Chapter 32 - 32 32 Foolish Hus Parents Bring a Matchmaker
Chapter 32: Chapter 32: Foolish Hu’s Parents Bring a Matchmaker and a Dowry to Your House Chapter 32: Chapter 32: Foolish Hu’s Parents Bring a Matchmaker and a Dowry to Your House Zhou Shuyan couldn’t come up with that much money, and since Lu Youxi was pregnant again, finding another sucker to marry her was next to impossible; she had no choice but to marry Foolish Hu.
At this moment, Lu Youxi didn’t take Ge Qiangzhuang’s reaction seriously.
After all, the scandalous rumors of her affair with Zhou Shuyan were spreading like wildfire throughout Hexing Village.
Seeing the two of them walking together, Ge Qiangzhuang’s reaction seemed to be within expectation.
However, after walking only a short distance farther, she ran into her neighbor, Aunt Liu.
Aunt Liu, seeing her walking with Zhou Shuyan, was also taken aback but didn’t harbor the same ill will as Ge Qiangzhuang, merely expressing some surprise.
But Aunt Liu’s expression was quickly replaced by urgency.
She dashed toward Lu Youxi, grabbed her hand, and said frantically, “Youxi, where have you been running off to? Hurry back home and check on things!”
Then Aunt Liu glanced at Zhou Shuyan, paused for a couple of seconds, “Take Xu Mai with you. He might be able to help when you get there.”
“What’s happened at home?” From what Aunt Liu was saying, it seemed related to her rather than a problem with her elders.
Aunt Liu then remembered, realizing by the direction Lu Youxi had come from, she must have just returned to the village and didn’t know what had happened at home.
Her cryptic words no wonder left Lu Youxi puzzled.
“Your grandparents and second uncle even talked to you about Foolish Hu from the next village,” Aunt Liu continued, “Now Foolish Hu’s father and mother are at your house with the matchmaker and a dowry.”
Hearing it was this matter, Lu Youxi was not in a hurry at all.
After all, she had already gotten her marriage certificate; what could Lu Family’s elders do to her?
Lu Youxi was more concerned about another matter, “Where are my parents?”
“Your father and mother are working in the fields; they probably don’t know about this.” Aunt Liu wasn’t certain, but she felt that Lu Zhenguo and his wife were decent people who, despite their naivete, wouldn’t agree to throw Lu Youxi into the fire pit of Foolish Hu’s household.
And Aunt Liu didn’t have the heart to mention any other possibility to Lu Youxi.
“I had Aunt Lin go to the fields to call your parents. I originally planned to look for the village chief, but I ran into you first,” Aunt Liu explained.
Lu Youxi expressed gratitude, “Aunt Liu, thank you.”
“It’s nothing!” Aunt Liu stamped her foot, “When something like this happens, anyone with a little conscience would get involved!”
Even Aunt Lin, who usually loved to gossip, when she saw Lu Youxi faced with such an outrageous situation, set everything aside to find Lu Zhenguo and his wife in the fields.
It was just incomprehensible what the Lu Family’s elders were thinking!
Even if they really didn’t like their granddaughter, Lu Youxi, they shouldn’t push the girl into a blazing inferno!
And that Lu Zhenjia, he wasn’t up to any good either!
“Quick, get back home!” Aunt Liu urged Lu Youxi.
Lu Youxi nodded, “Aunt Liu, please take the trouble to find the village chief.”
“Of course!” Aunt Liu agreed, nodding, “We must have the village chief stand up for you! Even if they are your grandparents, they can’t treat their own granddaughter like that. Our village might be poor, but we don’t sell off our daughters like that!”
So Lu Youxi, accompanied by Zhou Shuyan, headed for Lu Family’s house, while Aunt Liu hurried off in search of the village chief.
When Lu Youxi and Zhou Shuyan arrived at the Lu Family’s doorway, they saw quite a crowd of villagers and many children gathered, there to watch the excitement.
After all, it’s not every day you see a family marry off their daughter to a simpleton.
Some children, oblivious to the gravity of the situation, held sticks and branches, jumping up and down, chanting, “Marrying a simpleton! Marrying a simpleton!”
“Really can’t figure out what the Lu Family is thinking, wanting to marry their daughter to a simpleton.”
“The Lu Family’s old man and his wife are famously biased towards sons and careless about their granddaughter’s happiness.”
“Those two old folks probably sold Lu Youxi for a good price.”
“Sure, a daughter is considered water splashed out, but this is just too much.”
Many families here treated their daughters and sons differently.
But none went to such extremes as the Lu Family’s elders.
“Still, hasn’t Lu Youxi gotten into university? What’s that university called again?”
“Jing University! The number one institution in Hua Country, she got into the same university as Lu Youbang.”
“With such a promising daughter, why the rush to marry her off? Going out to study, she’ll be a university student, and not just any but from the leading university in Hua Country. It’s not just about pride; she’ll find a good job later, earn more money, provide for her retirement—why the haste to marry her off?”
“Hey! Considering the way those two old folks from the Lu Family treat Lu Youxi, do you think she will provide for them in their old age once she becomes successful?”
“What a sin!”
“They probably figure since Lu Youxi would bring them no benefit even if she makes something of herself, they might as well cash in on her while she’s still in the village, sell her to Foolish Hu’s family, and make a tidy sum.”
“Those two old folks are really blinded by money.”
“Whoa, even you can’t stand to watch; goes to show they’ve really gone too far.”
“What do you mean ‘even I can’t stand to watch’?” A man wearing a shabby tank top, unkempt and reeking of alcohol, sounded displeased upon hearing this.
The previous speaker didn’t continue.
Everyone knows this man lives off his hardworking wife and barely contributes anything, spending any money he gets on alcohol and ignoring his children.
But even he thought the Lu Family’s elders had gone too far, which said a lot.
However, this man was a notorious troublemaker in the village, and most people preferred to steer clear of him.
So after his retort, the other villager didn’t continue, avoiding any further trouble.
Under normal circumstances, this man would have made a big fuss, but now the commotion at the Lu Family’s seemed far more intriguing, distracting him from any immediate quarreling.
At that moment, a skinny, stooped man with tiny eyes and a sharp chin, who looked rather sleazy, suddenly commented, “We all think that, no matter how much you dislike Lu Youxi, you wouldn’t push a child into a pit of fire. It couldn’t be because Lu Youxi did something disgraceful, forcing the Lu Family to hasten her marriage, could it?”
Some busybodies blinked and picked up on this, “Isn’t there a recent rumor about Lu Youxi and that Xu Mai? Xiao Fen was adamant she saw Lu Youxi enter Old Madam Xu’s house, and Xu Mai even closed the door. Young and spirited, who knows what they might have done inside.”
“Could she be carrying already?” someone followed up.
“With such commotion, what’s going on?” Suddenly, a crisp voice rang out from the back of the crowd.
“That voice sounds familiar.”
“Of course, it’s familiar, it’s Lu Youxi!” someone said awkwardly.
What do you think?
