her parents were okay.

She thought it would be just like her past life.

“Sweetheart, it’s okay now, don’t be afraid!” Mrs. Xu’s voice became gentle and soothing, as she touched her daughter’s hair, comforting her.

Indeed, she was terrified. After all, she had been kidnapped. Her daughter was so pretty, and it was fortunate that Huo Chen arrived in the nick of time to rescue her or she might have suffered terribly.

Thinking of Huo Chen, she tentatively asked, “Huo Chen saved you yesterday, should I send him some chicken eggs later?”

As soon as Xu Ying heard Huo Chen’s name, her eyes sparked, and soon she smiled and said, “I’ll go.”

After yesterday’s incident, she suddenly felt she had been too capricious. It was just dating, after all. If it worked out, they would get married; if not, they would break up.

Mrs. Xu laughed upon hearing this, “Alright, you go. Hurry back to your room and put on your shoes.”

Xu Ying also felt her feet getting cold by now, puffing her breath as she tiptoed quickly back to her room to put on her clothes and shoes. She wrapped a scarf around herself and went to the kitchen, then she took a basket, filled it with a few chicken eggs, and left the house.

Outside, she slipped her hand into the basket and stealthily took out some chicken and duck eggs from her hidden stash, then grabbed a few pounds of pork and headed to Huo Chen’s house.

“Granny Huo!” Xu Ying stood at the entrance and called out.

Granny Huo was cooking in the kitchen. Hearing the voice, she immediately called for Huo Chen, “Is that Yingying calling from outside?”

Huo Chen was tidying up the house. Hearing his grandmother’s words, his hands clutching the cloth tightened, and he walked toward the yard.

“Huo Chen, this is for you. Thank you for saving me again yesterday.” Xu Ying stuck her head out, looking exceedingly cute.

Huo Chen looked down at Xu Ying, stretching out his slender fingers to take the basket. Their fingertips brushed against each other briefly, and Huo Chen quickly withdrew his hand, a blush spreading across his face.

Xu Ying couldn’t suppress her laughter.

“What are you laughing at?” Huo Chen’s dark eyes were full of puzzlement.

Shaking her head, Xu Ying’s eyes gleamed mischievously at him, “Aren’t you going to invite me in?”

Huo Chen flickered with surprise at her words. Ever since he had confessed his feelings, she had been avoiding him, deliberately or not. This was the first time she had spoken to him like this since then.

“Come in.” Huo Chen stepped aside, clearing the way.

Xu Ying strode into the courtyard and saw Granny Huo with breakfast ready. The old woman smiled warmly at Xu Ying, “Yingying, have you had breakfast? Would you like something to eat at our house?”

“No thank you, I just came to see Huo Chen. He saved me again yesterday, and I wanted to check if he was hurt.”

During yesterday’s commotion, Huo Chen had swiftly taken down several men, moving too quickly for Xu Ying to see if he had been injured. Now, seeing him walk and work with steady assurance, he seemed unharmed.

Having checked on him, Xu Ying was ready to return home.

Huo Chen stood at the entrance, watching her leave.

Xu Ying had taken a few steps when she turned her head back, teasing him, “Aren’t you going to see me off?”

Huo Chen was taken aback, his ears turning red in an instant, a touch of panic in his movement as he came towards her, “Aren’t you avoiding me anymore?”

“Why would I avoid you?”

“Weren’t you not wanting to be with me?” Huo Chen said, his expression turning a bit sorrowful.

Xu Ying shook her head, half of her face revealed beneath the scarf, and looked at Huo Chen slowly saying, “Let’s give it a try!”
