Chapter 80: Chapter 74: Who Are You So Reluctant to Part With?
The person who came was Shen Hanxiu’s special assistant, Yang Zichen. Upon seeing him, Su Nian also felt that nothing good could come from it. The single benefit was that it stopped Xue Qi’s scolding.
“President Shen asked you to come to his office.”
Su Nian was startled; it was exactly what she feared.
“Special Assistant Yang, what’s the matter?”
Yang Zichen habitually pushed his glasses and said, “I’m not sure, you should go up and ask President Shen yourself.”
After saying that, he turned and left, coincidentally bumping into Wei Lan, who just rushed to work. Wei Lan looked up, saw him, and kept apologizing with a blushing face.
Yang Zichen’s expression also hid a hint of embarrassment, as he pushed his glasses and left.
Wei Lan ran in, her face still flushed, fanning herself with her hand as she asked, “Niannian, is my face very red? How embarrassing!”
Su Nian looked at her and smiled, “It’s cute when it’s red.”
“Of course you would tease me!” Wei Lan noticed Xue Qi standing by Su Nian’s position only after approaching and glared at her as she bumped into her, “Good dogs don’t stand in the way! I need to go in, move aside.”
Wei Lan said this after she bumped into Xue Qi, who was wearing high heels and nearly fell over. She stumbled into a desk behind her to steady herself: “Lin Weilan! I wonder how much longer you can feel smug!”
“Hmph! Who laughs last is yet to be determined!”
Xue Qi turned and left, and Su Nian also stood up, saying to Wei Lan, “Keep an eye on things for me, I’ll go up for a bit.”
Wei Lan ambiguously asked her, “Go up? To President Shen’s?”
Hearing this, Xue Qi turned back again, looking at Su Nian with contempt, “Competing with your own aunt for a man, Su Nian, you really have some nerve!”
“What nonsense are you spouting? Our Sister Niannian…”
“Enough, Lanlan, just focus on your own work.” The clean needs no washing; these arguments were meaningless.
Su Nian gathered her things and went to find Shen Hanxiu.
This man was fickle, surely upset about her moving; who knows how angry he might be with her. Maybe he had been irritated somewhere else, and now she was going to be his punching bag.
Feeling uneasy, Su Nian got off the elevator and walked to the president’s office door, her hand raised but hesitating to knock.
However, the man inside the office had already seen her through the unique glass, hesitating outside the door.
Su Nian was dressed rather casually today, in jeans, and shoes that were neither tall nor short made her legs appear even straighter and longer. Her stature wasn’t tall, not even reaching his shoulder when they stood together, but her proportions were great, making her look uniquely charming in whatever she wore.
“Knock, knock—”
The knocking interrupted Shen Han’s unapologetic gaze. He immediately lowered his eyes to look at the documents in his hand, not responding.
The corner of his eye watched her stand by the door, waited a moment, before her slender hand was raised again.
“Knock, knock—”
Still no response from inside, Su Nian wondered, could he not be there?
So, should she slip away? And if asked later, just say she came but no one was inside.
But this man always acted unreasonable and definitely wouldn’t listen to her explanations.
Or should she wait inside?
Just the thought gave her goosebumps…
While tangled in thought, the receptionist behind her spoke up, “Ms. Su, just go in. President Shen is there.”
There? He’s there and ignoring people?!
Su Nian tried pushing the door open and immediately saw the man, seated at his desk, not even lifting his head upon her entrance.
So arrogant, like a big shot! Is this how all bosses are?
Inside, Su Nian cursed Shen Han a thousand times but still politely approached within two meters from his desk and said, “President Shen, you wanted to see me?”
Shen Han then lazily lifted his eyelids to glance at her, asking, “What?”
Su Nian thought he hadn’t heard her because he was too focused, so she repeated herself. The man dismissively lowered his head, acting as if he was very busy, simultaneously signing documents while he spoke lightly, “Too far, can’t hear clearly.”
Su Nian really wanted to swear! And she thought he was all serious! Just the same old nonsense!
Su Nian took a step forward and raised her voice, “I’m asking what you wanted by calling for me!”
“How comfortable is the new house?”
Watching him pretend to be serious, Su Nian was furious yet had nowhere to vent, gritting her teeth she replied, “Very comfortable, thank you for your concern, President Shen. If there’s nothing else, I’ll be leaving.”
Shen Han put down his pen and looked at her turning away, speaking unhurriedly, “Did I say you could go?”
Su Nian turned back impatiently, looking at him.
Shen Han enjoyed the sight of her annoyed yet helpless expression, “What’s with that look? Haven’t you read the company’s regulations? Where’s the smile?”
Su Nian clenched her teeth but still forced a smile.
She never knew this old man could be so vile!
Shen Hanxiu felt content inside, but still kept a stern face: “Tomorrow morning at nine o’clock, we’ll set out for Hai City on a week-long business trip. Go home today to prepare your things, and wait for a call at home tomorrow morning.”
Su Nian’s smile instantly vanished, if this were ancient times, being oppressed like this would be cause for a revolt!
Su Nian wanted to say this was not within the scope of her duties, but Shen Hanxiu would surely counter: Isn’t it the boss who decides what the employees do?
