Chapter 273 | 273 | Disastrous Aftermath
"A disaster, huh?" Abraham gazed upon the live footage displaying the current situation of the anchored fleet, Spear of Longinus. His eyes were narrowed and cold as his expression remained darkened by wrath. Beside him was Laplace who barely maintained her calm while an intelligence officer stood in front of the two of them holding a file report.
"Indeed, Sir... Half an hour ago, a mana-induced disturbance was detected above the port where the anchored fleet were resupplied. It was immediate, appearing merely three seconds before disappearing again. It was a calamity." The intelligence officer reported, perceiving the reactions of the two. She then continued in the following moment.
"A rapid storm formation was perceived within that timeframe, accompanied by a thunderstrike that caused an electrical surge which burnt everything within its nearby vicinity. Witnesses account have been confirmed that they have seen a vast pillar of thunder striking from the stormy heavens. We suspect that it might be the work of another Apostle."
When Abraham heard of the word Apostle, his eyes further narrowed realizing that Europa had begun taking them seriously as an actual threat. He glanced at his beloved wife and asked her a question. "Is it possible to be Sovereign Terra's Apostle?" To which she replied with a sigh. "Perhaps, though I lack information in regards to how much Apostle are in the ranks of the Sovereigns."
"But there is no doubt that I have executed all of the Apostles that participated in the final war of Terra. The thunder one must have arrived under the orders of their Sovereign to assist the Fleets of the Colonial Dominions." Laplace continued her response, acknowledging her ignorance of the matter. Abraham merely nodded and returned his attention to the intelligence officer.
"Give me the casualty report of the disaster." He wanted to continue pursuing more information about the matter. There was no doubt that it was a disaster. The lives lost would be catastrophic, though it does unveil how lacking their technology was when pitted against the higher Magus of Humanity. Naturally, the United World Government couldn't always rely on the two of them.
After all, there was only he and Laplace, who knows how many Apostles are ruled upon by the Sovereigns of Humanity. If they assaulted together, no matter how powerful he and Laplace were, they would be outnumbered and the United World Government would face utter devastation. It was a fact that had been nagging him since the conclusion of the final war of Terra.
The intelligence officer nodded in understanding and calmly reported the casualties of the disaster. "Three cruisers are critically damaged, two destroyers were sunk, five more are critically damaged, an aircraft carrier is inoperative at the moment, ten frigates are disabled, fifteen military logistic ships are under repairs. Casualties are numbered around 4,756 military personnel."
"3,456 have been confirmed to be KIA'd and 1,300 are severely injured. The United Military has deployed various anti-magus weaponry throughout the island, ensuring that any second enemy assault wouldn't be done without paying a heavy price." The words that escaped the intelligence officer's mouth were difficult to take in.
The combined-offensive fleet, Spear of Longinus, was beyond crippled. They would have to retreat, which poses a greater problem in regards to the incoming naval invasion of the Colonial Dominions Fleets. The Pelagus State wouldn't be able to defend themselves against the upcoming onslaught that would take place once the Colonial Dominions make their landing.
It was a good thing that they attacked first, otherwise they would have been assaulted regardless without doing much against the naval fleets of the Colonial Dominions. But there was no doubt that the Apostles have realized something important that could tip the scales of the battlefield. It was the simple fact that there were merely he and Laplace that could effectively defeat them.
Instead of consolidating into a single force, the Apostles would probably issue a strategy that would leave them separated. He and Laplace wouldn't be able to defend the United Military against the remaining Apostles, which would lead to the disastrous outcome that could result into what recently happened to the Spear of Longinus.
"Order the tactical relocation of the combined-offensive fleet, Spear of Longinus. I want them far away from the frontlines to undergo repairs. On the other hand, I want you to mobilized the entirety of the United Military into the archipelago. It must be defended, or else, what remained of the United World Government would be consumed by war."
After a short moment of thinking, Abraham finally gave his orders to the intelligence officer. The retreat of the Spear of Longinus was simple and straightforward. He didn't want them near the battlefield when undergoing repairs. Who knows what mad strategy those form the Magus Tower could conjure once they take notice of the repairing fleet.
