Chapter 442: 442
On the sea.
Lu Wenrou had clearly underestimated the force of nature.
Last night, she set off toward the nearest island in a rubber dinghy, but as the sea heaved and dipped beneath her, it felt as if she was getting further away instead of closer. The dense fog enveloping her made the terrible realization dawn upon her: she had gotten lost at sea.
The magnetic field also rendered the two walkie-talkies she carried useless, and she could not reach the coast guard vessel waiting out at sea.
Fortunately, she had brought ample fresh water and compressed biscuits; she could hold out for ten days or even half a month, but she couldn't help worrying about how Qin Yu was doing now.
To conserve power, Lu Wenrou was forced to turn off the motor of her dinghy, drifting aimlessly in the thick fog all alone.
"Ch-ch..."
After a while, a voice finally came through the walkie-talkie.
"This is Lu Wenrou, go ahead!"
Lu Wenrou pressed the walkie-talkie anxiously and spoke.
"Team Leader Lu, the magnetic field is gradually weakening, and the tide is starting to ebb. It should return to normal around noon. How's your situation over there?"
The voice of the coast guard captain came through the walkie-talkie.
"I'm lost, but it's not a big deal. I'm just worried about my friend, it's been so long..."
Lu Wenrou's mood grew heavy.
"Team Leader Lu, don't worry. As soon as the magnetic field dissipates, we will dispatch a helicopter. We'll search from the air and we won't give up until we find everyone! Also, your dinghy has a positioning system; as long as you don't move around too much, we'll find you quickly!"
The coast guard captain had also had a rough night, having received orders from both Division Seven and Dragon Gate, with the explicit command to bring back the living or the dead.
"Mm, thank you."
Lu Wenrou put down the walkie-talkie, her spirited eyebrows furrowed tightly. Without finding Qin Yu, she just couldn't relax.
On the island.
"Han Bing!"
Qin Yu trudged through the thick snow, following a set of footprints for about ten minutes before he saw that the ground below him dropped off by more than ten meters. Han Bing was lying there, seemingly unconscious.
Dammit, just as I thought, this foolish woman took a wrong step and fell down.
Qin Yu surveyed the surroundings; the level ground was flanked by rock walls on three sides, with only one side open to the sea.
Without a rope on him, if he went down, he would likely be trapped there as well.
Thinking back to last night when Han Bing nestled in his arms, saying those considerate words for his sake, Qin Yu gave a wry smile. He slid down the rock face like a child on a playground slide, straight to the bottom.
Thankfully, the snow was thick enough. Otherwise, if it had been bare rock, he would have sustained serious injuries.
Splash...
After landing, Qin Yu rushed over to Han Bing and put his hand under her nose first thing.
Thank goodness, she seemed to have only fainted and wasn't seriously harmed.
Then, he pressed forcefully on her lips a few times.
"Mm... what's going on..."
Han Bing faintly opened her eyes.
"You fell down!"
Qin Yu pointed up to the cliff and explained. But he couldn't really blame Han Bing; the whole island was cloaked in white and shrouded in fog. A misstep was easy to make.
"I..."
Han Bing showed an embarrassed expression. Why did she always make a fool of herself in front of Qin Yu?
"So how do we get back up?"
Han Bing glanced at the trail Qin Yu had made sliding down, which was already showing some exposed rock, constantly washed by the sea and as slick as anything, impossible for even a fly to stand on.
"Solutions are born from the mind."
After saying this, Qin Yu tried to lighten the mood and joked, "If we really can't get back up, we'll just live here forever, have a couple of babies. Wouldn't that be fun?"
"Get lost, you have a wife. Who's going to have babies with you!"
Han Bing rolled her eyes.
If Qin Yu had dared to say such a thing before, she would have chased him for tens of thousands of miles to get back at him.
But after last night's ordeal, she just found it a little funny and exasperating.
Even at a time like this, Qin Yu was in the mood for jokes.
"I mean, what if we can't make it up there, a lone man and a single woman, are we supposed to maintain a pure friendship forever?"
Qin Yu shrugged.
"If we really can't get up, how long do you think we'd survive? No food, no water, three days, five days, or a week?"
Han Bing said with a somewhat gloomy expression.
"Food and drink aren't a problem as long as there are fish in the sea. Of course, they won't taste as good as those from a restaurant."
After finishing his sentence, Qin Yu began to undo his belt.
"What are you doing, don't mess around. I don't want to have your baby!"
Han Bing covered her eyes and took a few steps back.
"I'm tired and hungry right now, do you really think I'm in the mood?"
Qin Yu said with a face full of black lines.
"Then what are you going to do?"
Han Bing slightly parted her fingers, looking suspiciously at Qin Yu.
"Figure out a way to get up, of course!"
Qin Yu replied, fashioning the belt into a loop, then started to take off his pants and explained, "My jeans can be torn into four pieces; if twisted into rope, it would be almost five meters long. Add to that the force of my running jump, this ten-plus-meter distance should be no problem for me."
"Oh...."
Han Bing glanced at the shirt she was wearing. She thought about suggesting tearing it up to add some length to their makeshift rope, but the idea of becoming a real-life Eve stopped her. In the end, she bit her lower lip and said nothing.
"Huff, huff...."
After Qin Yu finished making the rope, he tied it to the belt and swung it a few times in his hand before throwing it towards the cliff edge.
The rocks were smooth, but there were protruding parts, and if the loop could catch on one of those, the rest would be easy.
After about two or three tries, the belt loop successfully caught on a rock.
Qin Yu pulled on it hard, and it was pretty much secure.
"I can make it up, but what about you, what will you do?"
Qin Yu glanced at Han Bing, who was leaning slightly, clearly having hurt her leg in the fall.
And the rope made from jeans would hold the weight of one person no problem, but it would most likely break if he carried her.
"You go up first. I'll just stay down here, and if someone comes to rescue us, they can save me then!"
Han Bing didn't want to burden Qin Yu any further, as he had already saved her twice.
"This...."
Qin Yu scratched his head, looked at the cliff, and suddenly had an idea, "Here's what we'll do, Han Bing, I'll lift you by your feet to about three and a half meters, then with a good throw, you should be able to grab the rope. You climb up first, then I'll follow!"
"But what if the rope can only be used once?"
Han Bing blinked and asked.
"Heh, then I guess I'm out of luck."
Qin Yu laughed.
"You... I don't want to owe you anything!"
Han Bing glared at him.
"Come on, you're in your twenties and already fussing like an old lady. Come on, I'll lift you, up you go!"
Having said that, Qin Yu walked under the cliff, placed his hands on his knees, and waited for Han Bing to step on them.
Anyone who has been in the military basically knows this maneuver; with the cooperation of two comrades, heights within three meters are usually no problem. Not to mention Qin Yu and Han Bing were top-tier martial artists.
"Hurry up, don't worry, I won't look up!"
Seeing Han Bing standing still, Qin Yu couldn't help but urge her.
"Oh...."
Han Bing nodded, took a few quick steps, and jumped onto Qin Yu's palms.
At the same time, Qin Yu lifted his arms and pushed hard. Han Bing's body gracefully reached mid-air, and she grabbed the rope made from jeans.
She scrambled up the cliff in a few swift movements.
Then she shouted down to Qin Yu, "Your turn, come up quickly!"
What do you think?
