Chapter 1274 Like A Scythe To Wheat

"Here we are. Yet another boring few hours before we are thrown into some of the most hectic combat we will ever find ourselves in and there is literally nothing else we could be doing right now besides waiting."

Anput seemed aggravated by the inability to be doing anything productive at all since we needed to build up our energy for tonight while also honing and focusing our minds on it as well; therefor there was nothing we could do besides stand around and wait for the sun to set.

When the moon rose we would once more be exploding into action, but unlike yesterday we were going to do so from a hundred feet away in a fortified bulwark that Anput had created for us, the use of a mana vial allowing her to create something special.

Solidifying the sand into rock to create a stable foundation for this bulwark, the Jackalkin created something that would be capable of defending against most projectile attacks while also being easily repairable, and she had even taken the time to fortify the outside as well to make entry as hard as possible for any attacker.

"It is boring, yes, but these hours of peace are preferable to the minutes of chaos that we are about to subject ourselves to. Besides, tonight we have some experiments to test, which is where you and Mom come in to play, remember?"

"Yeah yeah... we're gonna head on down to the edge and lure some of them out to see what happens before falling back. Then at the end of the night we do the same and see if they regenerate their bodies tomorrow night."

She was bored, and honestly we all were, but these hours were nice to have as we waited for the sun to fall, going over the plan and putting our heads together as we made sure there were no flaws or anything that we had missed about any part of what we should be trying to do.

The ocean of blood red sand was just as grotesque as it was yesterday, and even from here we were bombarded by the stench of the rotting corpses as they baked thoroughly thanks to the overwhelming heat of the sun, though unlike yesterday we weren't submerged into it so it was actually bearable.

As the sky darkened and the night began to drape itself across the desert we got to watch as the two armies were gradually awakened, their bodies healing at incredible rates before they pushed themselves to their feet to begin waging a slaughter against one another as quickly as possible.

They stabbed and stomped on whomever was nearby to reduce the numbers as much as possible before everyone was reanimated, but unlike before they were greeted with a new sight, one that confused a few of them; a defensible position overlooking the battlefield from not that far away.

It was new and it wasn't something they had seen before, so a few of the soldiers from both sides began to take their fighting off to the side, though there was a clear reluctance to step off of the bloody sand that seemed to confirm my suspicions; they were tied to the bloody sands and stepping off of it would likely kill them permanently.

Right now they were in a loop that would keep them alive so long as they fought one another for eternity, but stepping off of that red sand meant losing that loop and entering the afterlife properly, something that a majority of them seemed to fear now that they had been in this loop for so long.

But there were still those of them who sacrificed themselves or simply decided that now was a time to end it all as they stepped off of the red sands and onto the more golden, orangish sand of the desert, promptly exploding as the mana within them went crazy and burst out of all of their pores.

Blood flew everywhere and soaked as many grains of sand as possible, leaving not a single ounce of flesh or bone anywhere as they instead were turned into a liquid that spread maybe two or three feet out of the already established area.

It was like paint, and the more of them that stepped out the closer they got as they turned more of the desert into their domain, not even giving Anput and Mom the chance to go and intercept them since it was clear that we were right in our suspicions.

Therefore the obvious next course of action was to go ahead and open fire from our slightly raised bulwark, making use of our spells and watching as the soldiers fought one another while also getting cut down by whatever spells we found to work the best. Anput opted for the blanketing of areas with her metal arrows, Leone just blew everyone apart as best she could, and Mom sent out waves of flame that ignited any cloth on these soldiers to start burning them alive, illuminating the battlefield with her spells.

As for me, I began to weave together two separate spells that helped keep things under control; a pulsing blast of sharpened wind that would blow over the desert followed by a crescent of ice that shot out in random directions, cutting through armor and shattering after slicing through one or two people.

They were gaining ground on us rapidly, but at the same time we were watching as dozens of them threw away their 'immortality' for eternal rest, and hopefully tomorrow night we would be able to confirm that they were truly gone for good; and perhaps we would be able to end this trial ahead of time if we were able to pull their corpses out into the desert to kill them ourselves during the day.

Until then though, we watched them march closer and closer while fighting one another, each passing minute adding to their dominion while also reducing their numbers by quite a bit as all of us racked up a kill count that began to lose meaning after the first hour...
