My Pet Beast is Super Fearsome

Chapter 142: 141 Storage Room

Chapter 142: Chapter 141 Storage Room

In the disheveled bluestone room, Shao Zifeng sat against the wall on the floor, absently caressing the hidden-edge knife sheath in his hand, his expression thoughtful.

The Chasing Moon Dog sat next to him, its tail wagging slightly, as it cocked its head, looking at its temporary master.

Its horrific wounds had healed, but the fur hadn’t grown back, leaving it somewhat patchy and bald.

As for Shao Zifeng, he hadn’t sustained any injuries; even the scratches on the back of his hand from earlier on the rooftop had been healed, but his clothes were stained with mud and blood, looking slightly ragged.

Stretching out his hand to pet the Chasing Moon Dog’s fluffy head, Shao Zifeng leaned on the knife sheath to stand up and looked around the messy room.

His memory halted as he emerged from the illusion, and he had no recollection of what followed. However, upon waking and seeing the hidden-edge knife beside him, he had a rough idea of what might have happened after he lost consciousness.

...

He took out his cellphone from his pocket and discovered that the screen was cracked, but it was still barely operable.

“Zifeng, I’ve been too busy lately. I’ll try to get to Dragon City as early as possible, not later than noon. We’ll talk when we meet.”

Shao Zifeng looked at the message and curled his lip. Fortunately, Qiuqiu had taken care of things; otherwise, if he really had waited until noon, he likely would’ve been in serious trouble.

The message was sent by Chen Zhenglong in the middle of the night. It seemed that he had not rested well these past few days, rushing over here as soon as he finished with things in Su City.

Shao Zifeng’s finger hesitated over the reply box, and, after a moment of hesitation, he decided not to tell him that the situation had already been resolved. After all, he had killed a few people from the underground forces in the last two days. The aftermath still needed Chen Zhenglong’s attention, and it would be awkward if he decided not to come upon learning that everything was resolved.

The air inside the room was murky, and especially after the cold sensation had dissipated, the smell became even more pungent. Shao Zifeng looked at the storage room that had been revealed after the bookshelf collapsed, hesitated for a moment, turned on the flashlight on his phone, and walked inside with the Chasing Moon Dog.

The entrance to the storage room was small, leading to a downward-sloping corridor, just wide enough for a grown man to pass through.

The first thing Shao Zifeng noticed upon entering the corridor was the stench—it was eye-wateringly bad. He could bear it by covering his nose with his sleeve, but the Chasing Moon Dog was nearly rolling its eyes back from the odor.

Out of options, Shao Zifeng let it stay outside to guard, while he entered with his cellphone in hand.

The downward-sloping floor of the corridor was uneven, and the walls on either side were covered in moss. There was also the slippery, sticky feeling underfoot that made walking uncomfortable.

Shao Zifeng initially thought it was blood, but upon shining his light on it, he realized that the stones had merely become damp and were coated with slime.

The corridor was not particularly long, but walking through it had a distinct sense of the passage of time, incongruent with the outside, as if entering a tomb passageway. Combined with the pungent smell and the sensation underfoot, the experience was quite oppressive.

At the end of the corridor, a partially decayed wooden door stood. Shao Zifeng gently pushed it with the knife sheath, and the door swung open. He then shone his phone light inside.

Before him, a pale and familiar face was staring directly at the door, shrouded in a large black robe, seated in the middle of the storage room on a chair.

Shao Zifeng’s hand trembled, and he quickly held the knife sheath in front of his chest, warily observing the old man, thinking it was another illusion created by a Nightmare Shadow Servant.

A moment later, Shao Zifeng slowly lowered his knife sheath, the light in his peripheral vision not reacting to any energy feedback. If he wasn’t mistaken, this person was likely the master of the Nightmare Shadow Servant.

After calming down, Shao Zifeng covered his nose as he entered the storeroom. He first used fire element to light the wall lamps in the storeroom, then slowly made his way over to the old man’s side.

Upon approaching, he felt that the temperature around the corpse was significantly lower than the rest of the storeroom. It was unclear how long the elder had been dead, but the body was relatively well-preserved, with no stench emanating from it.

He guessed that it must have been the low temperature that had preserved the body from decomposing. However, as the Nightmare Shadow Servant left, the temperature of the storeroom gradually rose. The old man’s pale slack skin now glistened with crystal-clear droplets of water, and a puddle had formed on the stone slab under the chair.

What puzzled him was, if the old man was not the source of the foul stench, then where exactly was that strong rotten smell coming from? Just as Shao Zifeng prepared to search for the source, a dampened letter on the ground caught his eye.

He bent down to pick up the dampened letter, which seemed hurriedly written with weak and wobbly handwriting, likely penned by the elder in his final moments.

“To my respected superior: I have been plagued by frequent nightmares recently, and my spirits are low. I fear my end is nigh… I hope you can send someone to take over soon. My pet beast, the Nightmare Shadow Servant, is inherently not evil but, due to my condition, its behavior has become quite strange lately. If possible, please treat it kindly…”

The letter had many corrections, and if he was not mistaken, this was probably a draft. The actual letter was likely the source of Luo Feng’s intelligence.

Alas, if only this old comrade knew how to use a phone, none of this would have happened.

After reading the letter, Shao Zifeng tried again to locate the source of the stench, but during his search, no matter which direction he looked, as long as he laid eyes on the storage shelves, the blue dots in his vision would spin wildly, making him unbearably curious. In the end, he simply gave up the search.

Using the light from the lamps on the storeroom walls, he could see there were four storage shelves. Each one had a number and a list of items, all handwritten by the elder.

He walked over to storage shelf number 1. It held silver boxes containing energy potions and healing items. From the information he had, the highest grade available there was level three.

Well, himself…

No, that’s not right!

The Chasing Moon Dog had worked so hard, taking some as compensation should be no problem at all.

Shao Zifeng looked around guiltily, feeling as if the old man in the black robe was watching him from behind.

He was not particularly interested in other properties; Qiuqiu always had those in its own bag. It was just that dark property, he knew that after he left, his mother would definitely be unwilling to part with it.

So he ignored the other potions, collecting over a dozen Level 2 and 3 dark attribute potions into a box and added some healing items. Then he set it aside, planning to take it with him when he left.

After inspecting storage shelf number 1, Shao Zifeng moved onto number 2, which held eggs of oviparous magical beasts. Sadly, nearly half of them were dead eggs, and the labels did not match the species of the eggs.

For example, the egg in front of him was a 1-star quality domestic duck egg, yet the label described it as a swan egg, arrogantly detailing the swan’s evolutionary pathways and mentioning prominent people who possessed them.

Skipping over the domestic duck egg, aside from those dead eggs devoid of energy fluctuations, Shao Zifeng examined each one in turn.

After all, this was just a small place, and most of the eggs here were common and not of very high quality. After checking them all, the highest he found was just a 2-star chickadee egg.
