Chapter 122: 121: Squeeze You Dry!
Chapter 122: Chapter 121: Squeeze You Dry!
“It looks like no one else is coming today,” Shao Zifeng glanced at the time and said to the little ones beside him, stretching lazily.
It was five o’clock, and the eastern sky was revealing a faint light of dawn. The once sleeping city began to wake up, and food carts with lights on passed through the People’s Square from time to time, starting a day of diligent work.
He just needed to wait for an officer from Dragon City’s Supernatural Management Department to take over his shift, and his first day’s task would be completed. However, he did not need to meet the person who came; after all, he didn’t have an official identity—not even considered an employee, at best a friend helping out.
With Lingling’s help, it was convenient to clean up the traces of the fight on the rooftop. Even the dried bloodstains were burned to a crisp with flame and then crushed and scattered in the wind.
Looking at the roof that was now spotless, Shao Zifeng nodded in satisfaction. The rooftop was even tidier than when he had arrived, and the cement holes left after Lingling used the Vine Strangulation were now filled with a few small flowers.
He figured the officers who came up here for the first time wouldn’t notice anything out of the ordinary.
The reason he had done this was to avoid causing trouble for the Dragon City county’s Supernatural Management Department, so they wouldn’t think a homicide had occurred and have to go to the trouble of opening an investigation and looking for clues.
Since the last time Dragon City county’s captain led a rescue operation in Su City and was sacrificed, the remaining officers of the Supernatural Management Department included only the clerical staff, newcomers, and those not very strong. Since it wasn’t graduation season yet, the already short-staffed upper management simply did not have spare officers to assign here and fill the vacancy.
These people dealt with the cases that occurred in the county every day, wishing they could split one person into two. Now, the superiors had assigned them to station three people at the department store, one could imagine the pressure they were under.
Time passed, and finally, the sunrise broke through the horizon, hanging on the edge of the city, casting a warm morning glow over the dilapidated department store.
“Hee-hee!”
“Yow!”
Lingling and the fawn made happy sounds; as wood creatures, they were very fond of such warm and not too intense sunlight.
The fawn stood beside Shao Zifeng, its crystal-clear eyes reflecting the rising sun and showing a look of yearning. A gentle breeze ruffled its fur, and backlighting rendered it a touch of sanctity.
Lingling lay on Shao Zifeng’s head, its little short hands at its mouth, gazing fixedly at the sunrise. Its translucent body shone like a gemstone under the sunlight.
The three of them stood under the sunrise, peaceful as if they were in an oil painting, their shadows stretched long beneath them.
The sound of a police siren approached, and a service car appeared from afar, getting closer by the second.
“Alright, it’s time to go home,” Shao Zifeng said as he picked up the fawn and gave Lingling a wink.
They ran toward the back, vaulted over the railing, and jumped down.
Behind the department store was an old alley. As he plummeted rapidly, the howling wind whistled by his ears, the alley rapidly enlarged in his vision, and it seemed he was about to crash into a pile of junk in the alley.
“Swoosh!”
Just then, two thick vines with green leaves burst from the ground, wrapping around his waist swiftly and sinuously like snakes.
Lingling floated in mid-air, its little short hands glowing, its jade-like eyes swirling with green light.
It frowned slightly, indicating that such manipulation was not easy for it.
The downward force dissipated, Shao Zifeng stabilized his posture, landed gently, and the vines retracted back into the ground. The whole sequence flowed smoothly and was full of flair.
Shao Zifeng was calm as if nothing had happened and even tossed Lingling an encouraging glance.
After surveying the deserted alley, he quickly returned Lingling and the fawn into the pet space, then Shao Zifeng took a deep breath.
He stepped out.
Hisss!
Shao Zifeng felt as if he had stepped on cotton, his legs uncontrollably trembling.
This feeling…
Was like a damn dream.
…
“Zifeng, have you seen my kitchen knife?”
A new day began with the sound of his mother looking for her kitchen knife.
Shao Zifeng suddenly sat up from bed, glanced quickly at the kitchen knife on the table with its handle burned off, and guiltily answered from behind the door, “I haven’t seen it.”
“Oh, then I’ll look again. I’m getting old… can’t remember where I put the knife.” Shao’s mother’s voice faded away, she must have gone downstairs.
Shao Zifeng breathed a sigh of relief and lay stiffly on the bed.
He checked the time, eight twenty.
Having been woken up after less than two hours of sleep, Shao Zifeng felt a bit downhearted.
Just as he thought about catching up on some more sleep, the image of the kitchen knife on the table kept him wide awake.
Rolling out of bed, he needed to find a safe place to hide it, in case his mom saw it and he couldn’t explain.
Reaching out his hand and placing it on the handle of the knife, Shao Zifeng suddenly looked up with a sense of foreboding.
Outside the window, a pair of luminous blue eyes were smiling winingly at him, their tail restlessly swishing back and forth.
…
“Speak up, what do you want.”
After dinner, Shao Zifeng carried Qiqi back to his room, his face ringed with dark circles, looking utterly disconsolate.
Qiqi sat elegantly on the bed, gazing innocently at Shao Zifeng: “What do I want? Zifeng, is there something you want to tell me, duck.”
“I…” Shao Zifeng was at a loss for words, his mind spinning quickly.
She hadn’t made any requests.
Could it be!
Could it be that Qiqi wasn’t planning on telling his mother!
This is why I picked you up!
Noble!
Shao Zifeng quickly plastered on a smile: “I have nothing to say, so if that’s the case, Qiqi, you go play. I’ll get some more sleep.”
“Mm-hmm, you’re just training too hard. You really need to watch your health,” Qiqi’s lazy and mature voice carried a hint of concern, the blue eyes sincere: “If it gets to be too much, I could talk to mom. It’s no good for you to be out training so late at night; what if you wear yourself out?”
Shao Zifeng’s smile froze; if his mother found out about his late-night escapades, she would never stop nagging him.
Thinking about it made Shao Zifeng shudder. That situation must be avoided at all costs.
Squinting at Qiqi, she remained in her spot, looking at him with a face full of concern, but sadly…
I’ve seen right through you!
“Meow~ What’s wrong, Zifeng?” Qiqi stepped forward, her azure eyes shining like stars, her white fur fluffy and soft, and her long tail dragged on the bed, its tip quivering slightly. She was adorably mortifying.
A man’s heart is stirred!
I feel like petting a cat.
Damn it.
I wasn’t expecting Qiqi to master such a deadly skill that effortlessly takes down a tough guy like me. I must not let her succeed!
“Your disguise has been seen through. State your purpose,” Shao Zifeng narrowed his eyes, restraining the impulsive desire to pet the cat.
Qiqi looked startled, equipped as she was with the gift of understanding language, and extremely clever, she grasped Shao Zifeng’s meaning in an instant. He must have misunderstood something, right?
But then again…
Qiqi’s large eyes roamed.
And with an ill-intentioned expression she stated, “A new hero was released today, I’m not familiar with it, you have to play with me all day to practice.”
Shao Zifeng’s face darkened, and he pointed a trembling finger at Qiqi: “You’re so vicious!”
Qiqi felt a thrill of triumph.
That’s for sneaking out at night to play. If I don’t drain you dry today, consider it my loss.
What do you think?
