Before Yao Ran could take a step, she heard a man say, "That man must have drifted in the sea or eaten seafood—or maybe he drank seawater to survive. It’s a pity that after making it here, he got sick instead."

Overhearing this, Yao Ran turned to the speaker. Seeing that he was a young man, she asked, "Brother, do you know what disease that man had just now?"

The young man turned around, surprised to see a beautiful young lady and a handsome young man standing behind him.

He examined Yao Ran and Long Yu’s clean and healthy appearance before replying, "Sister, you don’t know about this?"

Yao Ran shook her head. "No. We just arrived today."

Hearing her response, the young man nodded in understanding and explained, "That man was infected with the mutant virus. Did you see those pimples on his face?"

Yao Ran nodded. "Yes."

Lowering his voice, the young man warned, "If you come into contact with the blood from those pimples, you will get infected with the mutant virus. It’s best to stay away if you see someone like that in the future."

After delivering his warning, the young man turned to leave with his companion.

Before he could walk far, Yao Ran called out, "Brother, please wait a moment."

The young man paused, turned around, and asked, "Sister, do you have another question?"

Yao Ran nodded, took a steamed bun from her space, and placed it in the young man’s hand.

Seeing the still-warm steamed bun as big as his fist, the young man’s eyes widened in surprise. The next second, he grinned and said, "Sister, you can ask me anything."

"Do you know the cause of that infection?" Yao Ran asked.

Hearing this, the young man looked around warily before whispering, "I heard that those people either ate sea monsters or human flesh."

As soon as Yao Ran heard this, her eyes flickered. "Sea monsters?"

The young man nodded and continued, "When I first arrived a few days ago, I saw soldiers capture a few sea monsters."

"They look like humans, but their bodies are covered in pimples. Their limbs have transformed into various shapes resembling sea creatures. Some of them can talk, but others attack humans on sight."

Hearing this, Yao Ran suddenly remembered Jiaozi. After a moment of silence, she asked, "Do people really eat those sea monsters?"

The young man nodded. "Of course. Most survivors reached this place by sea."

"Without enough food or fresh water, they had no choice but to eat whatever they could catch from the sea or drink seawater. Unless they had a water-element ability user with them or prepared enough supplies, this is their only choice to survive."

He sighed and added, "Between starving to death and eating mutated creatures, most people would choose the latter."

After he said that, Yao Ran remained silent for a few seconds before asking, "Do you know what happens to those infected?"

The young man shook his head. "I don’t know the details, but I heard that the infected are quarantined in a separate area to prevent the virus from spreading. If the mutant virus spreads to the masses, it could lead to disaster."

After getting the information she wanted, Yao Ran took out a small package containing ten pieces of compressed biscuits and handed it to the young man. "Thank you for the information, Brother."

"No problem." The young man smiled, hurriedly stuffed the compressed biscuits into his backpack, and left with his companion.

After he left, Long Yu turned to Yao Ran. "Do you think Jiaozi is infected with the mutant virus?"

Yao Ran nodded. "I’m afraid so."

"Then what will you do about her?" Long Yu asked.

Yao Ran frowned slightly at his question. A few seconds later, she replied, "Right now, Aunt Sima is taking care of Jiaozi, and nothing has happened so far. I suspect Jiaozi is different from the others infected by the mutant virus."

Thinking back to the first time they met Jiaozi, Long Yu said, "Let’s gather more information while we are here."

"Mhm."

Just then, the staff member returned with their ID cards and keys. He handed them over and said, "Please proceed to the second floor for a health check-up."

After witnessing what had happened earlier, Yao Ran and Long Yu understood that the check-up was mandatory to prevent an outbreak of the mutant virus, which could lead to the extermination of everyone in Nirvana.

She nodded and said, "Alright."

After receiving their ID cards and keys, Yao Ran and Long Yu went to the second floor for their check-up. Since they were given priority, it didn’t take long before it was their turn.

"Comrade Yao Ran." A nurse called while looking at the document in her hand.

Hearing her name, Yao Ran stood up from the chair placed in the corridor and approached the nurse.

"Please go inside," the nurse instructed.

With male and female survivors separated into different rooms, Long Yu had to go to the room next door for his check-up.

"Please undress," the female doctor said as soon as Yao Ran entered.

Yao Ran frowned slightly and then asked. "Even my underwear?"

The doctor smiled and shook her head. She then explained, "Just your clothes. I only need to check for injuries so I can treat them before they fester."

Since she didn’t have to remove her underwear, Yao Ran nodded and undressed. Once the doctor completed the examination, she jotted something down on a blank form while Yao Ran put her clothes back on.

Handing over the form, the doctor said, "Your check-up is done. You may leave now."

Yao Ran glanced at the grade written on the form and nodded. "Thank you."

As she stepped out, the nurse called for the next survivor.

Outside, Long Yu saw her coming and said, "Let’s go. The bus to Tower F will leave in ten minutes."
