CHAPTER 200 - The Spirit.
The graveyard stood still, eerily silent after the desperate cry. A faint gust of wind carried the scent of aged stone and forgotten memories.
Alex lowered the controller slightly, his sharp eyes scanning the dimly lit tombstones as a shadow stirred within the cemetery's depths.
Then, emerging from the darkness, she appeared.
Purple hair, flowing as if caught in an eternal breeze, cascaded down her back. Her crimson eyes glowed with an undeniable authority, her presence demanding attention. Everything about her screamed intimidation, dominance, and ancient power.
...or at least, it should have.
She was clearly the one whose painting Alex had seen in one of the hallways in the palace, also the one whom Lilia had been chasing traces of, but what actually stepped out... was a chibi.
A tiny child-like figure, no taller than Alex's waist, stood with an air of utter devastation. Her regal robes billowed dramatically, though her small stature made it look more like a toddler wearing oversized clothes.
The way her robes flew in majesty made Alex question himself. 'Is she really using magic to do that?'
He couldn't believe someone would do that just because they wanted to make a grand entrance.
"Stop! You can't destroy this place!" The chibi, on the other hand, declared, her voice firm but high-pitched. "If you do, I will... I will...!"
She trailed off as her eyes darted between Alex and Lilia, and for the first time, true fear flashed across her doll-like face.
They looked like giants in front of her.
'W-What the hell?! Are all people these days so large?!' She roared in her head, unable to understand why these guys looked so big. From what she remembered, they weren't this big.
However, she didn't get time to think deeply about it, as Alex crossed his arms, unimpressed. "You will what?"
Hearing those words, her eyes quivered as she tried to come up with words, huffing rapidly as she tried again.
"I—I will curse you!" Stomping her tiny foot, she sharply pointed her finger at Alex. "Yes! A terrible curse! You will never be able to—"
Alex stared at her, dry-eyed, bringing the control close to his lips. "Shatt—"
"WAIT!" The chibi lunged forward as she heard Alex's words, interrupting him, clinging onto his leg in sheer panic. "Please! Please listen to me first! I'm sorry! Please don't destroy this place!"
Tears welled up in her eyes. A second later, snot started flowing as well, and before Alex could react, she buried her tiny face against his pants, sobbing. "I take it back! I take it all back! I shouldn't have tried to scam you! I shouldn't have tried to make you swear loyalty! Please, please don't do this!"
Lilia blinked, completely caught off guard. "Is she... crying on your leg?"
Alex exhaled through his nose, resisting the urge to pry the spirit off. "Unfortunately, yes."
"What do you know?!" Raising her head, the chibi sobbed. "I'm linked to this graveyard! If you destroy it, I will be wiped from existence!"
"I get it," Lilia stared down at the chibi, her gaze condescending. "But it's just pathetic."
"I can hear you!" The chibi wailed louder. "I was once the strongest! The greatest! And now look at me!"
Alex jerked his leg, trying to separate himself from the chibi, but she just held tighter. "Please, don't do this! I'll give you anything! Treasures! Knowledge! Rare artifacts! You name it!"
Alex glanced down at the sobbing mess attached to his leg. "You sure about that?"
The chibi spirit nodded furiously, her face still buried against him. "Yes! Anything!"
Sophie's voice rang in his mind. [She's... not what we expected her to be,] she muttered. [But I guess this is better.]
'We can't be sure yet,' Alex replied, not wanting to believe that this was all there was to it.@@novelbin@@
From what Sophie had found the voice when he was offered a chance, she had told him that the voice belonged to an entity that was very powerful in the past, but since a long time had passed, their power fell.
Sophie told him that the only reason this entity could access his mind space was because she could still remember the feeling of being all-powerful, but that was all—just a feeling.
The owner of that voice was the chibi in front of him.
She had tried to do something very similar to the voice Alex had heard in Luminous Village, but unfortunately or fortunately, she couldn't copy the original. Her mimic was nowhere near as perfect as the one Alex had faced in the Luminous Village.
The only reason Alex could forcefully eject her out of his mind space was because she was weak. This chibi was so weak that Alex could easily kill her right now.
'For all we know, she might be pretending.' Alex completed his words, not taking things lightly.
She might seem like a harmless entity right now, but she was once strong enough to wipe Alex off the floor without much effort. No one knew what kind of truth she might be hiding.
The best Alex could do was remain vigilant, so his eyes narrowed as he asked a question. "Then why did you try to make me swear loyalty to you before?"
The spirit stiffened, her gaze lowering. She couldn't come up with perfect words, but she quickly composed herself.
Pulling back just enough to meet his gaze, the chibi sniffled and adopted an exaggeratedly polite tone. "Oh, well, you see, it was all in good faith. I simply wanted to ensure that my one and only future successor would have a talented, reliable subordi—cough—friend such as you."
Lilia, standing next to Alex, frowned. "Subordinate?"
She didn't know what was happening since she didn't know anything about Alex or Lucian hearing the chibi's voice before. She just understood that the chibi in front of them seemed to have tried something bad against Alex.
Alex sighed. "So, basically, you only had one inheritance, but my talent was too much to pass up. You wanted your chosen heir to have at least one good... servant."
The chibi avoided Alex's eyes, her toe tracing the ground. "Um... yes," she nodded, her voice barely above a whisper.
Lilia's, however, had her expression darkened. "And who is this successor of yours?"
The chibi puffed out her chest with exaggerated pride. "It's—"
"If it's Lucian, you can forget about it," Lilia interrupted, her voice turning ice cold. "He's already dead."
"Oh, no, no! Not him!" The chibi waved her tiny hands frantically. "It's you!"
Lilia's mouth opened, but no words came out.
Her expression shifted from anger to confusion, then to sheer disbelief. "Wait... what?"
The chibi beamed. "You! You are my successor!"

Lilia stared at her, then at Alex.
Then back at the chibi.
Then, very slowly, she raised a finger and pointed at herself. "Me?"
The chibi nodded so vigorously that she resembled a pecking bird. "Yes! Yes! You!"
Lilia turned to Alex, face blank.
Alex chuckled. "Yeah, seems like it."
Lilia blinked. "Huh."
The wind rustled the graveyard.
The chibi sniffled again.
And then, without warning, Lilia groaned, rubbing her temples. "This is not the way I was expecting to acquire the inheritance..."
What do you think?
