Chapter 117: Chapter 116 Illusion

After much hesitation, Shao Zifeng still took a special trip to the Huawei store and bought two of the latest foldable phones, and then topped up Qiqi’s mobile phone with 1000 yuan.

He had already promised to buy her a new phone. It was forgivable to forget due to the busy training days, but it would be a true breach of promise if he didn’t buy one after being reminded by Qiqi.

Upon leaving the store and looking at the shopping bag in his hand, Qiqi surely wouldn’t keep sulking at him now.

Shopping had delayed him, and by the time Shao Zifeng got home, it was already past four in the afternoon.

Under Qiqi’s expectant gaze, he distributed the shopping bags to his mother and Qiqi, then quickly exchanged a few words before making an excuse to retreat to his room.

...

“Bang!”

Once in his room, Shao Zifeng flopped straight onto the hard bed and blankly stared at the ceiling for a good while before snapping back to reality.

The recent influx of overwhelming memories and emotions, and the collision of reality and illusion, still had some lingering effects. At least for now, Shao Zifeng found himself uncontrollably zoning out, with his mind swirling with memories, unsure if they were real or not.

Pulling out his phone from his pocket, Shao Zifeng decided to check a website to see if there was any kind of mutant creature capable of implanting memories into people.

“Mutant Creatures Omninet” was currently one of the hottest websites globally, simple in functionality yet possessing unmatched popularity.

In its several sections, whether it was the “Mutant Creatures Field Guide” or the “Global Mutant Creatures Rankings,” there were numerous active users either sharing information or engaging in heated arguments.

Besides that, the video section was brimming with videos by netizens who had incidentally captured footage of unfamiliar mutant creatures—this section was particularly beloved by amateur researchers, whose greatest desire was to discover and name new mutant creatures.

Although it was just a site established by a civilian organization, a significant portion of its active users were Combat Training Masters, including Shao Zifeng.

After watching several of the site’s famous arguments, Shao Zifeng grew to like it and would check it whenever he had some time.

However, his main purpose today was research. So, once his VPN connected to the external network, he directly navigated to the “Mutant Creatures Field Guide” section, which documented all the publicly released information on creature skills and talents.

Of course, there was some information that wasn’t publicly disclosed; only the researchers could hope to piece together clues from videos, public papers, and rumors.

Of course, this information was only of reference value, better than nothing.

Looking at the rows of text on the screen, Shao Zifeng felt a bit overwhelmed, unsure of where to begin.

The site only had a basic search function, which allowed searching by keyword.

For instance, if you wanted to search for a fire-related ability, you could only type the name of the ability or a keyword.

If you didn’t know the name or keyword, entering your own description of the ability would yield no results.

Being a novice and also coming from a parallel universe, Shao Zifeng’s knowledge base was profoundly weak—he was not even clear on how many types of mutant creatures there were, let alone the abilities of different types.

Forcing himself to focus and not drift off, Shao Zifeng pondered for a moment and decided to start with abilities. The capabilities of each type were mainly just variations in strength, aside from a few control and defence abilities, which were mostly the same.

For example, the fire abilities included Fire Protection, a defensive skill, but besides that, most of the fire abilities were oriented towards strong attacks.

With this in mind, Shao Zifeng randomly clicked into a category of abilities.

Water Defense: …

Shao Zifeng was speechless—just now, he clearly hadn’t intended to click on the water abilities section.

Could he be spacing out again?

In the time that followed, Shao Zifeng switched back and forth between daydreaming and searching for skills.

In less than half an hour, he had clicked into the Water Defense skills introduction section three times—can you believe it?

Wordlessly closing the Fire Protection skills introduction tab, Shao Zifeng resignedly clicked on another tab, assuming it was likely still about water…

Huh?

Shao Zifeng looked at the skill introduction on the screen and instantly perked up.

[Illusion Wave]: Emits an illusion wave, causing a brief deviation in the target’s cognition. Compatible attributes: Illusion, Phantom, Others

Cognitive deviation.

Shao Zifeng closed his eyes and recalled a detail—in his memory, he had questioned the time for a moment after entering the elevator, but after a moment of confusion, he had believed that the time was correct. This must have been a deviation in cognition.

Shao Zifeng looked at the next skill.

[Illusion Light]: Emits a strange illusion light, causing a brief deviation in the target’s vision. Compatible attributes: Illusion, Phantom, Others.

Seeing this, Shao Zifeng felt somewhat thrilled. He became more certain that the influence on him must be related to a skill or talent in this category. Thinking this, he continued to read on.

After a long while, Shao Zifeng sighed. It seemed there were no skills like that.

At least among the recorded skills that have been made public here, there was none that could wholly affect a person’s cognition, perception, vision, emotions, or even memory.

But not all was lost. Although he couldn’t be one hundred percent certain, at least he could narrow down a direction, making it much easier to sift through talents later on.

Closing the skills section, Shao Zifeng opened the talents section and typed ‘Illusion’ into the search bar.

After a brief refresh, rows of talents with different names appeared before Shao Zifeng, and relevant information could only be accessed by opening each talent. This was undoubtedly a straightforward yet tedious major task.

Shao Zifeng sighed and began the extensive search.

On the fifth floor of Renmin Square Department Store, under dim yellow lights stood a middle-aged man with a sleazy look, holding a bag while accompanied by an otter-like mutant creature.

“Finally completed another task.” The middle-aged man looked at the pocket in his hand with a slight smile, then he bent down and said to the otter, “You’ve worked hard; once this task is handed in, I can buy you an energy potion. Are you happy?”

“Eey…” The little otter happily climbed from the man’s leg onto his body, rubbing its little head against the sleazy man’s gaunt face.

“Alright, alright, that’s enough. The elevator is here,” said the middle-aged man with a smile, gently pushing away the otter’s affection while quietly waiting for the elevator doors to open.

Entering the elevator cabin, the middle-aged man skillfully tapped seven times, waited for the wall to split, and then swiftly stepped inside.

Shortly after, a blood-soaked little otter rushed down the stairs, frantically clawing at the closing walls, making a screeching noise.

Suddenly, a black fog, tentacle-like, entwined the little otter, dragging it back into the darkness.

Only leaving claw marks on the walls and a puddle of blood on the ground.
