Chapter 833: Chapter 834: The Shawshank Redemption
Gu Zhaohan walked over slowly, “It’s okay, I’ve seen you drunk before.”
With Gu Zhaohan saying this, Xia Yangyang felt even more embarrassed.
For a moment, the atmosphere was quiet; she didn’t know what to say.
But Gu Zhaohan didn’t leave.
Xia Yangyang felt she had to find some topic of conversation.
Xia Yangyang spoke up, “Giving up medicine to take over the family business, are you happier than before?”
Gu Zhaohan leaned against the patio glass door.
His arms were crossed, giving off a distant demeanor.
Gu Zhaohan said, “Not happy, not at all happy.”
Xia Yangyang directly asked, “Then why do you do this?”
If he wasn’t happy, why give up his dream to go into business.
If he wasn’t happy, why take over Jiang Chen and even fight for shares of Shengyuan.
These were things Xia Yangyang couldn’t understand.
Gu Zhaohan’s gaze fell on Xia Yangyang’s face.
Gu Zhaohan spoke slowly and deliberately, “Yangyang, all these years, I’ve always been curious, why you fell for your uncle, why you chose him the first time and still did the same the second time, despite us spending so much time together in the United States, a time I believe wasn’t any less than what you’ve spent with your uncle. Yet, you never really opened up to me. I’m just curious, what in your uncle’s life could attract you that much? I wanted to walk the path he walked, to live the life he lived, to find an answer for myself.”
When Xia Yangyang heard this, she felt a peculiar taste in her heart.
So it was indeed because of her.
Xia Yangyang felt she couldn’t bear the weight of Gu Zhaohan’s life.
Xia Yangyang lowered her head, finding herself unable to meet Gu Zhaohan’s eyes.
Xia Yangyang said, “You really didn’t need to kill my dreams to give up on your own; it’s the least worthwhile thing to do.”
Gu Zhaohan smiled, “It seems you’ve forgotten that when I left the Gu Family, determined to join the Novi team, it was because of you.”
Xia Yangyang was somewhat stunned.
It seemed right, that time in Gu Garden, they talked about dreams in the courtyard.
Gu Zhaohan was hesitant about whether to return to the Xi Family, which would allow him entry into the coveted Novi team.
Back then, everyone from the Gu Family was opposed to it.
Only Xia Yangyang ardently encouraged him.
From that time till now, nearly five years had passed.
Yet she felt as if those five years had slipped by in the blink of an eye, just fluttered past.
So much had happened during that time, that it seemed to blur with time.
But in those blurred memories, so much had changed.
Like Gu Zhaohan standing before her now, he was no longer the pure and aloof youth of five years ago.
Xia Yangyang bitterly smiled, “Gu Zhaohan, I really shouldn’t have appeared in your life.”
Gu Zhaohan spoke, “Yangyang, do you remember when we were freshmen, the university film festival, and everyone was gathered in the auditorium to study the spirit of cinema? Do you remember what movie was being shown?”
Xia Yangyang’s thoughts seemed to drift back to years ago, “I remember, it was ‘The Shawshank Redemption”, it left a deep impression.”
Gu Zhaohan said somberly, “In ‘The Shawshank Redemption’ there’s a line that some birds aren’t meant to be caged, because their feathers are too bright. But when they fly away, your world becomes grayer. To me, Yangyang, you are that bird, pausing in my world for a while, but when you left, my world lost its color. It makes me sad and sore, but at the same time, I’m glad that you were there even for just a brief moment.”
Xia Yangyang looked up, “Gu Zhaohan…”
There was so much Xia Yangyang couldn’t bring herself to say.
What do you think?
