Chapter 679: Chapter 679: Luke and Cain

“`

Luke was born into a poor family, and his mother fell ill and passed away when he was young. When he was about to enter university, his father also died in a car accident.

It could be said his life was fairly tragic.

After his father’s death, there were no savings left for him, so he couldn’t afford to go to university.

He ended up as a waiter at a restaurant.

For him, it was all about how to live a decent life at the bottom.

...

As for making big money, becoming wealthy, climbing the social ladder, changing his life, or establishing a dynasty, he hadn’t thought about any of that.

Such things only happened in Hollywood movies and were not going to really happen to a kid from the lower class like him.

As for love, he didn’t even dare to think about that.

He wasn’t handsome, nor was he good at sweet-talking to win a girl’s heart; basically, no girls liked him.

His good friend Cain was born into a wealthy family and was a graduate of Newark Business School.

However, he didn’t learn much at the university, and by the time he graduated, his father had committed suicide by jumping from a building due to failed investments, leaving behind a mountain of debt.

His family’s assets were all seized, plunging his life into difficulty.

His classmates looked down on him, deliberately isolated him, and he couldn’t find a decent job.

In the end, he was reduced to living on the streets, only able to sleep in the park at night.

By a stroke of fate, the two met and became friends.

Cain also became a waiter at the restaurant where Luke worked, thanks to Luke’s introduction.

And he shared a rented house with Luke.

Cain, having grown up in a wealthy family with nannies to do everything for him and being doted on excessively by his father, had virtually no self-care skills.

If it weren’t for meeting Luke and being looked after by him, he probably would have ended up begging on the streets.

After working at the restaurant for a while, he also recognized his shortcomings.

And going to university did have some benefits after all.

Luke’s idea was to keep working at the restaurant and stick with it indefinitely.

Cain’s idea was to save up some money and perhaps start a small restaurant with Luke as partners, both of them as the owners.

This was still just a plan, and it was unknown how long it would take before they could actually start their restaurant.

But starting a business as poor people was a million times harder than as rich people.

The two had calculated that it would take at least five years to accumulate the startup capital.

However, at least there was hope, giving their lives something to strive for.

As for love, that was also something Cain dared not to wish for.

When his family was rich, he used to change girlfriends frequently in college.

But with no money, naturally, he had no girlfriends.

In the old apartment,

Luke and Cain were off today and watched an advertisement together at home.

“Damn it, Leonardo actually doing such an ad, it’s really degrading,” cursed Luke.

The YTXC robot partner, advertised as an artificial intelligence lover, was essentially an adult product.

What would you buy this thing for? Any adult knows what it’s for.

What love, bullshit!

“`

Is it just about solving physical needs?

With a robot, what kind of love can there be?

That’s how it seemed to him.

“I believe Leonardo didn’t take this ad for no reason, the robot companion must have those features advertised. I’ve heard that YTXC company used to make these products, but they weren’t widely promoted. Now that it has been acquired by a Chinese company and the technology has been perfected, they hired Leonardo and Kate Winslet for the advertisement. I have to say, that’s really bold,” Cain said.

“Why didn’t our own American companies buy it out instead of letting the Chinese do it?” Luke wondered.

“Who knows,” Cain shrugged. “Maybe Americans thought it wasn’t valuable, while the Chinese saw value in it.”

“I heard the Chinese are good at business, but I didn’t believe it until I saw this advertisement. Now, I’m convinced,” Luke said.

“You can tell the Chinese are good at business just by watching an advertisement? How did you figure that out?” Cain asked in disbelief.

“It’s clear just by them hiring Leonardo and Kate Winslet for the ad.”

“Look at us Americans, who would have the clout to hire Leonardo and Kate Winslet for an ordinary brand commercial, let alone for an adult product advertisement?”

“The Chinese did it, and they pulled it off successfully,” Luke asserted.

“No matter what, YTXC and its products have truly become popular.”

“As long as the product quality isn’t too bad, they’re sure to make money, don’t you think?” Luke spoke confidently.

Cain looked at Luke with newfound respect. “Luke, I would have never thought you knew about these things.”

It was known that Luke never went to college.

Many at the lower levels of American society can be quite dim-witted.

Usually, Luke didn’t care much about these matters; after work, it was all about playing games, without thinking about the future—he never made comments like this before.

His current words truly shook Cain.

“Heh, we’ve been saving up to start a restaurant, right? I have to learn some business knowledge,” Luke said with a chuckle.

“I’ve been reading some books on my phone lately. Haven’t you noticed I hardly play games anymore?” Luke grinned.

“I hadn’t realized that. You’re always on your phone, I thought you were still gaming. I didn’t expect you’d switch to reading,” Cain admitted, completely unaware.

He had once tried to persuade Luke to read, as he himself did read.

After all, during his university days, he was an underachiever and a bad boy.

But Luke had said he didn’t like reading, and after pushing so much, Cain had stopped insisting.

To his surprise, Luke started reading in secret…

“Heh, if I don’t read, how will I keep up with you, a college grad, when we open up our restaurant?” Luke chuckled again.

“Don’t say that. I didn’t learn much in college, and I’m also looking for books to read. But I believe that with our efforts, our restaurant will do well in the future, and we won’t have to work for others anymore,” Cain said.

“Yeah,” Luke nodded, “By the way, the launch event is in three days. I’m planning to take the day off to go. Are you coming?”

Cain’s eyebrows raised, “You want to buy an AI companion?”

Luke nodded, “Yeah, I don’t have a girlfriend, so I thought I’d buy one. Besides, didn’t the ad say? They will draw ten lucky attendees on site, and maybe I’ll be one of them.”

Cain laughed bitterly, “Do we even have any luck? If we were lucky, wouldn’t we be in a better place than this?”

“We might not have much luck, but I still want to check it out,” Luke said. “The ad didn’t mention the price, but they said it’s half off if you buy on site. I’ll go and try my luck, and if I’m not one of the lucky ones, I’ll buy one there.”

“Alright, if that’s the case, let’s take the day off together and attend the launch event,” Cain decided.
