Chapter 342: Door
Chapter 342: Door
“Number?”
“A00131.”
“Visitation target?”
“B04149.”
“Where’s the approval slip?” The man’s tone became serious. “Please understand. Even though your personal accessibility level is high, the visitation…”
BEEP
The guard in the blue uniform received a message. He looked at the screen on his wristwatch, and his face dropped. “No. A00131, your visitation application has been approved. However, please follow the rules here. Singular visitation hours cannot be more than 30 minutes. You cannot have intimate interaction with the target. You cannot mention…”
“Thank you.” Before he finished, the young man before him pushed the door and walked through it. Then, he closed it.
He raised his eyes, and his gaze trembled. Even though he’d come here after every mission, he’d be assaulted by disappointment whenever he saw this. It was the same. A man with listless eyes lay on an iron bed. His limbs were bound by white straps. His neck was fixed in place by a soft leather belt. All he could move was his eyes.
An Xuan pulled the stool over and sat before the man. This was his former teammate. He was younger than An Xuan, but based on how he looked, people would believe if they said he was over fifty. At this place, he was barely alive. Dignity was a luxury. The eyeballs of the man in bed slowly moved in response to his visitor. They stopped on An Xuan’s face.
“Wu Tong is dead,” An Xuan suddenly said. The man’s face twitched, but soon, it returned to nothingness. The effect of the tranquiliser was still there. To ease the control of these former elites, the manager of this hospital had to increase the dosage of the tranquiliser continuously. After all, one of them managed to tear through the straps when he went berserk. Eight people could not hold him down. If not for the quick thinking of the guard, the consequences would be unimaginable. The orders from above were direct. These people could die, but they couldn’t be let loose. Once these people escaped their control, their impact on society would be insane.
“I know you can understand me.” An Xuan continued, “They said you have lost your mind, but I don’t believe it.” He shook his head. “You just cannot control yourself. You are not crazy. You can remember me, Wu Tong, Zhou Qin… You remember every one of us.” As An Xuan listed off the names, light appeared in the man’s eyes. It was barely discernible, but An Xuan caught it.
“I killed Wu Tong’s killer.” He sighed, “I used their favourite method. You know how I am with things.” An Xuan smiled as life returned minutely to the man. “Why could they do such things, but we can’t? Unfortunately, he was just another admirer.” He reached out to hold the man’s finger, which was exposed through the bindings. “I know the person who killed Zhou Qin and wiped out your team must have come from the real Deep Red. Don’t worry. I’ll find him… and then apply on him the pain that you’ve suffered several times over.
“I’m not lying to you. We already have some clues.” He patted the man’s hand. “You just wait.”
A light blue light beside the bed blinked three times.
This was the notice that visitation hour was over. His time was up.
“I’m leaving.” He stood up. “I’ll come back to visit next time.” As he was about to pull his hand back, he realised the man gripped his fingertip tightly. The man’s eyes changed. It was covered in blood. The veins popped on his face. His muscles bulged. The straps on the restraints creaked. The guards, who saw this from the surveillance, hit the alarm. Instantly, all the monitors in the corridor lit up with warnings. However, it was still quiet. The atmosphere became heavy with nervousness.
The special unit medics in light blue uniforms rushed into the room, accompanied by armoured guards. The crazed man was pressed down. He was forced to accept another injection of tranquiliser. Even so, three men could barely hold him down. Two more guards joined the effort. The iron bed creaked from the action.
An Xuan was escorted out of the room.
“What’s going on?” A man with a light green chest pin stared at An Xuan as he gasped for air. Even through the thick quarantine outfit, the man’s sweat on his face could be seen. The pin didn’t designate the man’s name. It only had his number. The number included information about his level and accessibility. The man was on the same level as An Xuan. That was the reason why he didn’t instantly have the guards haul An Xuan out.
However, this was the man’s territory. Even the people from the executive branch couldn’t intervene. However, the man didn’t want to offend the executive people. After all, they were required to deal with Deep Red.
“What did you do to him?” He frowned and stared into An Xuan’s eyes, trying to gauge if he was lying.
An Xuan shook his head calmly, “Nothing.”
“Then, why would he suddenly lose control?”
“No clue.”
Soon, a man with a blue mask exited the room and ran over. He removed the mask and said, “His… conditions have worsened. It’s as if… he has interacted with those things… Maybe one week ago…” He stopped talking because he noticed An Xuan was staring quietly at him.
The man with the green pin pulled him to the side and enquired, “What is going on?”
“This should be the lingering effect from the incident last week.” The masked man said, “There were a lot of people who went berserk that time. A batch of them was near this room. He probably interacted with them then, but the level was so low. It didn’t show up in our inspection.”
“Damn it!” The man with the pin cursed. “Go send that man away.” He ordered, “Then, get all the teams to quarantine this place. Everyone has to be inspected, no matter how they perform recently.”
“Understood.”
An Xuan was escorted out of the building. The guard was very polite to An Xuan. They were of the same age, but one of them was Level A, and the other was Level D.
“This is the bathroom. I’ll wait for you outside,” The guard said.
An Xuan nodded. “Thank you.” After he entered the bathroom, An Xuan walked to the last cubicle and locked the door. The next moment, he leaned on the door, and his pupils shrunk. His body trembled uncontrollably. Blood took over his eyes. He tried his best to suppress his breathing as his heart pounded. He raised his shaking hands. A door slowly surfaced on them.
“Is this… the price…”
What do you think?
