Chapter 24: Chapter 24: Want to Study at University? Get Married First Chapter 24: Chapter 24: Want to Study at University? Get Married First The village chief even asked him why he was in such a hurry to find Lu Youxi.
Lu Zhenguo was not someone who could tell lies, so he could only stammer as he told the village chief about Lu Youxi’s admission to Jing University.
Well, that was something. Upon hearing that Hexing Village had produced another high-caliber student who got into Jing University, the village chief was overjoyed and immediately announced the good news through the village broadcast system.
Lu Zhenguo didn’t find Lu Youxi, and so he returned from the village chief’s house.
“Youxi, where did you just go?” Lu Zhenguo saw Lu Youxi coming towards him and hurried over to ask.
“I had someone keep my admission notice safe for me.” Lu Youxi didn’t try to conceal her lack of trust in her own family.
Lu Zhenguo said, somewhat unhappily, “Such an important document, and you don’t keep it at home but give it to someone else to look after?”
“I think it’s safer to put it with someone else than at home,” Lu Youxi said without any hesitation.
“What are you talking about! Who in our family would steal your admission notice?” Lu Zhenguo said, displeased. “You’ve gotten into Jing University, and we are all happy for you. Youxi, by saying this, you really chill the hearts of the whole family.”
“You know whether or not grandpa and grandma want me to go to university,” Lu Youxi said, not wanting to linger on the subject, and then asked, “Where did you just go?”
This time, Lu Zhenguo was at a loss for words again.
Lu Youxi saw the direction Lu Zhenguo had come from and her lips curved in a mocking smile, “You went to the village chief’s house?”
Lu Youxi laughed mockingly, “Do you think I went to the village chief’s house to complain?”
Lu Zhenguo hung his head and averted his eyes, unable to look directly at Lu Youxi.
He felt guilty for suspecting Lu Youxi with ill intentions and for wronging her.
Lu Youxi hadn’t gone to complain to the village chief at all.
Lu Youxi just laughed, said nothing more, and turned to head home.
Feeling guilty, Lu Zhenguo couldn’t bring himself to ask her where she had hidden the admission notice.

Thanks to the village chief and Aunts Lin and Liu, the whole village now knew that Lu Youxi had been accepted into Jing University.
The Lu Family’s elders couldn’t back out now even if they wanted to.
There were so many eyes in the village watching them.
Now, whenever the Lu Family’s elders went out and met villagers, they would be congratulated.
Having two Jing University high-caliber students was like burning incense at their doorstep.
That day, Lu Zhenjia took the opportunity to go see the Lu Family’s elders while Lu Zhenguo and Liu Yushu were out working in the fields.
“Mom, Dad,” Lu Zhenjia burst in anxiously, looking around, “Where’s that girl Lu Youxi?”
“She went to work in the fields with your older brother,” Old Madam Lu replied. “What do you want with her?”
“That damn girl is so shameless!” Lu Zhenjia spat out angrily.
“What’s going on?” Old Madam Lu’s face fell immediately upon hearing it was about Lu Youxi.
“Haven’t you been out recently?” Lu Zhenjia feigned ignorance with a look of astonishment.
He knew all too well just how unreasonable and stubborn the Lu family’s old couple were.
But, since they were older, he couldn’t show his impatience with them. One wrong move, and they would lie down in front of you, ready to accuse you of harming them—who could stand that!
So, the villagers’ dissatisfaction with the Lu family elders was talked about behind their backs, but never to their face.
One extra word, and Old Madam Lu would clutch her chest and claim you gave her heart disease.
Naturally, no one dared to gossip in front of the Lu Family’s elders.
Even if they wanted to see the Lu family’s joke, they would share it with someone else instead of with the elders.
“I did go out for a few walks,” Old Madam Lu replied impatiently, “but I haven’t heard anything. What is it? Just tell me quickly!”
Lu Zhenjia looked around and back at the yard outside the door before lowering his voice to tell the Lu Family’s elders, “Everyone is saying that Lu Youxi is getting too cozy with that Xu Mai brought by Old Madam Xu, sloppy and underhanded.”
“What?!” Old Master Lu asked loudly, “Who said that?”
“It was Old Wang’s daughter who works in the milk tea shop in town, Xiao Fen,” Lu Zhenjia said. “She saw Lu Youxi go to Old Madam Xu’s house to look for Xu Mai.”
“Old Madam Xu wasn’t home at the time. Xu Mai let Lu Youxi in and specifically closed the courtyard gate,” Lu Zhenjia continued with serious implication. “Who closes doors in our village if not disciplining children? What good could they be up to?”
“Old Madam Xu wasn’t home, and it was just Xu Mai and Lu Youxi, two young people alone, at the prime of their years, behind closed doors,” Lu Zhenjia clicked his tongue. “Moreover, Xu Mai had no shirt on at that time! So bold, under everyone’s nose, without any regard… ugh…”
“I’m thinking, does Lu Youxi feel that since she got into Jing University, no one can reign her in? Our village is small, everyone knows each other, any trivial family matter becomes common knowledge. She dares to do something this disgraceful, is she planning never to come back? Otherwise, why would she dare?”
Lu Zhenjia said, then suddenly hissed, as if he had just realized something, “Mom, Dad, don’t tell me that girl Lu Youxi is really planning to use going to university as a chance to never come back?”
“Even though a married daughter is like spilled water, that should wait until she actually gets married! Right now, she is still part of our family!” Lu Zhenjia’s small triangular eyes twinkled with cunning as he spoke.
“She wouldn’t dare!” Old Master Lu slammed his hand on the table furiously.
“Why wouldn’t she dare?” Seeing his words had an effect, Lu Zhenjia couldn’t hide his glee, which showed on his face. He went on, “Once she goes to university in Jing University, living in the Imperial Capital, who can control her? High as the sky for birds to fly! Then who will know what she’s up to in the Imperial Capital?”
“Besides, Lu Youxi has always been very attentive and ambitious. Seeing the splendor of a big city, her heart will grow wilder, how could she be content to come back? She might even take matters into her own hands and secretly get married in the Imperial Capital,” Lu Zhenjia scoffed. “Is there anything she wouldn’t dare?”
“By then, marrying whoever she wants, we certainly won’t have a say,” Lu Zhenjia said in a quieter voice. “We couldn’t even make her come back.”
“Mom, Dad, right now Lu Youxi is still part of our family, and she should listen to our decisions. If she gets married in the city, we won’t be able to control her anymore,” Lu Zhenjia urged as he saw the Lu Family’s elders deep in thought.
“Besides, the man she finds in the city could be anybody; how could we rest easy?” He added.
“You make sense,” Old Madam Lu nodded.
“City folks are savvy. They might even look down on her for coming up from a rural area. By then, we wouldn’t even get a decent dowry,” Lu Zhenjia mentioned dowry, and the Lu Family’s elders’ expressions immediately changed.
What do you think?
