Chapter 227: Mission

[Easiest-Level Missions]

"The Lost baby spirit beast Retrieval Mission": A young disciple's beloved spirit beast, a mischievous creature with a penchant for exploring, had wandered off into the surrounding forest. This mission required a team of cultivators to search for and retrieve the lost puppy.

"The Pest Control Mission": A plague of insects had infested the sect's rice paddies, threatening the food supply. This mission required a team of cultivators to eliminate the pests using simple cultivation techniques, such as water-based spells to flood the affected areas.

"The Missing Artifacts Retrieval Mission": A set of scrolls, containing valuable historical records, had gone missing from the sect library of a mountain sect. This mission required a team of disciples to search the surrounding areas and recover the missing artifacts.

"The Mountain Maintenance Mission": A small landslide had blocked a vital path within the sect grounds, hindering the flow of supplies and hindering the movement of disciples. This mission required a team of disciples to clear the debris and restore the path to its original condition.

Ye Yang carefully considered each mission, weighing the risks and rewards. The high-level missions were undoubtedly challenging, offering the potential for significant rewards and valuable experience.

However, he felt a sense of caution, remembering the dangers he had faced during his initial trials.

The moderate-level missions seemed more appropriate for his current level of experience. They offered a good balance of challenge and risk, allowing him to test his skills while minimizing the potential for serious injury.

He spent a long time pondering his decision, carefully weighing the pros and cons of each mission. The final decision was a difficult one, but ultimately, he felt a sense of excitement and anticipation for the challenges that lay ahead.

Ye Yang, his gaze sweeping across the board, dismissed the "Dangerous and High-Level Missions" with a shake of his head.

The allure of those missions, with their promises of immense rewards and unparalleled glory, was undeniable.

But the stark reminder of his own fledgling cultivation and the vivid memories of his near-death experiences during his initial trials instilled a healthy dose of caution. He couldn't afford to be reckless, not yet.

He turned his attention to the "Moderate-Level Missions," each one a tantalizing proposition. The "Bandit Suppression Mission" appealed to his sense of justice, the thought of bringing down a notorious gang of criminals exciting.

However, he worried about the potential for ambush and the unpredictable nature of bandit encounters.

The "Missing Caravan Search Mission" intrigued him; the thrill of the unknown, the challenge of navigating treacherous terrain, and the possibility of encountering unexpected dangers all added to its allure.

Yet, the mission lacked a clear objective beyond simply finding the caravan, leaving him uncertain about the rewards and the potential for personal growth.

The "Spirit Herb Gathering Mission" presented a unique challenge. The allure of a life-extending herb, the thrill of a daring climb, and the opportunity to deepen his understanding of herbalism were all highly appealing.

However, the risks were significant: a single misstep could lead to a fatal fall, and the competition for the herb, both from other cultivators and the dangers of the cliff face itself, could be fierce.

Ye Yang scrutinized the remaining option, the "Monster Extermination Mission." The prospect of combating a swarm of mutated spiders, while undeniably dangerous, offered several advantages.

Firstly, it provided a clear and defined objective: eliminate the threat. Secondly, the mission emphasized teamwork and the coordinated use of cultivation techniques, allowing him to learn and grow alongside other disciples.

He considered the "Easiest-Level Missions," but quickly dismissed them. The "Lost Baby Spirit Beast Retrieval Mission," while seemingly harmless, felt trivial and beneath his aspirations.

The "Pest Control Mission" sounded more like a chore than a challenging endeavour.

The "Missing Artifacts Retrieval Mission" lacked the excitement and potential for personal growth that he sought. And the "Mountain Maintenance Mission," while necessary, felt more like a community service project than a true cultivation mission.

After much deliberation, Ye Yang decided to focus his attention back on the "Moderate-Level Missions," particularly the "Monster Extermination Mission."

It offered a balanced blend of challenge and risk, a chance to hone his skills, and an opportunity to contribute to the well-being of the sect.

As he pondered his decision, a voice broke through his thoughts. "Excuse me, fellow disciple," a man's voice inquired.

Ye Yang turned to see a group of four disciples approaching him.

The man who had spoken, a tall and imposing figure with a confident air, was accompanied by another male disciple and three female disciples, all of them radiating an aura of high-level cultivator that marked them as Inner Disciples.

"Are you perhaps considering joining a team for the 'Monster Extermination Mission'?" the man inquired. "We're currently looking for one more member to complete our group."

Ye Yang, surprised by the unexpected offer, replied politely, "Greetings, senior disciple. Yes, I was indeed considering that mission."

