Chapter 43: Understanding Mana
As Serena explained the importance of intent in spellcasting, Kael’s mind buzzed with newfound clarity.
The missing piece to his magic wasn’t raw power or perfect execution but the intent—the driving force and conviction behind his actions.
"Intent is what breathes life into the lifeless," Serena had said. It resonated deeply with Kael.
He thought back to the times when his spells faltered.
It wasn’t just a lack of precision but the absence of a deeper purpose behind them.
’If I want to amplify my spells, I need to sharpen my focus, align my thoughts with my intent. Only then can I truly grow,’ Kael resolved.
His thoughts were interrupted by the sound of hurried footsteps.
Step- step
"Kael! You won’t believe this!" Ren practically barreled toward him, grinning ear to ear like a child who had discovered a hidden stash of candy.
"What is it now, Ren?" Kael said.
Ren stopped in front of him, barely catching his breath.
"Tomorrow. Mixed class. With S Section–B!" he exclaimed, his excitement infectious.
Kael tilted his head, unimpressed.
"Oh. Is that so?" he replied nonchalantly, his focus clearly still on his earlier thoughts about intent.
Ren’s jaw dropped in exaggerated disbelief.
"Oh? Oh?! That’s all you’ve got to say?" he yelled, flailing his arms dramatically.
"You’ve got the—" Ren paused, leaning in with a mischievous grin. "You’ve got the celestial rose in that section!"
Kael blinked, his expression blank. "The celestial what now?"
Ren rolled his eyes as if Kael had just committed the most heinous crime imaginable. "Lumia!" he said, shaking Kael’s shoulders.
"The most beautiful girl in the academy! Her beauty is said to rival the moon’s glow, her presence a divine gift we mere mortals can never touch!"
Kael sighed deeply. "What the actual hell, Ren. Get a grip."
But Ren wasn’t done.
"Not just her! You’ve also got the tempest herself, Aveline! The wild, untouchable storm of S Section-B! A force of nature with silver hair and eyes sharp enough to cut through steel."
"Do you now realize how lucky we are?" with this Ren ended his speech.
Kael’s patience was running thin.
"Ren," he said, voice heavy with warning,
"get your ass to the training ground before I fuck you here myself."
Ren smirked, unbothered by the threat. "Oh, Kael, I didn’t know you swung that way. If it’s me you’re after, I might consider it. I mean, with your face, it wouldn’t be the worst thing—"
Before he could finish, Marcus appeared behind him .
With an almost imperceptible nod, Marcus said, "I support this pairing."
Ren, placed a hand over his chest dramatically. "Oh, Marcus, you too? How touching. Don’t worry, Kael, I won’t fight it if you two start fighting over me."
Kael sighed deeply, muttering, "I’m surrounded by idiots."
______
Kael sat cross-legged on the floor of secluded room within the academy’s training center.
His hands were placed gently on his knees.
This was the perfect place to hone his focus, free from distractions.
But despite the quiet, despite the stillness of the room, Kael’s mind was anything but calm.
"What the fuck is wrong with me?"
No matter how hard he tried, his concentration kept slipping.
It was as though the mana inside him was rebelling, refusing to listen to his commands.
Kael gritted his teeth, sweat beginning to form on his brow.
He clenched his fists, trying to focus harder.
Focus on the mana. Let it flow through you... You need to control it. Don’t force it, just let it be.
But it wasn’t working.
The swirling energy inside him felt chaotic, untamed, as if it had a life of its own, defying every attempt he made to reign it in.
"Gods, why is this so difficult?" Kael muttered under his breath, slamming his fist into the floor in frustration.
It had been hours since he’d entered the room.
With effort, Kael closed his eyes and visualized his mana.
He pictured it as a swirling vortex, erratic and uncontrollable, and then imagined it slowing, calming.
The task seemed simple, yet each attempt only brought more resistance.
His mana didn’t obey his will; it fought back.
His breath slowed, a deep exhale as Kael tried again.
He pictured his mana as a storm, but this time, he imagined becoming one with that storm.
Instead of trying to control the raging winds, he tried to move with them, allowing himself to ride the waves of energy...
--
Outside the room
"Marcus, you better not be holding back, you bastard!"
As then Ren shoot another pair of arrows toward Marcus.
But with a quick sidestep, Marcus easily dodged it.
Ren scowled. ’Too slow.’
He pulled back another arrow, launching it at Marcus again, this time aimed for his chest.
"You’ll need more than that," Marcus called out, stepping to the side and narrowly avoiding the arrow.
"Come on, Ren. That’s all you’ve got?"
Ren grinned. "You’re getting cocky, Marcus. Let’s see how long that lasts."
Marcus knew Ren was fast with that bow, but Marcus had dealt with archers before.
Ren released another arrow, but Marcus was already moving.
With a single fluid motion, he ducked and sidestepped, narrowly avoiding the projectile.
"You’re gonna need more than that, Ren," Marcus called out.
Ren fired another, but this time he had more force behind it.
Marcus could feel the intensity of the attack, so he used his sword to block it.
"Still not fast enough," Marcus smirked, his eyes locked on Ren. He wasn’t worried.
"You’re not thinking, Ren. You’re just shooting to shoot."
Ren, clearly annoyed, shot back,
"You think you’ve got me figured out? I’m just getting started!"
Marcus twirled his sword, a faint chuckle escaping his lips.
"Let’s see how long you can keep this up before you tire out...
"Hey, both of you stop now, it’s enough. Any more and you’ll tear your bodies apart."Kael called out while leaning against the doorframe,
Both Ren and Marcus paused mid-motion, surprised by the interruption.
They took a moment to catch their breath, and then, in unison, they responded
"Yes, sir."
Kael couldn’t help but smirk at their reactions.
Kael gaze shifted to Marcus.
"Did you manage to control your mana?" Marcus asked.
"Hmmm," Kael muttered thoughtfully as he ran a hand through his hair.
"I got a few ideas on it, but I’m not quite there yet."
Marcus nodded slowly, understanding the difficulty in Kael’s words. "It’s not something you can just rush."
"Hmmm" Kael muttered.
"Let’s grab something to eat first, we’ll talk about it while eating" Ren said.
What do you think?