Meanwhile, the entirety of the United Military would be effectively deployed to ensure that the naval fleets of the Colonial Dominions wouldn't be able to penetrate through the interior of the United World Government. Unlike the numerous islands of the Archipelago, the islands directly under the authority of the World Government didn't go beyond two dozens.
"Also, have the State of Pelagus prepare their forces as well. Grant them the knowledge we have against the Colonial Dominions and let them partake in the war as well. This isn't merely a battle for supremacy, but a fight for survival. And the United World Government wouldn't go down without biting a chunk out of Europa." Abraham continued with a cold voice.
The intelligence officer straightened her back and saluted to the authority of the United World Government and answered. "Affirmative, Sir... I will be relaying your orders to command and ensure their utmost completion." Afterward, she took her leave and entered the elevator that remained the only entrance to the crown of the Citadel.
There was only silence as Abraham and Laplace digested the reports that had been given to them. Their most obvious weakness was about to be utilized by the worse of their enemies. The spatial stabilizers had an apparent weakness in regards to the Area of Effect. Their limit was a ceiling of 10 kilometers in height and a diameter of 250 kilometers.
As long as a Magus could go beyond the height ceiling, they were practically free to teleport with remarkable ease. The United World Government hadn't solved the intrinsic problem of their airspace. It was a troublesome problem indeed. It made Abraham wonder whether he should directly attack the Colonial Dominions instead of actively defending.
"A counterattack is a must if we desire to turn the tides, my love." Laplace remarked, understanding the thoughts of her husband who remained quiet. Abraham was in agreement about how a counterattack was needed if they wanted to gain victory. However, what force would they use to invade the Colonial Dominions? The United Navy was currently under repair.
While there was the combined-defensive fleet, Aegis. He would rather avoid deploying them as their directive was to ensure that the United World Government remains defended against the forces of Europa and the Frontier no matter what. Utilizing them in a counterattack would leave the United World Government defenseless against a third-party naval assault.
Though, after taking his time thinking about it, an idea took form within Abraham's mind. His eyebrows rose, making Laplace, who was staring at him smile. It seemed that her husband finally found a way out from this troubling circumstance. Although, she did wonder what it may be. Would it only involve the two of them, or is he utilizing a force that replaces the combined-offensive fleet.
Without a hint of hesitation or delay, Abraham took out his phone and called the Director of the R&D Department. The Sentinel Program was a military force that would employ the recently developed technologies of the department. Amongst these technologies were advanced ones that could turn the tide against the naval fleets of the Colonial Dominions.
*Sir, how may I help you?* On the other side of the phone was none other than the Director of the R&D Department. He was amongst the brightest minds within the United World Government. Someone with influence, intelligence, and power. Through the department's combined technologies, turning the tides would be easier than usual.
"I need the deployment of the Sentinels. The combined-offensive fleet, Spear of Longinus, is inoperable at the moment. I want the Sentinels to partake in a counterassault against the naval fleets of the Colonial Dominions. Is that possible, Director?" Abraham coolly questioned the old man of the research and development department.
*It is possible, Sir. We recently concluded in our major testing, employing five thousand military personnel to be employed alongside the Sentinel Program. The Eagle Ships, now formally named as Strategic Ships have been deployed, marking the designation UNSS. Shall we begin mobilization, Sir?* The Director wondered, to which Abraham calmly replied. "Do so with haste."
*Understood, Sir. Your wish shall be achieved with our utmost efforts.* Abraham could feel the Director straightening his back and saluting at him. It has been the culture of the United Military, even the World Government, to straightened their backs and salute when meeting him. It had become a strange custom that even he couldn't control.
With that, the conversation between the two ended. The Sentinel Program would be mobilized and sent to the frontlines. Though, he was interested to see it for what it really was. Meanwhile, Laplace smiled at him and remarked. "Here I thought you would throw the sun at those bastards. You're just sending more of your toys to the battlefield."
Hearing her, Abraham smirked. "Make no mistake, Laplace. I'm still planning to throw the sun at them. I just want the United Military to learn and experience war. Otherwise, the United World Government would be too reliant towards the two of us." Discover exclusive content at My Virtual Library Empire
"That I understand," Laplace's eyes squinted as she turned her gaze towards the windows where the boundless lines of the vast horizons laid themselves for her to behold.
What do you think?