"Excellent," the man smiled. "I'm Lin Jian, and these are my fellow disciples: Li Mei, Chen Hao, Xiao Yu, and Mei Lin." He gestured towards his companions.

Ye Yang returned the greetings, feeling a surge of excitement. "Greetings, seniors. I'm Ye Yang. I joined the sect only a year ago, so please bear with me if I lack experience."

Lin Jian nodded understandingly. "No worries, we're all about mutual assistance and growth. Besides, a fresh perspective can be invaluable."

With a shared nod of agreement, Lin Jian selected the jade slip for the "Monster Extermination Mission," activating the mission acceptance protocol.

A surge of information, including the location of the corrupted spirit vein and the expected dangers, flooded Ye Yang's mind.

And so, with a sense of anticipation and a touch of apprehension, Ye Yang joined his newfound companions, setting off towards the corrupted spirit vein, ready to face the challenges that awaited them.

The journey to the corrupted spirit vein was an eye-opening experience for Ye Yang.

He had never before flown on a sword, his previous travels limited to walking or riding on mundane beasts.

As Mei Lin patiently guided him through the intricate movements and subtle energy control required to maintain balance and control his speed, Ye Yang felt a surge of exhilaration.

"Relax, Ye Yang," Mei Lin encouraged, her voice calm and soothing. "Imagine you're simply walking on air. Just let the Qi flow naturally through your limbs."

With her gentle guidance and the encouraging smiles from the rest of the group, Ye Yang slowly began to find his rhythm.

The initial fear of falling gave way to a sense of wonder as he soared through the air, the wind whistling past his ears.

He marvelled at the breathtaking scenery below – rolling hills, dense forests, and sparkling rivers – a view he had never experienced before.

Despite his initial struggles, they managed to reach the vicinity of the corrupted spirit vein within ten hours, a journey that would have taken six or seven hours for more experienced disciples.

Lin Jian, ever the pragmatist, simply smiled and said, "Don't worry, Ye Yang. We've all been there. It takes time and practice."

Chen Hao, ever the joker, quipped, "Don't worry, Ye Yang. You're flying like a drunken butterfly right now, but soon you'll be soaring like an eagle!"

Ye Yang, feeling a blush creeping up his neck, chuckled, "Thanks, Chen Hao. I'll do my best."

The corrupted spirit vein was an eerie sight. An old, excavated site, it was a gaping maw in the earth, the surrounding vegetation withered and blackened. The air hung heavy with a strange, poisonous scent.

"This place hasn't been active for over a century," Lin Jian observed, his brow furrowed. "Seems like the spirit vein has somehow rejuvenated itself, and the spiders have mutated as a result."

They cautiously approached the entrance to the cave, the air growing thick with the sound of a thousand tiny legs skittering. The cave mouth was obscured by a thick curtain of spider silk, shimmering iridescent in the sunlight.

Lin Jian, ever the cautious leader, signalled for everyone to prepare their weapons. "Be vigilant," he warned. "These spiders are not to be underestimated."

With a concerted effort, they pushed through the silken curtain, revealing a dark, cavernous entrance.

Inside, the air was thick with dust and the faint, poisonous tang of spider venom.

Using their cultivation techniques to illuminate the darkness, they discovered that the cave extended deep into the earth, divided into three distinct layers.

"This is going to be tricky," Li Mei observed, her eyes scanning the cavern. "We need to be methodical in our approach. Perhaps we should explore each layer systematically."

Lin Jian nodded in agreement. "A good plan. We'll proceed with caution, communicating constantly. Remember, teamwork is key."

With renewed determination, the group delved deeper into the cave, the echoes of their footsteps and the rustling of spider silk their only companions in the eerie silence.

The first layer was a labyrinth of narrow tunnels, teeming with swarms of ordinary spiders. They dispatched them with ease, using a combination of swift sword strikes and coordinated attacks.

"Seems like the more inside we venture, the more venomous it will become," Mei Lin spoke, "Let's use Qi to remove poison from our bodies and replenish our Qi periodically as we move forward."

She took out a Qi replenishing pill and popped it into her mouth. The others quickly followed suit, ensuring they were prepared for any unforeseen circumstances.

Ye Yang saw this and smiled wryly as he realized he hadn't brought any such pills.

"Junior Brother, don't you need one?" Lin Jian asked, noticing Ye Yang's empty hands.

Ye Yang sheepishly admitted, "I... I forgot to bring any."

Mei Lin, with a mischievous glint in her eyes, pulled out a few pills and handed them to Ye Yang. "Here you go. You're now indebted to me, Junior Brother."
