Chapter 195 Hop, Skip, & a Jump to the Abyss
Simultaneously, just as the shift in the Life Core occurred inside his mind, Ian suddenly felt a slight headache, and his eyes, which had been blue earlier, turned completely pitch black in an instant.
"Hehe... mine, mine, mine, everything is mine."
"Help!"
"Crkk... Crkkl..."
"Death can never stop me!"
"Hungry..."
"Why live when you know you will die anyway?"
"HELP! Hooman!"
After his transformation, the first thing Ian noticed was the distinct sound of crying, laughing, and pleading, which had previously been mere whispers but were now as clear as if spoken right beside him.
The eerie cacophony of voices layered over each other, overlapping and twisting into something unnatural. It was as if countless souls were trapped in an endless wail, each one locked in their final moments of agony or madness.
"Fuck!"
Such a sudden influx of various noises in an instant bombarding his mind made Ian's head throb, so he immediately blocked the noise using his mental power. The moment the voices were suppressed, a sense of clarity returned, allowing him to focus once again.
'Hah... hah... finally better. What was that?' Ian thought.
As soon as he used his mental power to suppress the influence in his mind, he felt relieved and was finally able to look ahead, albeit in confusion.
However, what he saw in front of him left him even more bewildered.
Corpses. Floating corpses—countless in number. Everywhere he looked, the remains of humans, monsters, and unknown entities filled the space.
Some looked fresh, their expressions frozen in their last moments of horror, while others were skeletal remains, stripped of all but remnants of flesh. Explore more stories at My Virtual Library Empire
Dark, unrecognizable creatures with twisted limbs and hollowed-out faces drifted among them, their presence alone exuding an aura of dread.
Ian couldn't determine whether the corpses were real or ethereal, as everything appeared just as tangible as Ignysyl, who was busy using his power to forcefully close the portal.
And not surprisingly, what was stopping Ignysyl from doing so, was nothing more than dark skeletal arms densely wrapped around the portal, halting its closure.
The arms extended from the void itself, some appearing human-like while others were grotesquely elongated, their fingers tipped with jagged, broken nails. They grasped the edges of the rift with a vice-like grip, seemingly defying all logic as they held open a tear in the very fabric of reality.
It was an eerie sight.
These skeletal arms were not stopping a physical door but gripping the very fabric of space itself with their bare hands.
Had Ian not witnessed it with his own eyes, he would never have believed it.
"Agh, hurry! It's already reaching the zone. Its presence is tearing through my Rule, and I can't close it in time!"
Just as Ian was taking in the surreal scene before him, Ignysyl's urgent shout snapped him out of his daze.
The little dragon's usually proud and fiery demeanor was now nowhere to be seen and was replaced with a look of sheer frustration and anxiousness.
His small body continuously pulsed with waves of mana, but no matter how much he pushed against the force holding the portal open, it barely budged.
'Now isn't the time to be distracted.'
Ian quickly gathered his thoughts and scanned his surroundings, searching for a way to assist Ignysyl.
"Hm?"
Only then did Ian notice that, just like the portal, Ignysyl was also being swarmed by grotesque skeletal arms that were steadily eroding the blue and red aura surrounding him.
'So, this form lets me see things that are otherwise invisible, huh?'
Ian realized that the more the skeletal arms drained Ignysyl's aura, the more strained he became.
Moreover, the dense mass of arms around the portal was slowly widening the gate, applying a force Ian couldn't comprehend.
'But how am I supposed to get up there?'
Ian frowned as he realized a major problem—he needed to be near Ignysyl to help him, but both the portal and the dragon were hovering in the air.
Unfortunately, Ian didn't know any floating spells.
'Wait... maybe I can touch them. What if I use them as steps?'
His gaze then suddenly shifted to the skeletal figures floating around him, separate from the ones clustered around the portal and Ignysyl.
They were positioned perfectly for him to use as stepping stones in midair; well weren't perfect but he could do with it.
So, without hesitation, Ian decided to act.
"Swoosh!"
However, out of caution, he first leaped onto a skeletal arm that was floating at a lower height. And the moment he landed, the arm wobbled slightly, but it held firm carrying his weight in the air.
"Hey, it actually works!"
Ian couldn't help but shout in surprise as he landed steadily on the detached arm.
If anyone had been watching him, they would have thought he was levitating with some kind of magic.
"Hey! Why are you playing around now? Don't you see I'm already at my wit's end?!"
Ignysyl, who had been keeping an eye on Ian's movements, saw him jumping through the air and shouting in surprise.
Finally, he couldn't stand it and urged him to hurry, feeling himself losing control of his Rule by the second.
The pressure was also growing stronger.
And from what he could sense, there was no doubt in his mind—the entity beyond the portal would hunt him down the moment it became aware of him.
'Damn it! Why does it have to be the Grave Whisperer of all Maleficent?! Isn't this the one my bloodline specifically warned me never to encounter without absolute strength?'
Ignysyl broke into a cold sweat, his body tense with dread. If not for Ian and their primal bond, he would have already fled this place without hesitation.
He was indeed a loyal dragon.
"Tch... why are you whining like a baby? Aren't you a mighty dragon? Look at you, does this really suit you?"
With his plan in place, Ian suddenly relaxed and even found the time to joke, causing Ignysyl to stare at him speechlessly.
'Is this really the time for jokes?'
The dragon couldn't believe it.
He knew that Ian might have some plan after seeing his pitch-black eyes.
So, he could only watch as Ian hopped from one floating skeletal limb to another, making his way toward the portal; although in his vision he saw Ian hopping in the naked air.
Meanwhile, the poor demon trapped within the portal hadn't stopped howling for even a second.
It was such a bizarre sight that Ignysyl momentarily forgot to use his abilities. Fortunately, he snapped out of it in time.@@novelbin@@
"Okay, don't look at me like that. Just endure a bit longer. I'll do something, and once I give the signal, use everything you have to close this gate, got it?"
Seeing Ignysyl's strange expression, Ian felt a little embarrassed.
But there was no other choice—he had to hop across these skeletal limbs to get close to the portal.
Besides, this experiment had given him an idea of how to shut the gate before anything crossed over.
'If I can touch them like this, isn't it easy to push those skeletons out of the portal?'
Ian thought and hoped so. Otherwise, he might have to revert back to the previous plan and use the Translucent form to destroy those skeletons, as they were also a kind of spirit form in his opinion.
What do you think?
