Chapter 82: What happened on August 2?
Chen Xu pressed the switch beside him, dropped down into the passageway below, and escaped the weapon platform that was being continuously corroded by the Acid Ant Beast’s bodily fluids.
He had only run a few steps when he heard a sizzling sound behind him. Turning around, he saw green viscous fluid dripping down from above, quickly corroding a hole in the passageway floor.
“Good thing I ran fast.”
He felt relieved for a moment when he suddenly felt a burning sensation on his left forearm. Looking down, he saw several drops of the green viscous fluid on his protective suit, which had already burned several small holes in it.
To not hinder his speed, he hadn’t worn the external mechanical arm but donned an S01-provided protective suit made of high-strength material. He had tested it with a handgun. Within three meters, bullets couldn’t penetrate it. Its bulletproof capability was exceptionally impressive.
And yet it had been burned through by just a few drops of fluid.
He quickly took off his protective clothing, grabbed the water he carried with him, unscrewed the cap, and poured it over his left forearm. Then he opened the portable medical kit, took out the antiseptic, poured it on the wound, and wrapped it with gauze, binding it tightly.
After giving himself rudimentary first aid, he spoke into his headset, “Send over the live monitor from above.”
“Yes,” came the response from 2003 through the headset.
In his glasses, the monitor from above instantly appeared. He saw several Acid Ant Beasts gathered in front of the door, waving their foreclaws, sending sparks flying as they scratched at the door.
Behind them, more Acid Ant Beasts continued to converge.
He leaned against the wall and walked forward, asking, “How many more beasts are above?”
“Three hundred and nine,” came the reply.
“Notify me immediately if there’s any change.”
He ended the communication, calculating the time.
S01 should be arriving soon, and Yang Jinxia, according to the plan, would also make her way here as quickly as possible. Then, the three of them would shoot at the beasts from three directions, forming a crossfire.
The key was whether the Acid Ant Beasts would break through the door first, or if they could kill all the beasts before that happened.
The shelter’s door was constructed to the highest standard, with a thickness of fifty centimeters, and the material was the strongest alloy available. It would take the Acid Ant Beasts more than a moment to corrode through it with their bodily fluids.
They had enough time.
It took Chen Xu nearly ten seconds to reach the designated weapon platform. He had just climbed up when he heard gunfire from outside. Knowing that S01 was in position, he felt a certainty in his heart.
He sat down, opened the scope, aimed at the beasts farther from the door, and opened fire.
Bang, bang, bang…
In an instant, the clustered Acid Ant Beasts were torn apart, scattering blood and flesh.
After another dozen seconds, another weapon platform opened fire. Yang Jinxia had joined the battle earlier than planned.
The three high-energy laser guns wove deadly beams of light. In less than half a minute, the densely packed crowd of beasts had nearly halved.
The firing from S01’s side stopped first, followed by a few seconds later from Yang Jinxia’s side.
Only Chen Xu, having intentionally reduced the shooting frequency earlier to extend the life of the barrel, was prepared for such a lull in fire.
The Acid Ant Beasts responded quickly, launching a counterattack and splitting into three groups, each heading in the direction of the gunfire.
Along the way, any weapon platform encountered by the beasts saw one at least Acid Ant Beast leap onto it, tearing open the outer alloy layer and destroying the weapons inside.
Chen Xu kept firing, taking down the leading Acid Ant Beasts, while feeling an ominous sense. These beasts seemed to possess certain intelligence, recognizing the source of danger and even understanding the need to destroy the weapon platforms.
The group noticed that he was still firing and suddenly increased the number of Acid Ant Beasts joining that assault, putting immense pressure on him. He couldn’t afford to worry about the other two directions anymore.
Bang, bang, bang…
After a series of about ten shots, a barrel damage alert finally appeared in the scope.
Without hesitation, he toggled the switch and jumped off into the passageway, rushing towards the predetermined location. Just as he rounded a corner, he heard gunfire from the ground.
