Chapter 361 - 361- A Man And His Void (Part 3)
The warning came to Arthur rather abruptly but he still didn't immediately react as he took those words carefully and thought about them. There was clearly no malicious intentions in the warning as Yonathan wanted Arthur to avoid getting in trouble.
'I already expected the Royal Family to be corrupt one way or another. The entire capital reeks of corruption and as they say 'There is no smoke without a fire'. Although hearing his story, they sound more and more like true devils than humans.' Arthur mused.
He also remembered all the discrimination against anything that wasn't human. That idea was very much rooted in the consciousness of every single human in that capital and perhaps the rest of the major cities of the empire.
All of this could've not been simply a coincidence. After all, history is written by the ones who come out victorious and humans were the ones who won so they rewrote history as they wished, changing the perspective they had through the years.
'So I must not give them anything they can use against me. I think I can do that much.' He thought to himself.
"I will keep that in mind, Yonathan. Either way, with what I'm about to do, the Royal Family will want my head in any possible way. I don't care about them nor do I want to befriend them. They are as scummy as all the other bastards I want to kill." He replied as he rubbed the back of his head.
"Is that so? May I know what you're wishing to do, child?" The old man asked.
"... I'm intending to infiltrate the Abyssal Bastion and free the Beastmen." Arthur replied. For some reason, he didn't find any hesitation within himself to tell this man about his plan. He felt like Yonathan would be able to understand him and what he wanted to do.
"..."
But, the reaction from the old man was far from what Arthur expected. For the first few seconds, the boy wasn't looking as he was staring down. Then, when the silence prolonged, he started feeling odd so he looked up, only to be met with a very confusing sight.
The man's face was completely frozen, his eyes wide open as they could be and his mouth hung open. He looked absolutely petrified and completely shocked beyond words. This was the most expressive Arthur had seen the man be and it made him quite confused.
*DROP*
"Is everything ok, Yonathan?" Arthur asked.
"The Abyssal Bastion? Kid, did I hear you correctly?" The man blinked as he shook his head.
"Yeah. The Abyssal Bastion. You know, the prison where the Beastmen are held." Arthur explained.
"..."
'How… How…' In his head, Yonathan was having the turmoil of a lifetime. A thousand thoughts popped through his head all at the same time. Never in his wildest dreams did he expect the boy to say such a thing? 'Infiltrate the Abyssal Bastion to save the Beastmen… Why? Where did he even come up with this?'
It had been tens of years since the old man had heard that name… The Abyssal Bastion. The man-made hell where all the enemies of the royal family are thrown. It was a place of absolute torture and pain, nothing that goes in comes out. It was a world where all forms of human cruelty were applied.
"Death…" The old man muttered. "You will die, child. Scratch that idea completely."
"Hm? Of course, I'm already aware of how dangerous it is. That's why I mainly ended up here in the first place. I was on a journey to get stronger so that I could have a chanc-"
"Forget about it!" Suddenly, the old man yelled loudly, taking Arthur by surprise. "That is no place you should even think about."
"..."
"The Abyssal Bastion… That place… It is hell. No, even hell is not as cruel as that place. Hell at least punishes those who deserve it."
"Yonathan…"
"I don't know what is driving you to do such a thing. But, I will tell you from now on, there is no chance for you to even make it out of there alive if you enter it let alone save an entire race of creatures from there." The old man explained in a very cold tone.
'It is impossible. There is no way for him to do that, even if he has backup and a plan. I cannot see it.' The old man kept denying the possibility in his head, trying to ignore every other aspect. He knew how monstrously talented Arthur was and how much potential he had, and that was why he didn't want him to go there and ruin all of that potential. He feared that Arthur would be throwing himself to imminent death with no return.
"Don't throw yourself to death when your life is still ahead of you, child."
'This better make him change his mind. It is perhaps a reckless idea he decided to do in the spur of the mom-'
"No."
"... Huh?"
For a moment there, the old man thought the boy was completely convinced. However, the moment he spoke that single word, he made Yonathan look up.
"No?"
"I'm still doing it," Arthur replied. "I understand why you're warning me, but this is something I have decided to do no matter what happens."
"You aren't going to survive!"
"Who determined that?"
"..."
"I don't care what people say about the Abyssal Bastion and what is inside. Whether I succeed or not is up to me. If I fail, then I'm ready to take the full scale of the consequences." Arthur replied in a calm tone.
He had almost a month of time to easily think about this decision of his accept the reality of the situation. He had come to terms with the fact that the mission was basically impossible. There were too many variables for him to make an actual plan and the powers lurking within that place were probably far more horrifying than anything he had ever experienced.
He knew that any mistake could easily end any small chance he could have and he also knew that at any moment, all his attempts could come to a screeching halt.
He could die, get trapped there forever, and never even leave the game, he could be tortured for a very long time or even end up seeing all the Beastmen and innocent souls in there get killed brutally.
It was not a mere mission, it was perhaps the greatest task he might take on during his entire time playing this game. Whether it succeeded or not, it was going to reshape a lot of things about his journey, perspective, and even personality. It will either make or break him.
"I'm going to get those poor souls out of there, and if that means a war against the Royal Family and the entire Empire, then by all means, they can try me," Arthur said. "I have seen enough of their doings and I'm already disgusted. If I can take them down myself then I will do it without thinking twice."
The old man stared into Arthur's eyes and all he could see was just endless ambition and desire. He looked like a hungry beast, waiting for the moment when he could make a move.
'There is no fear in his eyes. He doesn't even seem like he cares that death is the most likely outcome.' Yonathan mused. 'So it wasn't something he decided to do in the spur of the moment… He had given it a lot of thought.'
Again, the old man had underestimated Arthur and how his mind worked. It was quite the pattern that kept happening again and again and he couldn't figure out how to stop it. The boy had tricked him in all kinds of ways, constantly showing him the most unexpected outcomes.
There was truly no way to actually stop that and Yonathan was starting to give up doing it.
"Is that so?" The old man asked. "If that's the case, then I won't stop you. You have set your mind on that mission. I don't know what you will do, but, if you can truly pull that off… I will be eternally grateful to you, child." Yonathan said.
"Grateful? Why?"
"The poor souls trapped within that hell… You're not the only one aware of their innocence and the sheer oppression they faced in their lives. The reason I and hundreds of thousands of people were punished was because we tried to fight for this oppression those creatures are facing… We tried to stop this systematic brutality executed on these people."
"Wait… What?!" Arthur blurted out as he almost choked on his own saliva.
"Yes… The reason we were punished was because we wanted to fight for the freedom of the non-human creatures. We wanted to let them leave and go back to their homelands."
A//N: Thank you all for the gifts, golden tickets, and PS. Let's keep it up!