Arguing with him was a waste of breath, so Su Nian said nothing, but the sound of the door slamming as she turned to leave betrayed her irritation.
Shen Hanxiu’s thick brows lifted slightly, softening his resolute expression.
Wei Lan saw her come down with a long face and whispered, “What’s wrong, Sister Nian’nian? Did President Shen scold you?”
“No, I have to go on a business trip tomorrow and I’m annoyed about who will take care of the kids.”
“Wow, a business trip?! Who are you going with? President Shen?”
“Not just him… A lot of people are going.”
Wei Lan giggled with an “I understand” look and then said to Su Nian, “Sister Nian’nian, if you’re okay with it, I can stay at your place during your trip. I may not know much, but it’s better to have someone there than no one at all.”
Su Nian, as if finding a savior, said, “Lanlan, I was right about you!”
“Hehe, when you’re gone, the two little treasures will get cozy with me.”
Su Nian laughed and said, “I’d be glad to, wishing you would take them, they’re such a handful.”
“Ah, but that smile doesn’t look like they’re ‘such a handful’ to you,” jested Wei Lan. “Tell me during lunch what your little treasures like so I know how to handle them.”
Su Nian nodded with a smile.
Back at her previous company, there were also times when she had to travel for work. After her child was weaned, it was often Liang Yizhou, Xiao Lan, and President Chen who helped her with the kids, making her feel a bit guilty for shirking her motherly duties.
She told Wei Lan a lot at lunch, mostly about Su Zhen’s temperament. Su Bao was sensible and didn’t require much supervision. That evening, she directly had Wei Lan go to her house for a “trial run.” Su Zhen became acquainted with her soon, affectionately calling her Sister Lanlan, delighting Wei Lan no end.
She also informed Liang Yizhou about the trip. He reassured her to go on the trip with peace of mind and that he would take care of the kids, leaving Su Nian grateful but unsure how to express it.
That night, she packed several sets of her usual work clothes, and after dropping off the kids at school the next day, she waited for the call at home alone.
Around eight-thirty, Arab numerals appeared on her phone screen.
Despite having not informed him of her new address, he precisely parked his car under her apartment building.
There was only him in the car. Su Nian thought that the trip couldn’t just involve the two of them. As a junior accountant, she knew little, and surely he should have brought a couple of special assistants.
Shen Hanxiu considerately got out of the car, took her suitcase and put it in the trunk, adding, “I’ve informed Yang Zichen. He’ll take care of the kids.”
Su Nian opened the rear door and sat down while refusing, “No need, someone is looking after them.”
Shen Hanxiu stood beside the door and looked down at her, his face appearing much gentler than usual in the light, but his words weren’t as warm, “Someone’s looking after them? That Leng Xifan?”
Su Nian was taken aback. Leng Xifan? Suddenly she realized that he meant Liang Yizhou… Cold porridge…
This old man is so childish! Giving such nicknames!
While Su Nian was reacting, Shen Hanxiu already closed the car door, rounded to the driver’s side, and while starting the car said, “I’ve arranged everything, I trust Yang Zichen to take good care of them.”
Having more than one person watching the kids wasn’t a bad thing, so Su Nian didn’t voice any objections.
It took ten minutes by car to reach the airport, and there was already someone waiting for them, “President Shen, the plane will take off in twenty minutes.”
Shen Hanxiu responded with a calm “Mhm,” then instructed the person to check in the luggage and led Su Nian to the entrance.
While going through security, Su Nian looked around before and behind, not seeing any extra people. Could it really be just the two of them?!
“What are you looking for?” Shen Hanxiu asked as he noticed her looking all around.
Su Nian turned back, pretending not to hear.
With a calm face but a frantic heart, just the two of them on a business trip for a week, the thought of it was unbearable no matter how she looked at it. Moreover, could this be his deliberate method to separate her from Su Zhen and Su Bao?
He also instructed Yang Zichen, but was it really to help look after the kids or was there an ulterior motive?
Standing beside Shen Hanxiu, Su Nian looked up, only seeing his profile which seemed calm and not hiding any untold secrets.
For safety’s sake, Su Nian stepped back behind Shen Hanxiu, out of his sight, and sent a text to Liang Yizhou, “The kids are your responsibility, make sure to pick them up from school yourself.”
The reply came almost immediately after the text, a short ping: Don’t worry, take good care of yourself.
“Who are you so reluctant to part from?”
Su Nian quickly turned off her phone screen, pocketing her phone while replying, “None of your business.”
Shen Hanxiu turned and pulled her to stand in front of him, just in time for Su Nian’an’s security check.
The plane took off promptly, and their seats were adjacent.
Su Nian’s seat was not by the window, but Shen Hanxiu directly pushed her in.
Su Nian didn’t bother with the formalities and didn’t want to interact too much with him, so from the moment she boarded the plane, she turned to look outside the window.
The flight from Mai City to Hai City was about five hours. She had been to that city once with Shen Han before, on a trip he rewarded her with after her university entrance exams. She said she loved the city connected to the ocean, so he took her there.
There was no conversation on the plane, Shen Hanxiu concentrated on the newspaper without bothering Su Nian inside.
It had been quite some time, halfway through the trip, when suddenly she heard a “bang.”
What do you think?
