Chapter 897: Ten Seconds of Terror
Compared to the previous Xiao Yue Er, the manipulated “Xiao Yue Er” appeared much more intelligent… However, this heightened intelligence became a weakness that Ling Mo exploited.
A carefully planned ambush allowed her to conclude that this low-level zombie before her had the capability to attack her and could directly harm the entity parasitizing inside her. With the insulated box monster in her possession, she would naturally choose to use it for the assault while positioning herself as auxiliary combat support to avoid direct confrontation…
This simple “tactic” is a common approach among Senior Zombies. But “Xiao Yue Er” could hardly have imagined that this conventional strategy would become one of the opportunities Ling Mo had created for himself…
“It worked! And her weakness is…”
An intensely dangerous feeling emanated from above, yet Ling Mo’s eyes remained tightly fixed on the approaching “Xiao Yue Er.”
“Hahaha, this time I’ll definitely defeat you! Once I kill this bug, I’ll go directly to find your main body! It’s similar with humans and zombies, isn’t it? Just eliminate the competitors, and you can live better…,” “Xiao Yue Er” shouted with a twisted expression. “You’re the same, aren’t you here to consume me? I did nothing wrong… I did nothing wrong!”
“Plop!”
As the mucus dripped down from above, the part in Ling Mo’s hand was simultaneously thrown.
“Xiao Yue Er” easily dodged her head aside, laughing, “It’s useless! Do you think the same method will work a second time? Haha… Ha…”
Before finishing her sentence, “Xiao Yue Er’s” face suddenly froze. Her bizarre and exaggerated smile slowly faded. Her actions came to an abrupt halt, and she began making sounds from her throat as if someone were choking her: “Ha… Ha…”
“Xiao Yue Er” raised her hand to clutch her neck. With weakened knees, she collapsed to the ground, staring blankly at Ling Mo: “No… Don’t… I don’t… I don’t want to…”
“Poof!”
Ling Mo’s Zombie Puppet was thrown to the side, another fresh, blood-soaked wound tearing across its back. Gripping the edge of a wooden crate, Ling Mo pulled himself up, spat out a mouthful of bloody spit, and turned his eyes toward the spot where he had just been standing.
The insulated box monster was crouching there now, its pair of emotionless, expressionless eyes staring straight at him.
“Just as I thought, no further movement for now! But…” Ling Mo cast a wary glance at it. While the creature hadn’t made a move towards him yet, the sense of danger it exuded was still palpably intense. If he provoked it by getting too close, it would undoubtedly lash out with an attack…
“This thing…”
Now that it was out of the insulated box, the monster’s entire form became much clearer.
Its body appeared slightly larger than that of a normal human infant. Its limbs were slender, but they were covered in bone spurs and tipped with razor-sharp claws. Supporting such a disproportionally large head, its body structure looked not just unbalanced but also cumbersome. It moved entirely on all fours, though it was currently in a crouched position.
In its mouth was a long, barbed tongue that looked like an array of hooked blades. Each time it lashed out, it flew like a deadly projectile, and the wound on the Zombie Puppet’s abdomen was undoubtedly caused by this. ℝΑ₦ȫ𝔟Ε𝐬
Ling Mo also noticed that the creature’s body was still coated in liquid from the insulated box, with its legs tucked under itself. It was unmistakably in an underdeveloped state, not yet fully formed.
“Despite the heavy mutations, I can still see the resemblance to those creatures in the gestation pods. And it’s retained a basic humanoid shape… But the question is-did someone specifically engineer these things, or is this actually one of her offspring? If they are her offspring, perhaps she’s like certain wild creatures, unable to independently give birth to her young? Is that why they have gestation pods and these insulated boxes…” Ling Mo thought as his gaze shifted toward Xiao Yue Er.
If his speculation was accurate… then just what kind of variation must have taken place within the womb of that shadowy mastermind? What kind of evolution could result in something like this?!
To be honest, he didn’t really want to keep imagining it…
At this moment, “Xiao Yue Er” was clutching her head and wailing, shaking it violently while shouting, “Stop thinking! I don’t want to think! Get out, all of you! Get out of my head!”
“Whew, her reaction is even more intense than I expected.”
Ling Mo stood in place, taking a couple of deep breaths and shaking his head slightly.
In that instant, he had simultaneously used the protective layer and psychic interference. Although the energy consumption wasn’t too significant, it was a tremendous test of the psychic link between him and the Zombie Puppet. Yet, with incredible focus, he managed to pull it off…
“Xiao Yue Er has evolved to possess considerable intelligence and has been taken over by the parasitizing entity… Her psychic light cluster is in a rather chaotic state, compounded by lingering human memories, emotions, and reactions… Instead of focusing on the insulated box-derived monster that can’t be attacked, it’s better to directly disrupt the controller’s psychic power! Kill two birds with one stone!”
