Path to Becoming the Greatest Space Mercenary

Chapter 118 Two Avenues of Investigation (3)

"I’m never suggesting I do something like this again."

Having finally exited the air vent, Kasandra quickly stretched out her body after having been in immensely cramped quarters.

Even as flexible as she was, it had been painful and uncomfortable to crawl though something clearly not large enough for someone her size. And had a human attempted the same thing, they probably would have gotten stuck at the entrance.

Still, her plan had been successful. She and Grito were now inside the enemy base without any of the guards being aware of their presence.

"It doesn’t sound like anyone is nearby. Can you take us to the room where you made daily calls to your uncle?" Kasandra asked, looking down at her much smaller companion.

Grtio nodded his head and began retracing the way he had traveled every day since he had been captured. The short time he was able to speak with his uncle during his confinement was the only small bit of solace available to him here. He had long since memorized the route to the communications room.

Along the way, Kasandra had them hide off down a side hall for a bit as a pair of two guards walked by, but other than that, they were able to reach their destination without any issues.

"Looks like there is a single person inside." Kasandra whispered to Grito after carefully putting one of her ears against the door.

"What’ll we do?"

Grito already had some tools out so that he could bypass the door’s electronic lock, but he was far from an expert at situations like this. He was unsure of what the correct move was.

It was possible that the person inside might leave eventually, and they could sneak in then.

However, while Kasandra considered this option, she felt like staying here for any longer than necessary would increase their chances of getting found out.

"On my mark open the door. I’ll take care of the person inside." Kasandra said, pulling her laser pistol out of its holster.

Eyes wide, Grito realized what she was planning to do and hesitated for a moment. He certainly could not call himself an upstanding citizen of the Dramid Alliance since he had helped the Odium Syndicate smuggle drugs since he was young, but never had he been directly involved in killing someone. If he opened this door like she wanted, he knew that Kasandra was going to eliminate the person on the other side.

As Grito hesitated to do as she ordered, Kasandra looked down at him and noticed the terror in his eyes.

For a moment, she flashed back to her own past, remembering the worst day of her life.

"Fine. I won’t kill them. But I still need you to open the door." Kasandra said with a sigh, holstering her weapon.

She then told Grito her new plan and the young Baccigan felt a heavy weight fall off his shoulders now that he was not going to be an accessory to killing someone.

Once everything was set up, Grito opened the door and went completely still.

"Huh?" The guard inside said with visible confusion.

He looked around for anyone and called out when he did not see another person, but there was no response.

Before getting up to check on it, he made sure that none of the other guards had noted anything suspicious in their shared log.

"Must just be a malfunction. Stupid place is pretty old."

The guard got up and ahead over to the door to assess the problem and close it if possible.

Yet the moment he peeked his head outside, Kasandra struck.

With blinding agility, she hooked her right arm around the man’s neck and got behind him.

He was certainly larger than her, but she had caught him by surprise and the bionic enhancements she had received made her a bit stronger.

"No, none of that."

Kasandra noticed the man trying to press a button on the terminal attached to his wrist and used her other arm to hold him back.

For a couple of minutes, the two of them struggled, but in the end, the guard passed out after the blood flow to his brain had been cut off for too long.

After she felt him go completely limp, Kasandra carefully dropped the man to the ground and dragged him back into the room.

"Okay Grito, get to work." Kasandra said, pointing at the monitor in front of them.

It did not take long for the tech savvy Baccigan to gain access to the communications network within the base and pull up the transmission logs.

"They bounced it around quite a bit to make it difficult to track, but it still won’t be enough to stop me."

With all six of his hands moving concurrently, Grito input commands into the computer faster than Kasandra had ever seen before.

"You’re pretty amazing when it comes to your field of expertise." Kasandra said, voicing the surprise and awe she was feeling watching Grtio work.

"We’ve all got things that we’re good at. This is about the only thing I can do though. So, I’m really thankful for your group’s help. I couldn’t be certain that the Alliance Police would actually do anything."

"Yeah, they would have had a difficult time all things considering. Especially with those attacks that just occurred." Kasandra said, nodding her head in agreement.

The Alliance Police had far more rules and regulations to follow than mercenaries did. To gain access to this place, they would have needed to get a warrant and go through all manner of other red tape.

Of course, what Kasandra and Grito were doing right now was not strictly legal, but the people here had far more to lose than them if the police truly got involved than they did. It was highly unlikely that anyone involved in abducting Grito and his uncle were going to call the authorities on them.

"And while agree that everyone has their own specialties, sometimes you’re going to have to do things that are out of you’re comfort zone. There might come a time very soon when you don’t have the luxury of mercy. Just keep that in mind." Kasandra said, looking towards the unconscious guard and speaking from experience.

Grito followed her eyes and gulped when he realized what she meant. He hoped that that day never came.
