Chapter 1401: Becoming a Spell Scribe (1)

"Ah, Ataraxia! You've finally arrived."

Whoosh!

Arriving at the Mage Guild's entrance, Valyr was immediately greeted by both Dalton and Rinea with smiles on their faces.

"I didn't take too long, did I?"

"Not at all." Dalton shook his head. "You're right on time."

Hearing those words, the young man smiled in return.

At the moment he received an update from the old man regarding the Spell Scribe subclass, Valyr showed no hesitation in heading to Astella City as soon as possible, using all the means available to him along the way.

Then again, with his stats already rivaling an average peak Rank 4 class holder, it did not take him too long to arrive at the guild, taking a bit less than a half-hour to get there.

"Just to confirm, you wanted to get the Spell Scribe subclass, right?" As the three made their way to where the person holding the subclass was, Rinea decided to ask Valyr the question that's been weighing on her mind even before he arrived.

Though she didn't have any right to meddle in the young man's decisions on what subclass to take, she did find it odd that someone like him would choose a slightly niche subclass like Spell Scribe.

In her mind, she thought that Valyr would instead choose the more mainstream subclasses like Alchemist or Rune Carver.

Naturally, with the performance he showed during the Nine Prodigies of Astella tournament, she also felt that it was likely for him to choose subclasses that bolstered his spellcasting might even further.

Yet, against all expectations, the young man chose a subclass that was considered 'well-balanced' in both personal improvement and monetary gain.

"Yep." Valyr nodded in response to Rinea's question, getting an idea of what she was thinking. "Is there a problem with the subclass or anything?"

"That's not it." Rinea shook his head as Dalton faintly smiled with amusement. "I was just surprised that you'd choose such a mundane subclass over the other choices Dalton gave you."

"What can I say?" replied Valyr with a shrug, his mind hastily coming up with an excuse. "The subclass gives me an opportunity to learn more about spells, after all."

"Is that so?" asked Dalton after that, looking at the young man with a knowing smile.

In response, the young man returned a knowing smile of his own, understanding that he wouldn't be able to fool the old man beside him.

Nevertheless, with him not wanting to discuss his reasons behind choosing the subclass any further, both Dalton and Rinea chose to set the topic aside, instead talking about how the rewards from the tournament benefited the guild.

Unsurprisingly, Valyr was immediately left speechless once he heard how many rewards the guild had obtained from the tournament just because of his affiliation.

Thinking about how the Mage Guild only got half of the rewards due to them sharing with the Stelyra clan, the young man unknowingly began to shudder at the thought, only now realizing why the two were so adamant in roping him to their side.

'Now that just makes me fear what kind of rewards the ones affiliated to me would get once the Myriad Prodigies Tournament starts,' thought Valyr to himself, continuing to listen to the two discuss their plans with the rewards.

By the time they were done, the three of them arrived at the northeast corner of the guild, where a man in his late twenties gave them a slight smile.

"Director, Vice Director, you're finally here," said the man, giving both Dalton and Rinea a respectful half-bow.

After that, he shifted his gaze towards Valyr.

"Ataraxia, I presume?"

"That would be." Valyr nodded in return. "And you are?"

"Thaelis," replied the man, extending his hand out for a handshake. "Thaelis Aurgaun."

Hearing those words, the young man's eyes slightly widened in surprise.

Then, after giving Dalton a brief glance, he went ahead and returned the handshake. "I'll be under your tutelage, Thaelis."

"I'll do my utmost to impart the intricacies of the Spell Scribe subclass to you," said Thaelis in return, giving Valyr a kind smile.

After Dalton and Rinea talked with the man for a bit, the two soon left both of them to do their own things, with Dalton wishing Valyr the best of luck on obtaining the subclass.

"So…" Faintly smiling at the old man's well wishes, the young man soon shifted his attention back to Thaelis beside him. "What now?"

"What else?" The man slightly chuckled in amusement.

"Let's get down to business."

Whoosh!

Taking out a few pieces of parchment from a spatial compartment, Thaelis placed the parchments to the side before looking at Valyr with a calm expression.

"Before we begin, what do you know about spell scribes, Ataraxia?"

"They infuse the power of spells into parchments," replied the young man, making use of his memories on the matter. "After that, they add a few more things to it in order for the spells on the parchments to become usable."

"Quite the general explanation, but you're not wrong." Thaelis nodded.

"Although it may not seem like it, there's actually more to being a spell scribe than you would first think."

Swoosh!

Grabbing a piece of parchment beside him, the man affixed the parchment in mid-air with a bit of his mana.

Then, after releasing a bit more of his mana onto his fingertip, he began to use his fingertip as a pen of sorts, scribbling on the parchment with his mana.

"Let's take the basic [Mana Bolt] spell as an example," said Thaelis, his hand speedily inscribing the magic circle that corresponded to the spell.

"As we all know, the [Mana Bolt] spell usually takes on the properties of the mana that comes from the one casting it."

"Aside from that, there are various levels to the spell, with each one containing differing levels of strength."

"Now, Ataraxia." As these words left his mouth, Thaelis had fully inscribed the [Mana Bolt] spell onto the parchment. "Let me ask you a question."

"If we ignore the existence of levels to spells, how can you make sure that the strength of the [Mana Bolt] spell on the parchment remains consistent?"

"After all, there's no point in buying a spell parchment that would show weaker effects for a specific user, right?"

"Hmm…" As he nodded in response to the man's words, Valyr mulled over the question for a bit, giving the subclass he recently began paying attention to a bit more thought.

Then again, with him already having experience controlling three different types of energies, it did not take long for him to understand what Thaelis was trying to get across.

"Mana conversion…" murmured Valyr, causing the man to look at him with surprise and glee written all over his face.

"Exactly," said Thaelis, moving the finished parchment closer for the young man to see. "Although spell scribes do inscribe spells onto parchments, we also have to add a way for the mana being infused into the parchment into standard mana."

"Considering how each spell has different components making up their magic circles, the method in which this mana conversion happens vary from spell to spell," he continued. "However, as long as you master this ability, then you'd be able to call yourself a true spell scribe."

"Now then." Seeing as he'd piqued Valyr's interest with his words, Thaelis took the opportunity to begin his lesson.

"Shall we start?"