“I bet right!”
Ling Mo opened his palm and slowly walked forward.
Now, only this derived monster remains…@@novelbin@@
“Hiss…”
The monster’s head moved slightly, and its tongue shot out immediately.
“Shh, don’t move…”
Ling Mo approached slowly, raising an arm and waving it side to side.
This reckless action immediately caught the monster’s attention, and just as the monster vanished, the Zombie Puppet’s eyes turned vacant…
“Poof!”
A large spray of blood splattered in front of Ling Mo, as if hitting an invisible glass, and flowed down through the air.
Simultaneously, a piercing scream echoed nearby, followed by four bloody marks appearing on a distant wall. These marks moved rapidly, while Ling Mo stood still, surrounded by the constant thudding sounds.
“So fast…”
Ling Mo clenched his fists, his eyes unblinking as he watched his surroundings. The area around him was splattered with blood, yet the derived monster’s attacks showed no sign of stopping.
“If this thing were allowed to fully mature, would psychic tentacles at this level of materialization even be able to pierce its skin?” Ling Mo couldn’t help but feel his scalp tingle as the thought crossed his mind.
For a creature like this, firearms were entirely ineffective. Even the best marksmanship couldn’t keep up with the speed of this little monster. Perhaps only Ye Lian could…
“Ye Lian would definitely be able to handle it. Besides her eyes, she can track it using its scent. No… to be precise, only she can. She can use the scent to track its location and her kaleidoscope eyes to pinpoint it… but in such a complex environment…”
In the brief span of one or two seconds, Ling Mo felt like he’d been struck by more than a hundred attacks. At the moment, he resembled nothing less than a hedgehog-every attack from the derived monster inflicted damage on him. Even so, Ling Mo wasn’t faring too well himself. Each impact caused the Zombie Puppet’s resistance to intensify, especially when his psychic power was drained for even a split second, weakening the psychic link at its most critical moments…
This nerve-wracking assault dragged on for three full seconds before Ling Mo couldn’t help but let out a low roar.
“The wounds on your body should be piling up by now!”
He hadn’t expected to eliminate the derived monster using this method, but…
“Over here!”
When the gust of wind attacked from the side again, Ling Mo-who had been standing completely still-suddenly turned his head and shot out his hand in a swift motion. At the same time, several invisible psychic tentacles coiled around his arm, extending like sharp claws as they lunged toward the subtle wisp of air.
“Bang!”
The tentacles shattered, and a searing pain immediately shot through Ling Mo’s arm. His entire body was yanked down to the ground and swiftly dragged across the floor. However, as he was being pulled away, he managed to hook a wooden crate with his toes, slowing the momentum of his movement.
“Psychic probe, the scent of blood, air currents… Using all three together, and I still couldn’t get hold of you!”
Ling Mo clenched his fingers tightly, a wild glint flashing in his eyes. With a forceful tug, he abruptly pulled back his arm.
“Hisssss!”
The derived monster, its body drenched in blood, squirmed violently as it approached Ling Mo. It suddenly opened its gaping maw and lunged straight toward the Zombie Puppet’s head.
However, just as it struck, a sudden burst of blood sprayed violently from its mouth!
“Splurt!”
Blood splattered across Ling Mo’s face as the derived monster’s wide-open maw slammed directly into the Zombie Puppet’s face.
A few seconds later, he forcefully yanked the now-limp derived monster off and collapsed onto the ground, gasping for air.
“That was close… Just relying on the Zombie Puppet really isn’t enough after all…”
If he hadn’t reacted in time and used his psychic tentacles, he might have been forced to grudgingly search for another Zombie Puppet by now. And by the time he returned here, the situation likely would have already changed-or worse, he might not even have had the chance to make it back at all…
“Huff…”
Supporting himself as he stood, Ling Mo glanced down to inspect the Zombie Puppet’s injuries. What he saw left him momentarily speechless.
One arm was completely ruined, while the other was a bloody mess, with fractures visible in several fingers. Combined with the wounds on its abdomen and back, this body was practically falling apart.
“And that’s with me using psychic power…” Ling Mo thought, the corner of his eye twitching. “If this had been my main body… forget it. That mental image is too gruesome-I’d rather not imagine it.”
For injuries that would be fatal to a human, a zombie could still, just barely, carry on.
“No way, it’s still not dead?” Ling Mo had just bent down to pick up the derived monster’s corpse when he noticed its limbs twitching faintly.
“You’ve gotta be kidding me! I literally stabbed its brain, didn’t I?! How can an infant monster be this resilient? This is insane! Wait… something’s not right…”
Ling Mo turned his gaze toward Xiao Yue Er and gave the derived monster a shake.
It had already been ten seconds since she was struck…
What do you think?
