Nightmare Assault

Chapter 326: Order

Chapter 326: Order

A small wooden segment sat quietly on the table. An Xuan sat at the table and stared at it. No one knew what he was thinking. Xia Meng wanted to persuade him, but every time, she swallowed back her words.

When An Xuan slowly severed Zuo Qing’s fingers, she was just beside him. If not for the raining, the snapping sound would have garnered the other’s suspicion. However, at the same time, An Xuan had exposed himself. At least the others knew that he and Zuo Qing entered the nightmare together. But, so what?

In any case, the evidence preserved by Zuo Qing before her death was enough to pinpoint the killer. There was a wooden segment in her palm. Why would Zuo Qing spit out the segment and hold it in her hand?

The segment had to carry special significance. It was her dying message. It was her soundless accusation against her killer!

“It’s You Qi,” Xia Meng said grimly. After some time, An Xuan finally nodded. He didn’t look conventionally sad. At least he didn’t cry or look pained. He just sat there quietly. However, Xia Meng felt him to be greatly unapproachable. She was not familiar with An Xuan and Zuo Qing. It was a temporary cooperation. She also didn’t know the relationship between An Xuan and Zuo Qing. However, based on the man’s relationship, the two should be close. She was astute enough not to disturb him… because it was unnecessary.

“Help me,” An Xuan suddenly said.

“Help you keep an eye on Jiang Cheng.” Xia Meng was not surprised. Their conversation was as light as air. “To ensure that he doesn’t get in your way.”

An Xuan nodded. “Thank you.”

Xia Meng sighed and looked out the window. She continued in a rare tone, “Do whatever you need to do.” She placed her hands behind her head. “I don’t see anything.” She looked An Xuan in his face. “I don’t hear anything. When we’re out, and people ask me how You Qi died, I don’t know anything. Or…” She thought about it, “I could say it was Jiang Cheng who killed him… He and Fatty worked together.”

“That will bring you troubles.” Xia Meng watched him pick up the segment and put it back in his pocket. He turned back to say, “I’d advise you not to do that.”

Xia Meng looked at him strangely. “Why?”

“Jiang Cheng’s identity is unique.” An Xuan paused before resuming, “In this mission, his survivability has a higher priority than yours.”

Xia Meng’s face dropped. Just as she was about to ask another question, she was interrupted by An Xuan. He spoke rapidly as if giving his last explanation, “In other words, we can sacrifice ourselves for you. Similarly, your sacrifice is necessary if his life is threatened.”

“Why?” Xia Meng pressed, “Who gave this order? Is it your superior?”

An Xuan shook his head. “No.” He looked into her eyes. “It’s higher.”

Xia Meng’s heart trembled.

Moments later…

“Why are you telling me this?” Xia Meng held his gaze, “These… should be confidential.” Xia Meng knew a bit about the night guardians’ history. It was a history carved by blood. To maintain such a large organization, they had to rely on both strong determination but also ironclad rules.

According to legends, there was a group of people within the organisation who were set up to handle the members who didn’t follow the rules. Their methods were apparently inspired by medieval tortures.

“Consider it your payment for helping me.” An Xuan’s calm tone cleared up some of Xia Meng’s discomfort, “Plus, you must have realised how unique Jiang Cheng is, right?”@@novelbin@@

Many images from their previous missions flashed in her mind. She didn’t trust easily, but she couldn’t find a reason for An Xuan to lie to her. After all, after this cooperation, they would never see each other again.

“That is all I can say.” An Xuan didn’t look at Xia Meng but instead looked out the window. The leaves rustled. “That is all I know.”

Xia Meng pursed her lips as she glared at him. The message he had was completely different from what she got. Before the mission started, Uncle Gong told her something different. Based on the agreement, she was the core. Deep Red’s target was her. That was why her survival priority should be the highest. Before the mission, she had done all the preparations. She had three cards.

Jiang Cheng and Fatty were her open cards. They were there to share the mal-intention from the ghost, NPC and the other travellers.

The newspaper was a hidden card. She would share it when she could get the greatest advantage from it.

Then, her final cards were An Xuan and Zuo Qing. The two agents from the night guardian’s executive department were like killers hidden in the dark. She would not use them unless it were absolutely necessary.

They only had one goal.

Deep Red.

They were created to deal with Deep Red. It was why they participated in this mission.