A few seconds later, another burst of gunfire sounded.
He breathed a sigh of relief; so far, everything was still going smoothly.
“Be advised, all Acid Ant Beasts have abandoned the door and are charging at you.” Suddenly, an alarm from 2003 came through the headset.
Chen Xu’s gaze turned sharp; these Acid Ant Beasts really knew to first eliminate the biggest threat before trying to break through the door. Their intelligence was not low at all.
“How many of them are left?”
“About one hundred twenty.”
Chen Xu received the answer as he reached the bottom of the weapon platform. He opened the door and climbed up.
As he opened the scope, Chen Xu quickly made out the situation before him: two groups of Acid Ant Beasts were desperately pouncing toward the two laser-firing weapons platforms.
The group targeting S01 was larger, clearly aware that the threat here was greater.
The number of creatures on Yang Jinxia’s side was smaller, but the beasts were closing in faster because of her poor marksmanship and low hit rate.
He immediately concluded that in just another four or five seconds, both locations would be overrun by the numerous Acid Ant Beasts.
Could he only save one?
Sweat broke out on his forehead, and without a moment’s hesitation, he began shooting, targeting and killing the fastest beasts approaching Yang Jinxia.
“Sorry.”
He could only say to the robot in his heart.
Noticing that he was also firing, some scattered Acid Ant Beasts quickly gathered and charged toward him.
“2003, have Sister Xia retreat first.”
He shouted to control center to prevent being distracted later.
Two seconds later, the firing stopped on Yang Jinxia’s side,
and he turned his gun to shoot at the Acid Ant Beasts rushing toward him. As he turned, he thought he saw S01’s weapons platform being overrun by several beasts.
But at that moment, he couldn’t afford to worry about it. More and more beasts were pouring toward him, and he dared not even blink as he continuously pressed the firing button, killing the encroaching creatures.
His gun must have fired countless lasers when suddenly, with a hiss, a prompt appeared before the scope.
By this time, only two Acid Ant Beasts were left alive in front of him, no more than two meters away.
“Damn.”
He cursed under his breath, flipping the switch, and dropped down.
Just then, the alloy plate banged loudly as it was torn open. Looking up, he saw a larger Acid Ant Beast.
Time seemed to freeze, and his face was reflected in its enormous compound eyes.
The seat swiftly repositioned itself, blocking their line of sight.
Bang.
Chen Xu landed on a soft cushion.
At the same time, a lance-like foreclaw pierced through the cabin door, reaching for him, mere centimeters from his head, scaring the life out of him.
“Chen Xu, catch the gun.”
Yang Jinxia’s voice came from behind him; he turned and caught the rifle thrown to him.
At this moment, the head of the Acid Ant Beast squeezed through the cabin door, its massive jaws opening and emitting an unpleasant screech.
“Die.” Chen Xu aimed at its compound eye and pulled the trigger without hesitation.
Its head exploded, showering him with sticky fluids.
“In the end, it was all for naught.”
He looked down at his body, half-covered in goo, feeling frustrated, not expecting the first level to be so tough, and not making it through the first challenge.
Then, he glared fiercely at the still-twitching Acid Ant Beast, vowing that if he could enter this game again, he would take it out first.
“Chen Xu!”
Yang Jinxia finally rushed over and dragged him to safety.
“Too bad, in the end, I couldn’t join you…” Chen Xu felt a deep sense of unwillingness, but as he was speaking, he started to cough up blood, and slowly, his consciousness began to fade.
And then, he sank into total darkness.
…
“Congratulations on completing the dream task ‘Beast Invasion,’ having survived one hundred eighty days. The difficulty level of this dream was one. We are now processing your score.”
When Chen Xu regained consciousness, he heard that familiar voice. Although he was still annoyed, something suddenly felt off.
Eh? Didn’t I fail?
What’s going on?
He was completely baffled.
What do you think?
