Chapter 663: 472. Reaping Souls
Sophia quickly retrieved the memory of the book she had once read from her Memory Palace.
It wasn't a specialized book on military strategy, and could even be considered merely a form of entertainment, not serious literature.
"Adventurer's Diary," that was the name of the book—a well-known author from the Witch World had written it, but even the author said that the experiences recounted were just tales she had heard while idling in taverns listening to various witches chit-chat, later embellishing these tavern tales slightly to write the book.
So, one could regard this book as a collection of stories. Some elements of the stories might hold some value for reference, but others might just be drunken blather from intoxicated witches—please don't take them too seriously.
Given the Pure White Witch's personality, she wouldn't normally read such entertaining literature, but her teacher enjoyed them, hence she always subscribed to the complete set of "Adventurer's Diary," even one volume titled "Dragon Queen" was about the teacher's own story.
Therefore, Sophia still managed to squeeze out a little bit of free time to finish what had now become almost two hundred volumes of this massive anthology.
As for the review, well, how should I put it?
If taken as pure stories, the book is beyond reproach, whether it is the plot structure, the author's writing style, or the unique worldviews of the various worlds described—all of these are top-notch.
Moreover, with the book's mix of truth and fiction, some witches with insufficient experience and knowledge might not be able to discern whether it's fact or fabrication.
However, Sophia clearly wasn't going to be fooled. At a glance, she judged that about sixty to seventy percent of the content was false, with only about thirty to forty percent being true. This wasn't surprising, after all, since it's a collection of tavern tales—what else could one expect from a bunch of drunk witches?
Among these tales, the story of the "Master of Miracles" was one that Sophia had once categorized as a fictitious episode.
In this story, the protagonist was an Armed Witch who was assigned by her massive guild to a small world on a mission to develop that world.
Of course, to put it nicely, it's called world development, but to be blunt, well, those who understand would know what it really means.
This was supposed to be a very common and simple task. After all, the protagonist was a top-ranked Great Witch with a title, whose strength was more than enough to single-handedly conquer a small world without any help, let alone the support of a massive armed guild.
But this time, the protagonist ran into trouble. She not only failed to complete the mission but also almost lost her own life in that small world because she encountered the so-called "Master of Miracles."
"I know you may not believe everything I say, but I swear on my honor that everything I've outlined is true."
"Can you imagine? A small world that was originally fragmented and embroiled in conflict suddenly and inexplicably unified within just a few years. All the races united together, enemies who should have been sworn rivals set aside their past grievances. To see crude Orcs becoming close friends with proud Elves—it's simply too un-magical."
....
"Do you know what it feels like to be an enemy of an entire world? I entered that world full of confidence, only to be utterly baffled by a whopper of a challenge. The whole world rejected me; every plant and tree was my enemy. It was terrifying."
"I used every possible method to divide the alliance, but it was all in vain. I orchestrated a bloody massacre, trying to teach these insects what fear was, but in the end, I was the one who became afraid. Have you ever seen an army that could march to death laughing and singing battle songs together? No matter what I tried, I couldn't incite fear in any of them."
"Even with my great Strength, I felt that any of them could have surpassed me in willpower."
....
"Alright, you can mock me all you want. I am indeed a failure who almost fell into a trap. That swarm of insects first sacrificed a tenth of the entire world's population to gather intelligence on me, then they sacrificed half of the world and its creatures to set a trap tailored for me. If it weren't for their narrow vision limiting their thoughts, and I had not kept my trump card unused, they might have succeeded."
"Really, I've fought battles all my life and never encountered an enemy so ruthless to themselves and their foe. I even saw the shadow of the God King's rise in this small world; they had the potential to become the next great Calamity after becoming witches."
"In the end, I was truly frightened and fled from the trap. I contacted the Guild headquarters and directly requested the intervention of the four club presidents, who represent the Peak. They turned the whole world into an eternal specimen."
........
"However, I've always been curious as to why the small world underwent such a change. After years of research, I can only attribute it to a miracle."
"In my opinion, the birth of such a Master of Miracles requires three conditions: a tremendous calamity, a once-in-a-lifetime hero, and the thought of a miracle—and none of these can be absent."
What do you think?
